  1. My wife is from Spruce Pine which I think is in the NC Charlotte mission.
  2. Here is the full write up of the study for those interested. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/64043641/2012GL051012.pdf
  3. What you say is true, for example Earthgrains, Grandma Sycamore, and Sarah Lee are the same company and in Utah the Sarah Lee bakery by Salt Lake City makes the bread and hot dog buns for Costco, and Great Value, Western Family, and Kroger brands but they use a reduced formula for the store brands. They also produce all the hamburger buns for just about every fast food restaurant besides McDonald's (they have a couple of bakeries dedicated to just them and have the buns frozen and shipped to their stores). Also Great Value brand milk and Target's milk are processed by Meadow Gold, the only thing different between all of them are the labels. Each factory is assigned a code and if you look on the packaging then you can see what products were produced in the same plant. It will be with the expiration date and lot codes. Also, something that isn't too widely known by consumers is that General Mills produces all of the ready made, refrigerated Pillsbury products while Smuckers owns the rights to all the dry goods and frosting products. General Mills also has the international rights to Hagen Daas but not the domestic.
  4. Food Lion, Harveys Supermarket, Bloom, Bottom Dollar Food, and Reid's are all the same company. Checker's and Rally's are the same company and offer the same menu at both places.
  5. I'm not much into manga but I do like the occasional anime though I don't usually watch any unless it is with my wife. We both like Shuffle, Princess Tutu, Azumanga Daioh, Oran High School Host Club, Fruits Basket, Kiki's Delivery Service, Howl's Moving Castle, and Ponyo (though I have to admit that I'm not a huge fan of most of his other stuff.). I also like Escaflowne and Tenchi Muyo.
  6. Seeing as you are the CEO of greenteahp would you be so kind as to tell me what it says on the front of the boxes of your product? I've been trying to find an enlarged photo, but have not been able to do so.
  7. I believe that greenteahp is misusing scientific literature to sell a product. The FDA conducted a very thorough analysis of green tea and CVD/cholesterol to decide whether a Qualified Health Claim could be made. The eventually declined to do so. When they review scientific literature they weight studies based on several factors. For example one of the problems they found with the first study cited on greenteahp's website was that there was no validation of the survey so there is no way to produce a valid scientific conclusion from the data. It is also a problem with the third study cited. The second study on that site is the most valid of the ones listed. It would be classed as an observational study. It does show a correlation but it disagrees with with three intervention studies (studies specifically designed and controlled to test the relationship of green tea and CVD and cholesterol) therefore there is no credible evidence to support the proposed claim that green tea lowers cholesterol or helps prevent CVD. You may read the FDA's entire review of the scientific literature here. There are other letters too. It would be nice if green tea were the miracle/wonder juice that a lot of "health" retailers are making it out to be but, in my opinion, the fact that green tea can't get a single qualified health claim through the FDA with the numerous studies done on it shows that it isn't as great as consumers think it is.
  8. In the interests of turning this into a discussion what is everybody's opinion on using radiation as a form of pasteurization/sterilization? I personally don't have a problem with using it as a part of a company's HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points). One thing I saw a lot when viewing websites of people opposing it was the claim that it is a band aid for poor sanitation or not following the cGMP (current good manufacturing practices). However I don't see it as replacing cGMPs but being integrated into them to insure a safer, longer lasting product.
  9. I had thought of going that route but I couldn't find a site that listed anything specific. For the most part they seemed to go on long rants about how the government and food corporations are just trying to poison us. I already had a list like the CDC's but thank you for taking the time to find it.
  10. Thank you for the help I hadn't thought of looking in pet food but found two, one on some pig ears and one on some chicken jerky.
  11. I was wondering if anybody on here knew of any products that had it. My food microbiology course is offering some extra credit for finding a package with it. I went to a grocery store yesterday but wasn't able to find anything and got blank stares from the employees. I plan on going around to some other stores tomorrow but I'm hoping somebody could help to narrow my search. For those of you that don't know what the radura symbol is, it is an international symbol used to mark foods that have been processed using ionizing radiation.
  12. I have to agree with mimi. She should have a talk with her children and find out what their concerns are and try to resolve them. That may involve divulging some of the things that made her unhappy in her last marriage. However, I don't see that as badmouthing, they should have an open, honest and tactful dialogue.
  13. I personally don't see why you shouldn't allow young men to baby sit strictly because they are young men. When I'm home, I'll watch my (much) younger brother but my parents won't leave him with my sister to watch because she just ignores him and doesn't take care of him at all. Like you said, it can be hard to find a good babysitter and just because somebody is a female doesn't mean that they're capable or willing to take care of children. When those young men grow up they will have an equal responsibility for raising their children and need to learn to take care of them just as much as a future mother.
