Also notice that the pamphlet that I spoke about above that they talked about in conference, then sent out to the Bishops to make sure every family received from the home teachers and then printed in the Ensign..."All is Safely Gathered In" has changed titles and is now called "Prepare Every Needful Thing"... I think they did that because the first title implied that the Church has already safely gathered in everything so you don't have to. The new emphasis ties back in to Heavenly Father's commandment for ALL Latter-Day Saints to "Prepare Every Needful Thing." See the emphasis from the pamphlet here... https://lds.org/family/family-well-being/home-storage?lang=eng New Pamphlet... https://lds.org/bc/content/shared/content/english/pdf/language-materials/04008_eng.pdf?lang=eng

President Monson...Our Generation...October 2011
lds2 replied to lds2's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Davidkat99 has some great videos on Youtube...but this one actually has President Benson saying these words that President Monson quoted...some are at the beginning and others are in the middle...but it is short. -
I agree with what you are saying Traveler about faith...I think...unless you are saying our faith will save us without obedience? I know a lot of people think that paying tithing is famine insurance as well as "fire." But I worry for those that are not following Heavenly Father's commandment (found here...https://lds.org/family/family-well-being/home-storage?lang=eng) to be self-reliant and then expect the miracles based on their faith... Heavenly Father's Son has said that “there is a law, irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundations of this world, upon which all blessings are predicated—And when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated.” (D&C 130:20–21.) What if having followed the First Presidency's message to the Church given to us several years ago here https://lds.org/bc/content/shared/content/english/pdf/language-materials/04008_eng.pdf?lang=eng is the law upon which the future miracles will be predicated?

Yes, having a tent does make good sense for any number of reasons...
-
I guess that is why Sister Beck mentioned them...I'm sure people will need them in the future and I was pondering why that might be...just like she said that our homes should basically be "overflowing" with home storage (food, etc.). I think of filling a suitcase...pressing the clothes down...and then trying to squeeze as much more in as one can...that is how our homes should be with home storage at least that is how she described it.

President Monson's talks were entitled... "Stand in Holy Places" and then he told us to "Dare to Stand Alone" ...in his talks he was telling us that we will need inspiration...that there are challenges ahead for which we will feel inadequate...that we were chosen because of our strength for the "final inning"...and that we must be worthy to have the ministering of angels to make it through. *** President Monson said that the tasks that lie before us will require some of Heavenly Father's strongest children...us..."God has saved for the final inning some of His strongest … children, who will help bear off the kingdom triumphantly.” We have been told (by President Eyring most recently) that when a prophet repeats himself or another prophet it is inspired. President Monson in his Priesthood Session talk quoted President Benson's talk (which President Benson gave in 1979 and repeated in 1987.) "Said President Benson: “In all ages, prophets have looked down through the corridors of time to our day. Billions of the deceased and those yet to be born have their eyes on us. Make no mistake about it—you are a marked generation. … “For nearly six thousand years, God has held you in reserve to make your appearance in the final days before the second coming of the Lord. Some individuals will fall away, but the kingdom of God will remain intact to welcome the return of its Head—even Jesus Christ. “While this generation will be comparable in wickedness to the days of Noah, when the Lord cleansed the earth by flood, there is a major difference this time: [it is that] God has saved for the final inning some of His strongest … children, who will help bear off the kingdom triumphantly.”4 Why do I think that it was so amazing that he was quoting President Benson's talk? because look at the sentence that comes right after "who will bear of the kingdom triumphantly" in President Benson's actual talk... President Benson "In His Steps" March 1979, BYU Devotional "For nearly six thousand years, God has held you in reserve to make your appearance in the final days before the Second Coming of the Lord. Every previous gospel dispensation has drifted into apostasy, but ours will not. True, there will be some individuals who will fall away; but the kingdom of God will remain intact to welcome the return of its head--even Jesus Christ. While our generation will be comparable in wickedness to the days of Noah, when the Lord cleansed the earth by flood, there is a major difference this time. It is that God has saved for the final inning some of his strongest children, who will help bear off the Kingdom triumphantly. And that is where you come in, for you are the generation that must be prepared to meet your God." http://www.byub.org/talks/transcripts/devo/1979/3/devo197934-554.pdf President Benson was talking to people that are now in their 50s...we are the generation that must be prepared to meet our God. Here is the first paragraph when you go to "home storage" on the (brand new) provident living site... “Our Heavenly Father created this beautiful earth, with all its abundance, for our benefit and use. His purpose is to provide for our needs as we walk in faith and obedience. He has lovingly commanded us to ‘prepare every needful thing’ (see D&C 109:8) so that, should adversity come, we may care for ourselves and our neighbors and support bishops as they care for others." If you look to the right you will see three talks emphasized, one of which is by Bishop McMullin where he says,"A cardinal principle of the gospel is to prepare for the day of scarcity. Work, industry, frugality are part of the royal order of life. Remember these words from Paul: “If any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith...As we do our very best, we can be confident that “the barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail.” 18 We shall enjoy greater wisdom, security, peace of mind, and personal well-being. We shall be prepared, and because we are prepared, we “shall not fear.”" https://lds.org/family/family-well-being/home-storage?lang=eng https://lds.org/liahona/2007/05/lay-up-in-store?lang=eng *** To me this says that if we obey Heavenly Father's commandment to "prepare every needful thing" we can expect miracles!!!

I was noticing on the new provident living site that emergency preparedness is emphasized... https://lds.org/family/family-well-being?lang=eng but then there are a lot of quotes about tents and being gathered to places of safety in the Last Days...and I would assume you might need a tent for that too... President Eyring in the Priesthood Session said, "This is the third time I am repeating this scripture...always remember with me when I repeat something it is not boredom but inspiration...because the fact is, if I was told to do this again it must matter." (From my notes of his Priesthood Session Talk) His talk on Safety in Council has been given/printed three times... Henry B, Eyring, “Safety in Counsel” June 2008 First Presidency Message Safety in Counsel - Liahona June 2008 - liahona Henry B, Eyring, “Finding Safety in Counsel” November 2001 Ensign Finding Safety in Counsel - Liahona Nov. 2001 - liahona Henry B, Eyring, “Finding Safety in Counsel” April 1997 General Conference Finding Safety in Counsel - Ensign May 1997 - ensign The very last paragraph of the talk says: "We are blessed to live in a time when the priesthood keys are on the earth. We are blessed to know where to look and how to listen for the voice that will fulfill the promise of the Lord that He will gather us to safety. I pray that we will have humble hearts, that we will listen, that we will pray, and that we will wait for the deliverance of the Lord that is sure to come as we are faithful." *** Harold B. Lee Conference Report, April 1948 Thus, clearly, the Lord has placed the responsibility for directing the work of gathering in the hands of the leaders of the Church to whom he will reveal his will where and when such gatherings would take place in the future. It would be well before the frightening events concerning the fulfillment of all God's promises and predictions are upon us, that the Saints in every land prepare themselves and look forward to the instruction that shall come to them from the First Presidency of this Church as to where they shall be gathered and not be disturbed in their feelings until such instruction is given to them as it is revealed by the Lord to the proper authority. *** by President Ezra Taft Benson, Conference April 1982 Prepare Yourself for the Great Day of the Lord "But to an otherwise gloomy picture there is a bright side—the coming of our Lord in all His glory. His coming will be both glorious and terrible, depending on the spiritual condition of those who remain. One appearance will be to the righteous Saints who have gathered to the New Jerusalem here in America. In this place of refuge they will be safe from the wrath of the Lord which will be poured out without measure on all nations." *** Heber C. Kimball, Journal of Discourses, Vol.9, p.154, June 19, 1862 This people know enough to be righteous, honest, pure, and virtuous; and those who will not practice that which they know to be good will become habituated to folly and vice, just in the same way that men became habituated to using tobacco, to stealing, drinking, and lying. "When the time comes that the Lord says, "Arise and to your tents, O Israel;" then men be pure inside and out; they must be for God, or they will have no part in the blessings conferred upon the righteous." *** James E. Talmage Conference Report, October 1921, p.188 "I have faith in my people, for I knew that they are the Lord's people, and I am proud to be one of them; but when the cry shall come, as come it shall: "To your tents, O Israel," for there are struggles ahead, the Lord knows where to find those who have been faithful." *** Elder H. Aldridge (Second Quorum of the Seventy) LDS Business College Devotional, February 8th, 2005 "We must both learn what these signs are and then identify them correctly when they occur. They can and will strengthen our faith in Christ and His prophets, if we know the scriptures. Just as in the days of Noah, a way is already prepared for the escape of the Lord's elect Latter-Day Saints, if they are in tune with His prophets." *** Book of Mormon Alma 26:5-7 And they shall be gathered into the garners, that they are not wasted. Yea, they shall not be beaten down by the storm at the last day; yea, neither shall they be harrowed up by the whirlwinds; but when the storm cometh they shall be gathered together in their place, that the storm cannot penetrate to them; yea, neither shall they be driven with fierce winds whithersoever the enemy listeth to carry them. But behold, they are in the hands of the Lord of the harvest, and they are his; and he will raise them up at the last day.

I hope we have a lot more time...but everyday there is the bad news coming from the European/Middle East nations and I wonder. Wasn't it Belgium that went belly up and caused the bank runs? Now it is country after country, bank after bank needing bailouts, being downgraded and needing loans it seems that it would be impossible for them all to go on too much longer...I guess we will see.

Nature Neuroscience Year published: (2011) Abstract Unrealistic optimism is a pervasive human trait that influences domains ranging from personal relationships to politics and finance. How people maintain unrealistic optimism, despite frequently encountering information that challenges those biased beliefs, is unknown. We examined this question and found a marked asymmetry in belief updating. Participants updated their beliefs more in response to information that was better than expected than to information that was worse. This selectivity was mediated by a relative failure to code for errors that should reduce optimism. Distinct regions of the prefrontal cortex tracked estimation errors when those called for positive update, both in individuals who scored high and low on trait optimism. However, highly optimistic individuals exhibited reduced tracking of estimation errors that called for negative update in right inferior prefrontal gyrus. These findings indicate that optimism is tied to a selective update failure and diminished neural coding of undesirable information regarding the future... How unrealistic optimism is maintained in the face of reality : Nature Neuroscience : Nature Publishing Group What this says is that people will easily believe and remember good news but will underestimate the possibility of anything bad happening even when given valid reasons to change their thinking and/or prepare.

In her training video she talks about tents and our family storehouse overflowing... Relief Society Training Materials 2011 "Self Reliance" By Sister Julie Beck Relief Society Training Materials "I have a sense and a feeling as we have watched some of these disasters in the world, that this is a time for us to learn and prepare from these experiences. Sister Thompson gave a testimony of that, and the preparation happens in our own homes. There are not enough tents in the world to furnish every person with a tent unless the members of the church have a tent in their own homes... And then the storehouse is pressed down, heaped over and running over in our own homes... If an earthquake or economic disaster happened, would you have enough water to drink...? would you be able to get by until help could come to you? Those are the kind of the things we need to be thinking about in our day and time, the Lord expects us to do our little part and then He can bring on the miracles and then we don't need to fear."... "I bear you my testimony that the gospel of Jesus Christ is True and His principles will strengthen us individually and as a family and as a people, as a Church, as we listen to prophets of God we will be okay. We don't need to worry about being alive in this scary time. The world has had scary times before, and the Lord has always taken care of His people who have been faithful. *** So what are the prophets telling us to do? Well they just completely revamped providentliving.org and told us to learn about "providing in the Lord's way" which means to become self-reliant so that you can help others. We should study the June 2011 Welfare Section and Providentliving to learn how to do that...at least that is what President Uchtdorf said in priesthood session. .
-
I feel strongly that we are being prepared for something ahead...I believe the new Providentliving.org site says so if you really look at what is emphasized. The emphasis going in tells us to read President Uchtdorf's where he tells the Priesthood of the Church to study the June Ensign, Provident Living/handbook references found there. The first emphasis after the link to his talk is "self-reliance". When you go into that area you will find an emphasis on finances, emergency preparedness and employment. If you press on emergency preparedness you will see the need for a 3 month supply of food, water reserves and some money set aside for emergencies. If you press on "Home Storage" you will find the emphasis is on "Preparing Every Needful Thing" and that it is a COMMANDMENT from HEAVENLY FATHER including longer-term home storage. If you look to the right you will see that the pamphlet formerly known as "All Is Safely Gathered In" has been changed to "Prepare Every Needful Thing" so as to reflect Heavenly Father's Commandment/Warning. If you look at the articles emphasized in the right hand column you will find the words of Bishop McMullin with the warnings and blessings of home storage, President Hinckley's words about a financial storm ahead with the need for some reserves, and an additional address warning from the First Presidency to have home storage. So what lies ahead...to me there are clear signs that we will have financial, employment and additional calamity needs as they talk of potential personal and widespread calamities in the future.

My ancestors were kind of in that situation in the Willey handcart company...they were well-to-do and were planning on going in the wagon train, but they were asked to give up the money that would have paid for the team and wagon and take hand carts instead. They had already left their eldest son behind to serve a mission and paid for little Bodil Mortenson's passage on the ship. They arrived in the valley with very little...but they all made it through the starvation and hardships with no deaths in their immediate family...even though the father and an adult daughter were invalids and the other family members had to pull their added weight across the plains. Perhaps they had added blessings for their sacrifice.

I think that the lady may have been talking about the Exodus to the New Jerusalem. You would need substantial stores to make it there if the Saints have to walk back there as I have heard said would happen someday before the second coming. That could happen in some of our lifetimes as President Benson told those who are now in their 50s that they would live to "see their God." Or she may have been talking about having to leave our homes for safety in the future as when things get bad that is what God always has had his Saints do. I have never seen where God killed all the wicked while the righteous stayed safely in their homes, but I have read over 45 times where, when things get bad, he gathers them out to safer places. Some think we may be gathered to the temples or to the mountains if this happens. You can hear this quote that President Monson used part of in his Priesthood Session talk a few weeks ago, it is very powerful and means a lot as when a prophet quotes another prophet you KNOW it is VERY important. Listen to this quote...it is President Benson's words at the beginning and middle of this short video.

I'm still studying what the Lord expects of us as President Uchtdorf told the men of the Church to do in the preisthood session. He said to help the needy is part of their priesthood responsibilties. He said to read the June Ensign and Provident Living to find out what that is. In the June Ensign it says you need to have enough for your own family so you can then help others. Most people probably don't know this, but it looks like the entire provident living site has been changed since conference. We should all read it and really learn what the Lord expects... Welfare and Self Reliance Principles | ProvidentLiving.org I do know that the First Presidency just told us this conference that we must be prepared so that if things get bad we will be able to help the poor and the needy...and for over 70 years the Prophets have told us to have substantial home storage. Sister Beck recently said our homes should be overflowing with food. Some of my friends say they can't afford food storage but they eat out several times a month. Wheat was just on sale for $14 for 50 pounds. The Church says that basic survival grains is 25 pounds of grains and 5 pounds of beans. The grains portion of that would be $7 for the month, with about $5 for beans. Then you have to buy the containers which might cost another $7 if you can it yourself... I have friends that quickly paid for a year supply of food by learning to use these foods in their meals...it takes more work, but they feel like they are eating healthier because they know what is actually in their food. After you store 3 months and a longer-term supply of grains (so more than 3 months) you have to decide for yourself how much the Lord expects you to gather. But for most of us it would be a substantial amount as we are commanded to have food to feed our families, our neighbors and to help the bishop feed the poor and needy if things get bad. In a serious pandemic you would have to stay inside for more than 3 months. See "All is Safely Gathered In" just renamed "Prepare Every Needful Thing" that was put out by the First Presidency a few years ago. In this it said that it was a COMMANDMENT from Heavenly Father to "prepare every needful thing." What that is after the basics is between you and the Lord. https://lds.org/bc/content/shared/content/english/pdf/language-materials/04008_eng.pdf?lang=eng

President Uchtdorf in the Priesthood session said, "It will take all of us working together to successfully apply the principles of welfare and self-reliance." So my question is what's going to happen to the government checks that most people get now...? Then President Eyring said, "We are being prepared for priesthood service that will become more challenging with time." and "it is to form a habit of pushing on through the fatigue and fear that might make you think of quitting...staying power comes from working past the point when others would have taken a rest." Wow, most of us don't even want to think about working that hard. Then President Monson said, "Lest we at any time feel inadequate for the tasks ahead for us" he reminds us that we were reserved for 6,000 years to come forth in this generation because we are among God's strongest children. He tells us that we cannot afford to do anything that would stop the ministering of angels in our behalf.

Since most people know I love helping people prepare so that they can be self-reliant if things get bad, I've heard that it isn't just the SLC tribune, but many Latter Day Saints are saying that President Packer said we have generations before things get bad...so I have to wonder if they went to hear or have listened to the 2011 October Priesthood Session talks of President Uchtdorf and President Eyring...neither one sounded like we have generations before things get difficult...IMHO FWIW These are not real quotes...just my notes...but I believe the part in quotes are fairly accurate. As the printed versions aren't out yet I can't check for accuracy...wish I could...so FWIW. President Uchtdorf It will take all of us, working together to successfully apply the principles of welfare and self-reliance. **Right now it doesn't take "all of us" to take care of ourselves and the poor around us. Something would have to happen that would take away our government security blanket before WE would have to all work together to care for ourselves and the needy...for many if not most of us that would be the end of the world as we've know it in itself... President Eyring... The doctrine are the words of Christ...if we have the Holy Ghost we can know what we should do in the future and will have the courage to do it, "to face whatever difficulty we face in the future. We are being prepared for priesthood service that will become more challenging with time." It is to form a habit of pushing on through fatigue and fear that might make you think of quitting...spiritual staying power comes from working past the point when others would have taken a rest. ***If right now the priesthood is being prepared for priesthood service that will be more challenging with time and require us to work through and past fatigue and fear...that sounds like some challenging times ahead. To me President Packer's words assure me that while things may be very difficult and challenging for a time...if we are faithful and have been obedient to His commandments most of us will live to be able to have children and perhaps see their children have children... Other's have said to keep our eyes on the blessings of Zion when things get difficult...From what President Packer said we should because that is certainly where we, our children or their children are headed.

ROFL Maybe, how many of them babies do they have down there...

I am the person who wrote this long, long, "whatever it is" called "Be Not Afraid" (other titles came from those who posted/printed/e-mailed it)... :)

That would be Char Van Kouwenhoven and the reason why this says "Fall 2011" is because I first started compiling these quotations back in the summer of 2008 and I usually update it and add my new quotes from conference every January as sort of a New Year tradition for my family and friends. There is no other "fall 2011" version... I updated it for you guys and I also started putting my new "quote collection" on-line on this site which is something I haven't done before...in the past I just kept quotes on a word document. But I didn't think y'all would mind. It isn't like I belong to or have posted this on a whole bunch of others sites...I've belonged to three other sites in the past and still post on one regularly. A friend took this compilation and added the beautiful pictures and so a couple of sites asked permission to post/print it in the last few years and I responded back that since I dont really feel like I authored this work they could use it if they wanted to...so there are a few other versions "out there." FWIW I didn't know it was on the site you linked to. There are several members on this site that could vouch for me...but I would hate to ask them to do it as it doesn't seem to be a popular thread or topic. The funny thing is that I have never made as much as a dime for this and it has only been given freely to share with any that might want to read this information... I think if you look at my other posts, you will find my style of writing matches the "compilation" above...I hate to say I wrote it as really it is a bunch of great quotes strung together to make it more readable. It's been a labor of love for my family and friends, and I shared it here because I thought my friends here might like to read it... This is a funny site for being LDS, I've gotten more mean-spirited type posts than thanks for my threads...at least so far. I guess I'm just not funny enough...

Some great quotes from conference for my collection...from my notes not an official source...President Uchtdorf priesthood session... "This very hour, there are many members of the Church who are suffering...they are hungry, stretched financially and struggling with all manner of physical, emotional and spiritual distress...they pray for succor and relief. Brethren, do not think this is someone elses responsibility, it is mine and it is yours. We are ALL enlisted..." "In the Lord's plan there is something everyone can contribute. The lesson we learn generation after generation is that rich and poor are all under the same sacred obligation to help their neighbor." "Since the beginning of time our Heavenly Father has spoken with great clarity on this subject, from the gentle plea..."If thou lovest me thou wllt remember the poor and consecrate of thy properties for their support", to the direct command, "Remember in all things the poor and the needy, the sick and the afflicted, for he that doth not these things, the same is not my disciple," to the very forceful warning, "If any man shall take of the abundance which I have made, and impart not his portion according to the law of my gospel unto the poor and the needy, he shall with the wicked lift up his eyes in hell being in torment."" So it makes me think...we don't usually get "forceful warnings" in General Conference like this and President Uchtdorf, when he read it, really said it in a "forceful warning" kind of way...so we have all taken of Heavenly Father's abundance but have we set anything aside "according to the the law of My gospel unto the poor and the needy" or for even our own families? If your thoughts are...I have savings that I would share with the poor...you might consider that there may be a time where our access to banks may be limited or non-existant, there are articles about currency problems everyday... Heavenly Father has commanded us to "prepare every needful thing" so that we can feed our families, help our neighbors and help the Bishop feed the poor and needy. President Uchtdorf's words and warning really "hit home" to me.
-
To me there seemed to be a message in General Conference of "we are all in this together." I was told President Monson said it, and President Uchtdorf said (from my notes) "In the Lord's plan there is something everyone can contribute. The lesson we learn generation after generation is that rich and poor are all under the same sacred obligation to help their neighbor. It will take all of us, working together to successfully apply the principals of welfare and self-reliance." So we are all in what together? So...what is coming and how can we be as self-reliant as possible to meet those challenges? I think too many people just think, "good, if things get bad I'll just be among the poor and others will take care of me and my family"...but how can we take care of the needy as we are commanded and have covenanted to do, if everyones plan if things get really bad, is to be counted among them? The Church has said that they will do all they can but they can't do it all, that every familly who's capable needs to be prepared to be responsible for themselves, help their neighbors and then the poor and needy. President Uchtdorf said a lot about the Priesthood's responsiiblity to do so...
-
Adding this to my "collection" of quotes here... "To gain courage for what lies ahead, we need to be connected to the gospel of Jesus Christ."..."This is not a time to be naive, unprepared, or unaware."..."We need to have the Spirit and look to the prophets and our priesthood leaders for guidance." Elder Allan F. Packer of the Seventy, Ensign, Aug. 2011, Solidly Anchored in Our Testimonies

The "Mormon Myth" in my area is that food will be "called in" and our ward will "take care of each other" when things get bad...seriously that is what is lovingly said in Sunday School or Sacrament Meeting any time food storage is mentioned. Yet I know that the bishop and others who keep saying that don't have any stored food themselves outside of their cupboards as their wives say the whole topic is "too scary to think about." Only a couple of small families have a bit of longer-term food stored for themselves and there are hundreds of families in our community. How can you share food from an empty cupboard? The ironic thing is that all the other wards in our stake are suburban bedroom community wards, where at every bishops meeting (so far) one of the bishops tells our bishop something like, "When things get bad, we know the good people of *** won't let us starve." Our valley only produces alfalfa and a few cows and horses...terrible desert soil and very little irrigation water. There really is an "urban myth" out there that mormon families have stockpiles of food, food is plentiful in the country, the Church has secret silos or food hidden under the gym floor, my neighbors have stockpiled enough to feed their families and share with me and mine, etc. Was it President Hinckley who said we will "rue the day we thought...?"

I thought about President Packer's quote as some might say that this hasn't happened, but then I read this article and related it to whom he was talking ...it seems prophetic... "The unemployment rate for young Americans has exploded to 52.2 percent -- a post-World War II high, according to the Labor Dept. -- meaning millions of Americans are staring at the likelihood that their lifetime earning potential will be diminished and, combined with the predicted slow economic recovery, their transition into productive members of society could be put on hold for an extended period of time."
