I have to agree with your conclusion as I think we are getting closer too...as far as earthquakes this year has been weird with the number of dangerous earthquakes recorded at about a 20 year record yet the TOTAL number of earthquakes recorded in 2011 is dramatically lower compared to the last several years. Most of the devastating earthquakes have been ALL around us in the ring of fire but our lcorner of it has been relatively very quiet...see here http://www.sott.net/image/image/s4/83810/full/ff.gif As far as earthquakes in the last days, there have been some bad ones, but I think we will see an increase in their numbers as well as intensity as we get closer to the millennium...President Eyring said that the Indian Ocean Earthquake/Tsunami was just part of the "beginning" of these things... President Hinckley was talking of calamities in the last days in "If Ye Are Prepared, Ye Shall Not Fear," he said, "How portentous are the words of revelation found in the 88th Section of the Doctrine and Covenants concerning the calamities that should befall after the testimonies of the elders,"... We sing the song: When the earth begins to tremble, Bid our fearful thoughts be still; When thy judgments spread destruction, Keep us safe on Zion's hill. (“Guide Us, O Thou Great Jehovah,” Hymns, no. 83) We can so live that we can call upon the Lord for His protection and guidance... "Salt Lake Valley is a potential earthquake zone. This is the primary reason that we are extensively renovating the Tabernacle on Temple Square. This historic and remarkable building must be made to withstand the shaking of the earth." *** So in the 88th Section of D&C it says... 88 And after your testimony cometh wrath and indignation upon the people. 89 For after your testimony cometh the testimony of earthquakes, that shall cause groanings in the midst of her, and men shall fall upon the ground and shall not be able to stand. Portentous - of prophetic significance, that foreshadows a coming event... *** In science museums I have been on an earthquake replicator where significant earthquakes of the past have been replicated and I've stood through these although for some of them it was difficult. Having them so bad that people can't stand would be pretty intense. Not saying people don't trip if they are moving, but to stand at all...whoa.

Thanks RM...I like reading it from all three translations...Matthew 24 from KJV, D&C, PofGP D&C 45 30 And in that generation shall the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled. 31 And there shall be men standing in that generation, that shall not pass until they shall see an overflowing scourge; for a desolating sickness shall cover the land. 32 But my disciples shall stand in holy places, and shall not be moved; Doctrine and Covenants 45:31* *** JST MATTHEW 34 Verily, I say unto you, this generation, in which these things shall be shown forth, shall not pass away until all I have told you shall be fulfilled. *** Matt. 24:34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. .

I came across this quote today and thought I would share it...I have often pondered what was meant by "hastening his work" and how he will "shorten" the last days "for the elect's sake"... Neal A. Maxwell, "“My Servant Joseph”", Ensign, May 1992. "Each day we decide the degree of our discipleship. Each day we answer the question, “Who’s on the Lord’s side? Who?” Now, my brethren, “these are [your] days” (Hel. 7:9) in the history of the Church. Mark well what kind of days they will be, days when, with special visibility, the Lord will “make bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations.” (D&C 133:3.) God will also “hasten” His work. (D&C 88:73.) He will also “shorten” the last days “for the elect’s sake”; hence, there will be a compression of events. (Matt. 24:22; JS—M 1:20.) Furthermore, “all things shall be in commotion.” (D&C 88:91.) Only those in the process of becoming the men and women of Christ will be able to keep their spiritual balance. Brethren, may we “walk by faith,” and, if necessary, even on our knees! In the name of the Lord of the universe, even Jesus Christ, amen."

If Ye Are Prepared Ye Shall Not Fear (President Hinckley)
lds2 replied to lds2's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
It was interesting that President Monson talked of "fear and doubt" in his message to the Church in the June 2011 Ensign... "Living welfare principles is about putting our faith in Jesus Christ into action—by...establishing family home storage...Our faith leads us to educate our minds and our hands and to work every day of our lives to be self-reliant. Having taken care of our own needs, we are better able to provide for ourselves and serve others. May we follow the counsel not only to do good but strive to be good, not just to do better but to be better. Obedience to the Lord’s counsel brings temporal and spiritual blessings. It allows us to face the challenges of life armed with courage and confidence rather than fear and doubt." -

Did you see where in Brazil a whole train was held up and they stole....nope not chests of gold but containers of corn? It was on the news today. As food gets more expensive compared to our income we may see more people stealing food rather than other "valuables"... A police report says the thieves greased the train tracks, making the wheels of the 54-wagon locomotive skid and slow down before they used a tow truck with a hook to remove the corn-filled containers. Amazing theft: 55 tons of corn stolen from moving train in Brazil | TBO.com

I think of when (in the BOM) the only ones willing to feed the poor and the needy were righteous members of the Church. It seems that most Saint's plan is to be among the "poor and the needy" but "Providing in the Lord's Way" Welfare and Self Reliance Principles | ProvidentLiving.org requires us to be among those who have food to share...and I don't think they are talking about what's in our cupboards.

I'm pretty sure that at times being something of an alarmist is in the prophet and apostle's job description. I have mostly been quoting the prophets and apostles in this thread about what lies ahead... Moses said, "Would God that all the Lord's people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit upon them!" (Numb. 11:29.) So we all need to study these things and decide for ourselves and then seek the Spirit to know what is in our future. While I'm not in any way a prophet...I do love to study their words such as Elder Bednar's repeated counsel over the past few years to "watch with all perseverence" he said, "Spiritual warnings should lead to increasingly vigilant watching. You and I live in “a day of warning” (D&C 63:58). And because we have been and will be warned, we need to be, as the Apostle Paul admonished, “watching...with all perseverance” (Ephesians 6:18 )." (April 2010) A similar message was given by him in an education week address soon after this conference talk. Presentations*–*BYU–Idaho Peter said, "There shall come in the last days scoffers," who would mock those who seek to understand prophecy and seek to "watch" for and prepare for the Second Coming. 2 Peter 3:3-4 3Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers... 4And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. The prophets have told us that it is a commandment from Heavenly Father to "prepare every needful thing"...https://lds.org/family/family-well-being/home-storage?lang=eng so that we can help ourselves and others should adversity or calamity come. Since many of the prophets and apostles are talking of difficult times ahead it would behoove us to obey this commandment. *

Here are some Latter-Day quotes from my studies, hope they help with yours... "The fulness of the Master’s ministry lies in the future. The prophecies of His Second Coming have yet to be fulfilled." Elder Russell M. Nelson, The Peace and Joy of Knowing the Savior Lives December 2011 Ensign "...but I wish to remind you of the warnings of scripture and the teachings of the prophets which we have had constantly before us. I cannot forget the great lesson of Pharaoh’s dream of the fat and lean kine and of the full and withered stalks of corn. I cannot dismiss from my mind the grim warnings of the Lord as set forth in the 24th chapter of Matthew." The Times in Which We Live (2001) President Gordon B. Hinckley "Those of us who read and believe the scriptures are aware of the warnings of prophets concerning catastrophes that...are yet to come to pass. There was the great Flood, when waters covered the earth and when, as Peter says, only “eight souls were saved” (1 Pet. 3:20). "If anyone has any doubt concerning the terrible things that can and will afflict mankind, let him read the 24th chapter of Matthew." … If Ye Are Prepared Ye Shall Not Fear (2005) President Gordon B. Hinckley “When shall these things be . . . and what is the sign of thy coming?” ( JS—M 1:4 ). His lengthy answer provides one of the most detailed revelations on the signs of the times and of the Second Coming. Known as the Olivet Discourse because it was given on the Mount of Olives, the full sermon is given in Matthew 24–25 . Joseph Smith’s inspired corrections of the Olivet Discourse are so significant that they have been included in the Pearl of Great Price (see Joseph Smith—Matthew ). Mark and Luke also recorded portions of the discourse, though not as fully as did Matthew (see Mark 13:1–37 ; Luke 21:5–36 ). The Lord’s citation of the same discourse in Doctrine and Covenants 45 begins in verse 16 with the words “As ye have asked of me.” The Savior interrupts the quotation after verse 33 to make an explanatory comment but continues it in verse 35 with “Be not troubled.” He seems to end the account at the end of verse 59 and begins speaking directly to Joseph Smith in verse 60 . As far as my original and subsequent posts...I don't see anything older than 2009 here. As President Uchtdorf said in so many ways in his GC talk...the temporal and the spiritual are intertwined...we can't keep our covenants and be more like Jesus without obeying His commandments and temporal preparedness is a commandment from Heavenly Father...at least according to the First Presidency. So I think at least my eye is pretty much on the mark... It looks like there will be some difficult days ahead for which we need to prepare both spiritually and temporally.
-
Can you only prepare spiritually and still obtain "God's Plan of Happiness" or the Celestial Kingdom? I think President Uchtdorf answered this question in our last General Conference... President Uchtdorf in his most recent talk in conference (which is featured on the front page and is THE focus of the NEW Provident Living site) said, "Like two sides of a coin, the temporal and spiritual are inseparable...The Giver of all life has proclaimed, “All things unto me are spiritual, and not at any time have I given unto you a law which was temporal.”...Unfortunately, there are those who overlook the temporal because they consider it less important. They treasure the spiritual while minimizing the temporal."..."The one complements the other. The one without the other is a counterfeit of God’s plan of happiness."..."This work of providing in the Lord’s way is not simply another item in the catalog of programs of the Church. It cannot be neglected or set aside. It is central to our doctrine; it is the essence of our religion. We must not turn aside our hearts or our heads from becoming more self-reliant...The temporal is intertwined with the spiritual. God has given us this mortal experience and the temporal challenges that attend it as a laboratory where we can grow into the beings Heavenly Father wants us to become." The First Presidency told us in a "Message" to the Church that it is a COMMANDMENT from Heavenly Father to "Prepare Every Needful Thing." Can we ignore this commandment and still get to the Celestial Kingdom based on only our spiritual preparations... (If you believe the answer is yes, please read the paragraph above again...:)) Trick question...you can't be spiritually prepared without being temporally prepared...as President Uchtdorf said they are "intertwined.' *

Our Gift to Him Difficult days are ahead. Sin is on the increase. Paul foresaw that members of the Church would endure persecution (see 2 Timothy 3:1–13; D&C 112:24–26). Peter counseled, “If any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf” (1 Peter 4:16). As Jesus descended below all things in order to rise above all things, He expects us to follow His example. Yoked with Him, each of us can rise above all of our challenges, no matter how difficult they may be (see Matthew 11:29–30).... And His gift to us will be the peace of knowing that we are prepared to meet Him, whenever that time comes....The fulness of the Master’s ministry lies in the future. The prophecies of His Second Coming have yet to be fulfilled. At Christmas, of course, we focus on His birth. And to this world He will come again....As a special witness of His holy name, I testify that Jesus the Christ is the divine Son of the living God. He will love you, lift you, and manifest Himself unto you if you will love Him and keep His commandments (see John 14:21). Indeed, wise men and women still adore Him. Elder Russell M. Nelson The Peace and Joy of Knowing the Savior Lives December 2011 Ensign

There are many consultants around eager to host parties, etc., but here is their on-line site... Thrive Food Storage; Canned Grains, Vegetables and Fruits Shipping is expensive and you pay it regardless if it is a party or not (at least in my area), but if you can pick your order up yourself in American Fork you can save yourself that expense. Also Costco sells Thrive products (sometimes in store) and on-line... Costco - Your search for "thrive" produced 21 results. .

I have friends that are total fans of these co-ops...so check them out as they deliver to many communities in the intermountain west. Some things would have to be canned or frozen for longer-term storage. https://foodco-op.net/ Azure Standard - Quality Bulk & Natural Foods Bountiful Baskets
-
They sometimes have some good sales (Black Friday) and dented cans...their quality is supposed to be very good and they claim to fill their cans more than most. This is not a "discount" store by any means...perhaps why their retail store is located in Draper? The Ready Store - Emergency Preparedness, Food Storage, MRE's, and Freeze Dried Food! They have a wider selection of foods than most...like pilot crackers, FD Cauliflower, Peanut Flour, etc. .
-
Besides Augason #10 cans they also sell many items in bulk that you won't find elsewhere...Here are a few of my favorite things...la, la, la, la...la, la, la, la... Sam's Club Consistently the low price leader for excellent bulk popcorn! I have bought some of their spices in GALLON containers Bulk Candy Rice/Beans/Sugar/Flour/Salt/Yeast Shortening/Oils etc. Costco Again they have Rice/Beans/Sugar/Salt/Flour/Yeast, etc. which are often cheaper than the LDS Home Storage Centers Many different kinds of bulk oils, but I buy Crisco and olive oil most often as they store longest Large containers of spices

I have a niece (in-law) with young children who lost her husband to cancer a few years ago. She told me (over Thanksgiving Turkey) how much she looks forward to the blessings of the millennium. I too look forward to that time because of the peace and healing it will bring to those with chronic illnesses in my family that I love most. But what was more interesting to me was that we found out that this yearning for a more "heavenly" life has been with us since we were very young and I was wondering how common this is? Most people I know seem to be afraid of the future and want things to stay pretty much the same as they are now. Most women in my corner of the world say that the future is just too scary to think/talk about or prepare for (even though it is a commandment by Heavenly Father to "prepare every needful thing".)
-
I agree, I think the "economic" storm seen started in 2008 too, and three years into it I have to wonder if we have another 4 years. Several years before President Hinckley said that a GA came to our stake and said that they new a "storm" was headed our way but just didn't know what it was...then President Hinckley told of an economic storm. (This was told to the SP at the time who shared it with the members of our stake.) BTW "Preparing Every Needful Thing" is a commandment from Heavenly Father and this is the time of year when we can really help others become a little more "prepared" through our gifts.
-
Remember when buying items in #10 cans...they can be half empty so it is essential that you compare prices as well as quantity. Some of the higher end "emergency preparedness stores" (The Ready Store, Thrive) say they only source in the US and their cans are often fuller.

This company sells containers to the public and I have found them consistently cheaper than the sale prices at most other stores. For instance you can get a 6 gallon "super-pail" for around $5 including the lid. They also carry gamma lids, water containers, honey bottles, PETE bottles (can use oxygen absorbers with these) and many other glass and plastic containers. Industrial Container 1845 South 5200 West Salt Lake City, UT 84104 Hours: Monday Thru Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm If you go there don't miss going to the Mrs Field's Outlet store that is further East...they have cool outlet priced gift boxes and they sell ice cream, cookies and they give tours of their cookie making facilities. .
