  1. First of all you need to differentiate between a transgender simply dressing as the opposite sex and a full transexual whom is post-op and has undergone the hormone and surgical treatments to change to the opposite sex.

As far as I am aware a transgender may be baptised in the LDS Church but may not hold the Priesthood or be Endowed in the Temple. I think this assumes post-op, ie a full transexual.

It would seem to me that a man whom has been changed physically to a woman must then dress as a woman and vice versa.

In the UK now a new birth certificate can be issued to post-op transexuals whereby the sex can be changed: not sure on the US.

In the UK a person may marry according to their current birth certificate so if a transexual female wants to marry a male then they are allowed to do this and similarly for a transexual male to marry a female.

  2. BTW, I wasn't trying to blow you off. I just wasn't sure if you wanted to know why she made the decision she did, or if you meant it more as a springboard on how people decide such things.

    No problem.

I was taken aback at the way she told the story. She is BIC and is about 35 now, third generation LDS.

I know she keeps herself and her family according to the Gospel and LDS standards, always, without any doubt.

I need to ask her why she wouldn't go to a restaurant simply because it serves alcohol yet she goes to an LDS-owned Cafe (owned by a member of the Bishopric and wife) serving tea and coffee without any qualms.

I don't understand why she makes the distinction between the two.

To be honest I am a little concerned that if she saw me in Starbucks, albeit drinking hot chocolate, that she will think I am not following the WoW.

Yet three other long-term LDS members of 50+ years membership went to the same restaurant that this member refused to go to for a pre-Christmas meal - and took me with them -and nobody raised any objections.

I guess that at the end of the day it comes down to what Beefche said - that we have to know ourselves that we are doing the right thing, regardless of what anyone else thinks.

  3. There has been an issue brought up at Church about the way the choir were dressed for the Christmas Eve Service. I don't really remember what was worn but it was nothing out of the ordinary to cause a stir.

I was talking to another Ward member about the young women in particular, since I had been reading a book about what is and is not acceptable dress in Church. In that book it said that flip-flops shouldn't be worn, nor backless shoes or sandals, aswell as the usual short skirts, etc.

This Ward Member said that when she was on the YW Presidency the girls had more issues than their clothing and she would rather they come to Church wearing inappropriate clothing than not come to Church at all. The girls concerned have all been BIC so brought up in LDS households.

What came next stunned me. One of her family members had held a family party in a local restaurant/bar that serves families all day long. This Member had refused to go because they serve alcohol and kept her LDS husband and children away too.

Yet this same Member has family that own a cafe that serves tea and coffee that she frequents regularly.

I can't understand why she makes a distinction between a restaurant serving alcohol, tea and coffee and a cafe serving tea and coffee, that one is alright and the other isn't, when they are all in the WoW anyway.

I appreciate that it would not be appropriate to go to a bar, even to drink soft drinks.

Don't understand the restaurant issue, though. If a restaurant is considered out of bounds then what about a hotel? That seems silly to me.

    Am confused!

  4. Speaking of guidelines... :) Mission Presidents tell missionaries all the time that they will not meet their eternal companion in the mission field.

So, seriously: 38 years ago my mission president, Paul H. Dunn, told me that I would lose either my girlfriend or my hair while on my mission. He went off chuckling to himself. I really hate being bald, but we have been married for nearly 36 years now.

We have three couples in our Ward where the woman met the man whilst he was a missionary in our Ward!!

  5. Well, after those three weeks of hectic activity I will be ready for a rest!!

Am really looking forward to it. The main problem at the moment is the airfare. They are going up and down by $300 on a daily basis. Just have to catch it when it is down.

I WILL be going regardless of the extra cost. I am going and that's that.

  6. I ask this because at this time in my life I experience hot flashes now and again. I can go from being cold to instantaneously hot where I instantly take off my sweater/hoody and start fanning myself, especially my face. And of course they're random, they happen when they happen. If I could not fan myself I would go crazy and AC comes in handy but it does not provide a breeze which is essential in getting through a hot flash. Due to this new development in my life my feelings toward coldness has changed, I appreciate it more than I ever thought was possible. :) I sympathize when any woman (or man) find themselves in an uncomfortable hot situation.

    M.

Are you contemplating being baptised LDS??

  7. There isn't a distribition center AT the SLC Temple. But the Distrubution Center is in SLC. On 1700 South below Redwood Rd. Its the largest and its rather amazing to see. Some of the churches other production facilities are there too. There is another distribution center downtown at Deseret Book.

    Salt Lake City Center

    1999 West 1700 South

    Salt Lake City, UT 84104

    1-801-240-1330 (local calls)

    1-801-240-3685 (fax)

    Monday-Saturday: 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

Salt Lake Downtown Deseret Book Center (This is across the street from the temple)

    45 West South Temple

    Salt Lake City, UT 84101

    1-801-328-8191 (phone)

    Monday-Saturday: 10:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m

Yes the SLC Temple does rent clothing. You will need to purchase your garments prior to your endowment. Other than that you rent everything else for less than $5. (It was $3.75 for everything when I worked at the Ogden Temple.)

The places to visit are: Dowtown - The Temple Square. Do the whole tour. The Conference Center. The Joseph Smith Building. The RS Office Building. The Lion House (you can eat lunch at the Lion House Pantry. Yummy food.)

This is the Place Heritage Park is a great place to visit. If you go plan to spend several hours there. Its fun!

Brigham Young is buried on 1st Ave just east of the Temple. Its hard to find because of the buildings around it (small park like place) but its walking distance from Temple Square.

Those are the most historical relating to the Church.

You will love the MoTab rehearsal. The Tabernacle is a beautiful building. I remember attending Conference there as a teenager.

    I'm excited for you!

    Best Wishes.

P.S. Do you plan on visiting any other sites while in Utah? The Kennecott Copper Mine is the largest open pit mine in the world. its amazing to see but will require a car to get there. April will be a bit cold to float in the Great Salt Lake, but you can go out to Antelope Island. There is a herd of buffalo out there.

If you have the time you could attend sessions at all the temple in the SLC Valley. Jordon River, Oquirrh Mountain, Draper. The Bountiful temple is only 20 minutes north of downtown SLC.

Thank you very much for all this information!

Am going to try to do as much as possible in SLC and surrounds.

I already have my garments. My chaperone for baptisms, whom will be my escort for my Endowments got them for me at the end of last year. My Endowments will be at the Preston Temple. Will hire my Temple dress for my Endowments here. The Distribution centre doesn't carry the whole stock from the lds store so I fancied buying one in SLC because they will have more choice and I will be able to try them on.

As for the trip. Am spending a week at SLC.

Then flying to Detroit for work.

Then driving to Niagara Falls, going by Kirtland, Palmyra, Hill Cumorah and the Sacred Grove. Have ordered the LDS travel book from Sharon, VT to Kirtland from Deseret book so waiting for that to arrive.

I can't wait. 11 weeks tomorrow until I fly to SLC!!

  8. And? 70 times 70 (and no, that doesn't mean 4900 times). It isn't easy, and repeat offenders aren't excused from needing to change because you need to forgive them, but that they do it over and over again is independent of our need to forgive them that John is pointing out.

You'd want it said of you that you need to engage your brain before speaking?

The issue is two ladies from RS Presidency.

The issue is that they repeatedly - on a daily basis, to their own admission - have to repent for things that they have said that day.

The issue is that they don't think before they speak.

I don't need to 'engage brain before speaking' because I have always done that and nobody has ever had to say that to me or about me.

  9. Am booked to go to SLC for the Spring Conference and I can't wait. :)

I am taking my Endowments in 10 days time.

I am guessing that SLC Temple has a distribution centre? I was thinking of buying my Temple dress there.

I am also guessing that the SLC Temple has a rental facility for the clothing?

Am staying for a full week so that I get to do the historical stuff too.

Mormon Tabernacle Choir rehearsal on the Thursday evening

Deseret Book on the Saturday evening whilst Priesthood session is ongoing.

Anything else I need to know?

  10. There is another side to this coin. What about the admonition to be quick to forgive and not hold grudges for things people say thoughtlessly? At least they admit they are not perfect and state a desire to change, but are we any more perfect if we remember every time we have been offended and hold that against them?

The point is, nobody is perfect and sometimes we want to pluck the mote out of the other person's eye when we can't see the beam in our own.

In my experience, with these two ladies, they say something totally out of order to me. I let it go and forgive them, then they do it all over again!

I was brought up - not lds - to not say things that I wouldn't want said to me, to treat others the way I would want to be treated and that is what I have always done.

  11. A number of times over the last few months the Teacher in RS, usually the RS President has made a comment about having to repent every night when she says her prayers because of words she has spoken through the day.

Someone else, an RS Teacher always agrees with her saying the same thing happens to her. I was at the receiving end of one of her unkind sentences on Sunday, as I have been before. Just giving a reminder about a rota and that it was her family's turn and all I got was a sharp retort.

Perhaps, if they engaged their brain before putting their mouths into operation they might find that they don't need to repent on a nightly basis for the unkind words they have spoken during the day.

Both have been converts for 40+ years, surely they should have learned by now?

  12. How do you know she is 'scarred'???

You said that 'she has had sexual transgressions she has committed and won't even talk about how much she is scarred'

I am a convert to the LDS Church. I had sexual relations prior to being baptised, none of which left me scarred in any way.

I don't really understand your post, to be truthful.

  13. Before I was am investigator I thought that the LDS Church used the BoM and nothing else in the way of Scriptures!

When I first started to investigate the LDS Church the most astonishing thing to me was they didn't!

I did mention it to the Bishop whilst the missionaries were present, for them to take that point on board when recruiting members, since it is a point that could well have put folks off.

On discussing the Church with non-Mormon friends I discovered that they thought the same thing too.

That's maybe why folks think we are more than a little odd?

  14. I increased the pdf to 100% where it is fine to read!

I am missing a few names and it is plain to see with this. Although I have got my lines back to before 1700.

Due back to doing family history next week anyway.

Then, when the chart is completed back the 9 generations I will get it printed up at a local printers on some glossy paper ready to frame.

So pleased with the results, though.
