1. Think, Take a look at this post for more clarification Do We Honor Jesus And Worship God
2. Hi kjf512, The first questions has been answered for you so I will attempt the other two. 2) I am fairly new to the Church but I have read on numerous occasions that the BoM has several writing styles contained withing the different books. I have noticed this myself while reading it, also the D&C seems to be in a completely different style as well. I have also come across a site that might be of interest to you. While it does not show Joseph Smith's writing style it does explain the writing style in the BoM. http://www.jefflindsay.com/LDSFAQ/wordy.shtml 3) In the Testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith contained within the Book of Mormon it is written “On the evening of the . . . twenty-first of September [1823] . . . I betook myself to prayer and supplication to Almighty God . . . . “While I was thus in the act of calling upon God, I discovered a light appearing in my room, which continued to increase until the room was lighter than at noonday, when immediately a personage appeared at my bedside, standing in the air, for his feet did not touch the floor. " Joseph Smith was born December 23, 1805, so he was 17 years old. Durring these times he was persecuted. I hope this helped :)
3. I feel the same way :) Since I have been in the Church a lot of the teachings have made so much sense that I often find myself awed in the elegance of it.
4. hmmm I would think that Eternity is timeless it lies beyond our physical boundries.. Then again, I think that God is timeless.. It gets confusing though because I haven't an idea, I have read from LDS that God was once a mortal so then it does make me wonder what came before God. I once read an interesting story. It was regarding God basically blowing himself up, this is basically how the Big Bang occurred. It was a pretty good story called God's Debris http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God's_Debris There should be a link to the story on that article.
5. I've thought about this and the only conclusion I can come up with is that "nothing" does not exist :) Even in a void time and space exists, but if both of these qualities were gone then there would be no void. The problem faced with trying to go back before the big bang is, there was no "back". Time did not exist as far as I have read.
6. Last Sunday I was informed that I would be receiving a calling, but it was not revealed to me because I had to leave early. Now I have been wondering for the past couple of days what it could be. I've never had a calling before, and am anxious to find out what it will be. So far I've thought perhaps a home teacher, or perhaps giving a talk. Other than that I can't think of anything else.. I am really hoping it is not to give a talk.. I think I might start talking in tongues if it were to come to that simply because I don't cope well in front of large groups, even small ones are at times to much. What sort of callings do newbies do around the Church?
7. This is one of those topics which leaves me thinking about McCarthyism. If I defend him, I am likely to be instantly thought of as a racist. I feel bad for the guy, he made a stupid remark without thinking about it and now will probably live out the rest of his life being seen as a racist. It is evident that at the time his goal was not to be racist. A public apology and recognition on his part that the comment was hurtful towards the black community should have been enough.
8. I have been at a Buddhist temple but I did not enter it as they were closed. When I first moved to Florida I used to ride my bicycle everywhere, and one road in Kissimmee that I traversed for the orange trees had a beautiful temple there. I would often ride my bike through the property and admire it. I was raised a Catholic several years ago, and in my teenage years I attended a Church but I am not sure which it was.. My teacher (Ms. Steward) in Junior high had a great impact on my faith and explained a lot regarding Christianity to me it was a major blow to me when she said she could no longer discuss religion because the school board had taken a notice to her influence on me. It was a completely unexpected and I felt a little disappointed, but at the time I could not understand why she would place work above religion. A few years later when I was around eighteen I had been waiting for one of my friends to get out of work in Dover. At the time I did not have a vehicle so I walked around downtown and while I did so I met a person who basically pleaded me to attend their Church.. I think it was non denominational. Out of curiosity and good timing I went there.. It was very different from any church I had been to in the past, during the services several people were waving their hands in the air and speaking various things that I could only interpret as gibberish. They later played a movie regarding the rapture, it was from the seventies and very poor quality I remember that it was actually being played from one of those old projectors that so many of us used in school for bus safety :) My wife feels very uncomfortable in my Ward, I am not quite sure how to explain her feelings but when she does attend with me she will often get up from the sacrament and take our baby to another room to change her etc, she will not return until the last fifteen minutes or so. One time after sacrament she felt so uncomfortable that she started to to become somewhat vocal about it and wanted to leave asap. Respecting her wishes we left before the Doctrine Principles. She had wished to show me the religion she had been raised in as a child so we went to a Methodist church. Unfortunately, when we went to the Methodist church they did not have their normal services, the Giddeans were there instead asking for assistance with their services.
9. That is true Blessed, I am sorry that that you had received such treatment. As you and Dr.T have pointed it out I think we all receive it. I know that on the same boards I frequent that several Christian Denominations receive constant assaults. The poor Catholics seem to get it nearly as badly as we do.
10. It at times seems as though I can't help it. It seems as though I need to try to atleast correct the misconceptions. At the same time I completely agree that I should just avoid such people.. These people are one of the reasons I lost faith in God shortly after gaining it. I just could not get past the fact that they are supposed to be representing Jesus and God and they were hateful, and I took my anger and resentment out on God.. It is the reason why I lost faith as a Christian when I was much younger.. It is sad because as a child I had a very strong testimony towards God and lost it, and being that I have gone so long without faith it is hard to build it back up. Now I have this constant tendancy to try to justify everything around me.
11. What is with all of the hate towards Latter-day Saints? Before I converted to LDS I never experienced a tenth of the misconceptions and hateful remarks I do from a few Christians on Yahoo Answers. All of the other religions and atheists seem to leave us alone though. I try my best to try to set some people in the right direction as to where to learn about our Church and dispel a few misconceptions. Does anyone here experience this kind of treatment in real life? It seems like the same worn out arguments over and over. There are a lot of caring Christians out there, such as the ones that post on this board, but man the ones I run into online seem as though they enjoy putting Mormons down.
12. I'm sure in your ward they do, but President Packer said it should not. Maybe you'd like to argue with an Apostle. Nah, I don't think I would. I was just partaking in the conversation.
13. I've been wondering why there were members standing at the doors into the chapel. They will let people leave but not come back in. The sacrament is taken out of the chapel into a hallway with a couch in it so people cans still partake of it though. Lol! I knew something was going on, hopefully next time they will bring me something to eat, still though what about the first Sunday of the month?
14. I am still learning, so again I am going to ask something that is probably blatantly common knowledge to most LDS, do not think the lesser for me asking Now, me being fairly new to the church and lacking a lot of the knowledge most of you have. I am just grasping at this concept.. Heavenly Father is our literal Father, and Jesus is our spiritual brother of which was first to come into form. When you say Jesus is God I am thinking in a term that means a literal deity of which we are to worship in the manner that we worship Heavenly Father, as an equal to Father. Is this correct?
15. I used to play EverQuest a couple of years ago. It is a very addictive game, I could play for 10+ hours a day trying to level my character of which was a Dark Elf Necromancer. It does come with it's own lingo and is a lot of fun but just occupied to much of my time. EverQuest is also known by many as EverCrack because a lot of people actually do become addicted to it if they are not careful. I now play World of Warcraft, a game similiar to Everquest but less time consuming. I'm an fantasy fan, even in my youth before we had higher quality video games my brothers and I would spend hours playing Dungeons & Dragons, Gamma World, Paladium Rifts, and many other paper and pen rpgs.. It was pretty cool that I found out after I was baptized that one of my favorite authors by the name of Tracy Hickman co-authored DragonLance was a devout Latter-day Saint and Dungeons & Dragons player. Yeah... I am a hopeless nerd.
16. I have noticed that when I go for the sacrament there are a lot of people there, but then when I go to the Gospel principles class there are only six to ten of us there including the missionaries. What else happens after the sacrament? I noticed that later during the priesthood that there are probably twenty to thirty of us there.
17. Thank you a-train, it is important to me to know such things because when I talk to friends, or family I feel as though I am a representative of our Church. I have been browsing around the net looking for answers and thus far I have come across three methods of worship.
1.Worship of only Heavenly Father. 2.Worship of both Heavenly Father and Jesus 3.Worship of the God Head.
I should have not used the word polytheism, but for lack of a better word I had to include it. I do agree with you though it is just semantics, but with my wife asking me I feel obligated to give her an answer. I find it difficult to give her satisfactory answers regarding our church because she is an atheist and wants definitive answers, and refuses to see missionaries. It was a concern to me because I did not wish to be breaking a commandment, I prayed to God but was still unsure. Thank you =)
18. Please bare with me, I have been trying to understand this for a little while now. I am still new to the Church and reading from the Book of Mormon, so I have not come to a conclusion yet., From what I thought I understood, we worship only Heavenly Father through Jesus. I then later read that Prophet Hinckley stated that he worships both Heavenly Father and Jesus. So now I am a little confused, while I respect, honor, and love Jesus for the Atonement and pray to our Heavenly Father through Jesus, I have not been worshiping him, nor praying directly to him. I repent through Jesus Christ to Heavenly Father during prayer, I do not repent directly to Jesus Christ in prayer.. Am I doing so incorrectly? If both Jesus and Heavenly Father are both worshiped, does that make us polytheistic? I looked for a question similar to this one, but did not find any answers on this board. Thank you.
19. I just stick with my PC for gaming, as used games are much cheaper for PC than xbox or PS2. I like MMORPGS, currently I am playing WoW. I also enjoy first person shooters as well, but have not had the opportunity to play any of the newer games. Unfortunately, I have not had the chance to play around with the 360 yet.. If they came out with an MMORPG I probably would though =) The only bad newsI have heard regarding the 360 is that a lot of them have overheated.
20. I found the perfect article for you located here: http://www.fairlds.org/Misc/Word_of_Wisdom..._Hypocrisy.html
21. hmm Does this mean I can eat the Coffee ice cream my wife mistakenly bought me a few days ago?
22. I have yellow highlights throughout my Book of Mormon. I don't see it as an act of desecration, I see it an act of my poor memory =). I think of it this way, the physical book is not what is important, what is important is the message contained within. I think my Catholic family is the same way, out of all of the Bibles which had fair use, I never saw any markings at all.
23. Thank you all for taking your time in replying to my question. Just as a-train had described, the quote from Elder Grant's talk was missing a few sentences. It seems as though this poster had modified it in some way that supported his views. I later replied that Elder Grant was not stating that Jesus had multiple wives, it was Celsus which had stated the such. Thank you for the information and the link a-train. the_jason, and Maureen, I would also like to thank you. I am still learning a lot and your reference to Doctrine and Covenants 68 was valuable, also was the explanation of “How do Latter-day Saints define the idea of scripture”.
24. Earlier today, I was trying to explain to someone that the Journal of Discourses is not part of our scriptures when another person stated that it is. They said that as long as a prophet says "In the name of Jesus Christ" at the end it is scripture. I find this hard to believe, but am unsure. This person (mr penguin) was spewing Anti Mormon propaganda over the board for a few hours so I doubt it, but what do you think. Here is a link to the question that was asked. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qi...Dr0VG.VIUhf1zF6 Be careful, some of the questions and answers posed to LDS are downright rude and manipulative on this site. Thanks.
25. Thanks mom, I hope no one tears at it, it has endured to much as is :). I never did receive the new member lessons, I have the original pamphlets and the Gospel Principles though. I will look around to see if I can find them. Thank you for responding
