Britainstan to recognize Muslim polygamy.
the_jason replied to Fiannan's topic in General Discussion
Three possibilities here. Either the barber is misinformed, or the friend is part of a so-called "fundamentalist" Mormon group, or he is less active and it is not known to the church. There's no way this person is an active member, or he'd have been excommunicated by now. President Hinckley said on numerous occasions that anyone who practices polygamy in the church is excommunicated. He didn't give an exception to people of other cultures. -

That's government for ya. "You're breaking the law, but we'll go ahead and reward you anyway." Sounds like what's happening with illegal immigrants in the US. -
It sounds like her life is screwed up regardless. She sure could use the peace of knowing she saved a life, at least.
-
So because her life is hard she has a right to kill a child of God. Nice justification.

Members of the church are not currently asked to live the law of consecration to the fullest. In the temple we make a covenant to be willing to live this law when asked. The purpose of the law of consecration is that members will give of their time, talents, and posessions for the building up of the Kingdom of God, not so that we can all have equal wealth. Capitalism is only concerned with possessions. The law of consecration is a spiritual law, and thus a higher law. Capitalism is a temporal law.

That's what I'm talking about. If you go with her you are condoning her decision. You may not think you are, but you are. It's one thing to say you are against abortion. It's another thing to actually show it by your actions. Actions speak louder than words. I can gaurantee you that if she were my daughter I would not be going to the clinic with her. I love my daughter, but I cannot support or condone wrong decisions.
-
If she wants to do it she'll do it. What are YOU going to do?
-
It all comes down to being selfish and making bad decisions. If she could change the past I'm sure she'd have done something different to avoid this situation. Since she can't, she needs to do what is morally right and what's in the best interest of the child, not selfishly fulfill her own desires. I don't care what anyone says, once conceived that fetus is a living human being, and destroying it is murder. If she doesn't want the baby, give it to someone who does. There are many people who do things the right way but are not able to have children. An abortion takes the opportunity of having children away from parents who are actually responsible.
-
But you're supporting her and going with her. That makes you look like a hypocrite. That's like saying you don't drink but you'll go with a friend to a bar. You have to act the way you believe.
-
Abortion is wrong. Abortion is murder. If you're a true friend you'll tell her how you feel, not just tell her what she wants to hear. It's important to stand up for our beliefs at all times, even in dire circumstances. The fact that your friend confided in you and wants your support is irrelevant. You have a duty to stand up for what's right. Period.

Unless there are the same number of men and women in the Celestial Kingdom, there will have to be some doubling-up somewhere.
-
I don't look at having multiple wives as a status symbol. Obviously, there can only be as many wives in heaven as there have been women on the earth, so not every man will have the same number. A man who has one wife will still be entitled to the same blessings as a man who has 2 wives.

Answering the "free choice" question from a teen.

I agree. Are we now penalizing people for not understanding things? I thought the purpose of the forums was for people to express their opinions and beliefs freely. I didn't know we had to have a perfect knowledge before our opinion could be heard. That reprimand was a bit harsh and unjustified. -
Ah, crap! The world's coming to an end now.

Don't forget King The Jason. -
1. How can everyother religion be wrong and your belief is right? We believe there is truth in every religion. To say a religion is false, in my mind, is distasteful. We do, however, believe that God can only have one gospel. If two churches teach different things then they can't both be true. God doesn't teach one thing to one church and the opposite to another church. There can only be one gospel. With that one gospel, there can only be one authority. The true gospel and the true authority would have to exist in the same church for it to be God's church. We believe this gospel and this authority was restored to Joseph Smith, who in turn re-established the church on the earth, under the guidance of the Father and the Son. 2. What makes your god real and other gods not real? There is only one God. Different people believe different things about who or what God is, but there is only one God. 3. If somebody believes in a different god because its in their culture, do you think they will go to hell or not be "saved"? Again, only one God. We do not believe people outside our church will go to hell. We don't have the authority to judge. All we can do is share what we believe and invite people to find out for themselves if it's true. God will be the ultimate judge. 4. What is the benefit from being religious? Can this be accomplished without religion? Religion, to me, is more than just going to church on Sunday and saying a few hail mary's. To me, it's a way of life. It's a belief system that effects every aspect of my life. To be a true Christian, or a true Latter-day Saint, I have to live what I profess to believe. We can't be Sunday Christians. 5. How do you know, without a doubt that god is real? Im looking for tangable evidence. The scriptures warn us of being sign seekers. I don't have to see God to know that He exists. I know that He lives and that He's the Father of my spirit. The Lord requires us to have faith. This faith, when sought after and applied fully, is greater than any physical knowledge. I KNOW, without a doubt, that God lives and that Jesus is His Son, who died so that I may live again.

It's disrespectful to not use titles when referring to persons of importance. I would never refer to President Hinckley as Gordon or Hinckley or anything other than President Hinckley. Among friends though, I see nothing wrong with it. On my mission we used to omit 'Elder" when referring to a missionary (even though it was frowned upon), and I still do it today with some friends. I think there is a time and a place when you should and should not do it. -
Exactly. God is supreme, but he would never give a commandment that jeopardizes families, nor would he expect us to serve him at the expense of our family. Both should be equally important and should be given equal time.

Dating Nonmembers

That makes sense, but you're right that your experience isn't typical. The people I'm referring to married a non-member in their first, or only, marriage. I'm just curious why. -

I have a question for everyone who's posted about their spouse not being a member. I don't ask this to be critical, but merely out of curiosity. Why did you marry a non-member? Were you not a member yourself when you got married? Were you less active? Did you think you could get him/her to join? I find it interesting how many people in the church wish their spouses were members, and I wonder what choices could have been made differently. Again, I'm not trying to be critical, so please don't take it that way. -

We have agency. We don't have free agency. There was a price paid. It's not free. -
My question is why are posts that haven't been responded to for 3 years still around? Seems like a waste of space to me.

To me, "forget" means to no longer dwell on what happened and no longer think unkind thoughts toward the person. It's quite possible to forgive and forget, yet not trust the person. If someone treats my wife or kids unkindly I'm required to forgive them. I'm not required to continue associating with them.
