  1. Whilst it is not absolutely necessary for you to have the Temple Prep Class it is recommended that you take it.

I have had mine and can highly recommend that you do them. It is only 7 weeks and is well worth it.

The Bishop will also have meetings with you, prior to your having your Temple Recommend Interview, which is also to prepare you for the first Endowment session.

Part-way through your Temple Prep classes they will arrange for the meetings with the Bishop and then to have your Recommend Interview. Then your Stake President's interview. Then the Bishop makes the appointment for you to take your Endowments, for which you need a chaperone.

    Hope all goes well

  2. 1. That certain political figures are the AntiChrist.

    2. That one of the prophets lying dead in Jerusalem is going to be named David and will be the prophet of the church at that time.

    3. That the constitution will hang by a thread and the elders of Israel will raise up and save it.

    4. We will all walk back to Missouri to build the temple.

    5. The only ones to die will be the ones found unworthy.

    6. more to come I am sure.

The Temple is already built in Jackson County, Missouri ..................

  3. It doesn't bother me in the slightest

From the UK to the US we have mandatory fingerprinting and eye-scans and have had for about 10 years now. Have not had anything done in the UK, even for our passport.

My take on fingerprints, eye-scanning, etc for security purposed has no impact on folks doing nothing wrong.

If it helps stop crime then I am all for it.

As for shopping details - I get rewards from the supermarket for allowing them to do this so that doesn't bother me either.

Our NI number (US Security Number) is used throughout the UK, we are an NI number not a name any more. I will not be surprised if they start mandatory chipping of humans, the same way we do with dogs and cats.

  4. I am an engineer, working on a PhD. I've often thought if I hadn't been born into the church, I'd probably be agnostic. I understand where you are coming from; I am very logical and extremely anal-retentive. As a missionary, I personally had to understand the gospel from a logical perspective before I could teach it, otherwise it just didn't make too much sense.

If you are looking for a checklist of what it is to be LDS, the best is to stick to the basics. Someone else quoted the baptismal interview questions. Another list is the Articles of Faith:

    The Articles of Faith

But ultimately it is more simple than that.

    1) Do you believe in God the Eternal Father, in Jesus Christ as your Savior and in the Holy Ghost?

    2) Do you believe that Joseph Smith was God's prophet called to establish His Church and that today men are called of God to be Prophets?

    3) Do you believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God like the Bible?

    4) Do you believe the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints is His one and only church on the Earth?

Those four things are really it.

Ultimately all doctrine comes from the scriptures, so if you want to learn doctrine: read the scriptures. This is why the BoM, PoGP, and D&C are so important; they help clarify the doctrine in the Bible.

My opinion on xyz topic, or someone else's internet opinion doesn't matter. To find answers, one has to go to the source the scriptures and ultimately God and be willing to accept whatever answer is given.

    Wholeheartedly agree.

For me it was as simple and as basic as that for me to be baptised.

  5. I have just bought a Kindle wifi - mainly for my Scriptures.

Am trying to find a way of taking the ebooks I got from Deseret and loading them onto my Kindle.

I have a 7" pad running Android, which I have used for the Deseret books in the past but I would really like to put them onto the new Kindle.

Anyone managed to do this please?

  6. You can send some of that Summer over here :)

We have had really windy weather here and deep morning frost too although, thankfully, no snow - yet!

Thought it was three weeks to Christmas when someone pointed out at Church today that it is two weeks to Christmas and three to New Year. Oh well.

I think we are only having Sacrament Meeting here on Christmas Day, with the Carol Service on Christmas Eve.

Not sure about New Year's Day, yet, but will probably be the full three sessions as usual.

Got my Kindle yesterday, so downloaded the Scriptures onto that. It really is a useful little gadget! Really light too.

    Enjoy your Summer!

  7. I was told that in order to be considered 'active' in going to church meetings (for temple recommend purposes) that you only have to attend one meeting a quarter. I don't know if that means an entire 3 hour block, or just sacrament meeting...

Apparently it is the whole three hour block twice a month in order to keep the Temple Recommend.

    I go every week anyway!

Edited to add - the Temple Recommend

Q8. Do you strive to keep the covenants you have made, to attend your sacrament and other meetings, and to keep your life in harmony with the laws and commandments of the gospel? stion is on attending Sacrament

So the answer is the whole block of meetings, not just Sacrament

  8. Got my cards written out today. Had managed to find some Christ-centred CHRISTmas cards which is very difficult these days. Don't know how you fare in the US?

Wrapped presents for my Adult Institute Book of Mormon teachers, a husband and wife team whom are just fab.

Got my close friends presents wrapped and organised (all Church members). After contemplating what I could buy for them that they would truly appreciate, since they are late 50's, 60's and 82 years of age, someone mentioned that the film "Jesus of Nazareth" is never shown on tv here. So, found the DVD on ebay and ordered those. Got them some choccies to go with it too, of course!

Got a pressie for the Bishop and family - four children under 13 - got the new Monopoly World Cities.

Am doing well this year, it has to be said. Planned ahead and got stuff from Deseret and lds.org store.

Then will get Christmas and New Year over then planning for my trip to SLC for the April Conference. Can hardly wait for that. Am hoping that my two missionaries will be there too.

  9. I have to say that when I first started VT I hated it too.

My VT partner and I were given three non-active Members to visit - non-active for some 10 years or more. Two of them smoke very heavily and their homes - and my clothes - smelled after a visit.

I didn't know them since I had only been baptised a couple of months.

My partner only wanted to visit in the evenings, even though we are both free through the day.

So, we had a change around of VT's.. I now have a new partner and four visits to do - two very active, one very active recently-baptised Member and one non-active.

I am so happy with the new arrangement and all is going well.

  10. I started in earnest on my family history in January this year.

By June I was back to 1650 on all lines.

I had never realised how addictive FH is!

Have been filling in the marriages/deaths on the whole tree and in January am going to make a new start on going farther back. Need to go to the County Records and see what they have there.

  11. Yes of course you can!

Just say a prayer and ask for the help that you need to carry out the assignment.

Make sure that you have written your talk down. What are you talking about, by the way?

The Stake asked me to speak at our Stake Conference just 5 months after I was baptised and I was nervous!! My talk was on "The Joy of the Gospel"

However, I did public speaking training so I will give you a tip -

When you stand to speak don't look directly at anyone. Focus on a point just above the head of the seated congregation, on the back wall and then just glance around every now and again. It will stop you from being interrupted in your thoughts whilst you are talking.

I am sure you will be just fine. You will be very aware of the Holy Ghost being present and the comfort that comes with that.

Let us know how you get on.

    Hope all goes well

  12. I've just been informed that the link on my previous post no longer works. So i am posting this update for anyone who may be interested.

It looks like Amazon is no longer selling that version but i did find it here: Mobipocket eBook: "LDS eLibrary for Blackberry, Cybook, ILiad, and other Dedicated Devices - LDS Standard Works, Commentary, Manuals, History, Biography, Reference, Music and More" by Various

It's more expensive than the other version at this site.

    Thanks for posting this.

I have just ordered the new Amazon Kindle, basically for carrying my Scriptures around.

I note that it is also downloadable from that link for Windows PC too - which will be very usefuk, so thank you very much!

  13. Thanks for your help everyone. If this is too much info I'm posting let me know

I've been going to church nearly every Sunday and have met a lot of people at church besides the missionaries. Where I go to church is a branch, not a ward so there isn't a ward mission leader here. The members are extremely nice and lot are returned missionaries, but they're all busy with school/work and I don't feel right asking to meet with them regularly although I'm sure they would do it.

I haven't had much luck with the bishop either. I came in with several specific questions that I wanted to have addressed, but instead he asked me some general questions then basically just lectured me the whole time in a way that wasn't very helpful.

Before this whole thing with the missionaries I felt like baptism wouldn't be that big a deal since I already live and act like a member on most issues (and have my whole life). After discussing it with my dad some more we're both kind of taken back and shocked by how uncaring and pushy the missionaries came across. Today my dad asked me if I'd really want to join a church that values baptism over the health of a close family member and where teaching is dependent on joining first.

One of his concerns (and mine too) is that the church might use being nice and all these activities to get people to do things and say that the church family is more important than your own family. From talking to people in the branch a lot of them don't have good relationships with their family or had all kinds of problems. I don't know if this is just a reflection of society in general or if these are the kind of people who join.

My reason for posting this is not to vent, but figure out if most missionaries follow what Loudmouth_Mormon posted about the 2 questions he'd ask or if the missionaries are taught that whatever happens in the investigators life they need to use it to get him baptized.

    Hello,

You need to remember one very important point -

The Church is a perfect religion with imperfect Members.

If we were 'perfect' we would not need to be here.

There are problems with folks in every Ward and Branch simply because we all have an earthly life to live, along with all its associated problems and difficulties.

I agree with others that the best place for you to do your learning now is at the Church and not via the missionaries. Of course they want you to be baptised!! All Church Members will want for you to be baptised - it is the most wonderful, cleansing, spiritual and amazing experience ever. I want you to be baptised.

I take it that you are doing the full three sessions at Church? All are really important but you must attend the Sunday School which for you will be with the missionaries as they go through the Gospel Principles book. Once I was baptised I was kept in that Class, along with others for nearly 9 months before the Bishop moved us to the adult Sunday School.

To my way of thinking once you have a Testimony that you know the Book of Mormon is true, that Joseph Smith was a Prophet, that Pres Monson is the living Prophet then baptism is the only way forward.

Other than that there is no point in waiting. Remember that you are not expected to know everything about the Gospel of Jesus Christ or the History of the Church, the Teachings of everything at that point in time, that comes throughout your life of learning.

Go for it - it is the best thing I ever did. My only regret is that I didn't do it 30 years ago.

  14. Hi semodex,

Jenamarie recommended that you get a book or two on the topic, may I recommend:

The House of the Lord by Elder James E Talmage and You May Claim the Blessings of The Holy Temple by President Boyd K. Packer. I'm sure others have come out more recently, but these are two classics and are packed with information.

I just saw where Jenamarie also mentioned talking to your bishop, and that's an excellent suggestion. I might also add that if you'd be more comfortable talking to a lady, talk to your Relief Society president -- I've seen that suggested a number of times for various things like this.

As sister_in_faith said, it does get easier, really! :)

I have to say that both of those books are just superb!

  15. Absolutely nothing changes my faith. I know that the Book of Mormon is true and that Joseph Smith was a Prophet. I know that the Church is true.

So, when there are problems thrown in my pathway, people at Church whom are thoughtless and insensitive, difficulties that come to me, it doesn't matter, my faith is strong because I know that the Church is true.

We have a perfect Church made up of imperfect people.

  16. Had a friend on the phone today who told me about a Temple Recommend interview when the Bishop asked " Do you watch Big Brother?"

My friend had responded "yes, sometimes, if it happens to be on"

The Bishop refused to grant the Temple Recommend because "Big Brother is soft porn"

  17. I've been thinking that all day. We don't decide when we're ready, the Lord does. Trust me, I've learned about setting down rules with God... The old I'll do this if God does that. It just doesn't work that way. God has taught me the meaning of patience and humility a few too many times. And I mean a few too many only because I should have learned the first time. :D Thank God he's patient and forgiving.

    That is not true.

If I were getting married in the Temple I would be Endowed to do it. Nobody has been made to wait for Endowment when they wanted that done.
