Unfortunately, as much as we may like to say the Church doesn't reform anything, an overview of the LDS Church since 1830 will reveal plenty of reforms over time.

Does this not worry you at all Cal? Does it not weaken your testimony?

Using "Occum's razor" to make sense of the original BoM text and the "Kirkland" edition, it becomes pretty clear that as JS's theology of the Godhead evolved, the trinitarian view clearly espoused in the BoM was at odds with the "new view" of the Godhead, so the church had to try to make the two theologies mesh--they had to change the BoM in several places, which as been pointed out.

Do you think that those changes were made under the guidance of the Spirit? or just by the writers so that people did not get confused about the Trinity beliefs within the church? I just feel a little suspicious of changes being constantly made to the BoM, it sort of makes it less likely to be an inspired book if it constantly needed altering.

There are no-so-strong mormons always, everywhere. Where can you run?

I presume you mean not-so-strong Mormons...

Well, everywhere you go..especially if you go on a Mission, you are going to find non mormons and not so strong mormons...don't you find it interesting to listen to their questions about your beliefs, and discuss/debate them in a 'friendly' manner.

I feel it is sad that non mormons cannot quote from 'anti' lds sites without being labelled 'bashers', as sometimes the words that these sites use are more eloquent than the ones I use...and they have already done the research into the questions I have asked...

What is current policy regarding posting things from anti sites, such as the articles by Sandra Tanner?

  4. Thank you for your posts Cal...I feel so helpless for this guy...I hope that there is some sort of help available here...not only through the messages that we post, which can actually reach out to Mark on a more personal level and steer him towards to real sort of help that he needs...

I don't know how much personal info. members supply to admin. but it would be useful if someone from admin could take Mark44's case to a more personal level and see if anything can be done for him.

I would recommend PM's or Emails but not if they are going to make him feel worse, as in the posts from amilia which are just reinforcing his delusions re satan...

    Admin..can you help Mark????

  5. Thank you Jenda...I have read a little about the RLDS, as I said...I knew that it went back as far as the death of Joseph Smith...so did the RLDS continue to follow his son, you say? Joseph Smith 111? and did the LDS continue to follow Brigham Young at that time?

Regarding the additions made to the BoM since the death of J.Smith, by the LDS and RLDS..do you think God would really put 2 sets of prophets/apostles etc. in the same part of the world at the same time, teaching virtually the same original doctrine, but disagreeing over later bits, and still regard them both as 'true'?

I must admit that the United Church of Christ part in all this is more confusing to me, because I know less about it...

I just can't see how 2 sets of churchgoers (3 maybe), all originating from the LDS church can be the 'true' church...it seems ridiculous that God would send some revelation to your prophets and apostles and some to others, rather than the same revelation to all...

I know it is easier to speak of the differences of beliefs between your organisations, but perhaps you could just do a quick summary of beliefs of you all...and mark which ones you agree upon. :)

  6. I thought I would look at some of the earliest posts on the site tonight, and found this one...

I wonder whether sissygal has read through all the books/documents recommended, and whether she has any thoughts on it to share with us 12 months later?

For instance, has she become a member of the LDS church and studied more of its history/practises?

I have a question regarding the 'restoration' too...is there any way in which you can proove your theory that the church was restored by Joseph Smith using only Bible quotes, rather than referring to the BoM and D&C, Book of Abraham...etc. which non-lds people would consider biased.

What is wrong with a broad understanding of all that is spinning in this world? I allow my children, who clearly believe in God, to study a teaching which totally does not allow for God in it, why must it be so one sided? Why can it be more open. The very fact that they are scared our children might hear the word God in the public school system speaks volumes about how narrow and closed minded they are. The Christian/God believers are so much more open and tolerant than these freaks of Godlessness.

Amilia...are you saying that the school in question did not have any religious instruction lessons at all for its students? Even in the UK our state schools teach a broad religious curriculum...obviously taking into account the many varied religions of their students, and are neutral in their teachings.

I agree that all students should be able to be taught a wide range of subjects for life, including science, sex education, religion, and maybe how to debate on political issues...without, of course, trying to sway those students into voting for one particular political party over another when the time comes, as well as following the required national curriculum subjects...english, physical education and others...

  8. Now I am TOTALLY confused!

So we have the LDS, the RLDS and the Community of Christ? 3 separate LDS based churches?

Do both the LDS and RLDS consider the BoM a true, historical and inspired history of Jesus' visit to the Americas?

Why does the Community of Christ church not do so....or do they now believe it is, as per the quote:

    'Scripture

The scriptures provide divine guidance and inspired insight for life when responsibly interpreted and faithfully applied. With other Christians, we affirm the Bible as scripture for the church. In our tradition, the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants are additional scriptural witnesses of God’s love and Christ’s ministry.' From Maureen's post?

It seems strange that there could be 3 different strains of LDS church, with conflicting ideas about one of its most important pieces of doctrine, would anybody care to delve into the history of the split in the LDS church where these other parts were formed, and the differences in their beliefs? I have heard a little about the differences of some LDS members (don't know if they belong to CoC or RLDS) in which they still believe that polygamy should be allowed etc. Would be great to have the full history explored, and see why members of each of these churches conflict in their views, and which parts of the original LDS teachings they share a belief in.

  9. I'm sorry that I don't know much about how your health services work for those people who cannot afford to pay for insurance or whatever...but am I correct in thinking that there are some 'state' hospitals which are there to help anybody, rich or poor, as long as they have a valid I.D. card? Surely the doctors there would be able to help you as an urgent case, as you appear to be bordering on committing suicide? Please anybody who knows more about this tell Mark44 how to get the help he needs without coming across financial barriers.

If anyone is a friend of Mark44's (apart from on the net) and knows his family, please consider approaching them with him, in order to help him discuss his thoughts with them.

As far as the church sanctioning this endeavor, it is in no way related to the church. The church cannot even continue to claim that they believe that the BoM is a historical document (the church leaders certainly don't, so they don't encourage the membership to, either), so they have no interest in proving that it is. All the expeditionary work must be done at Neil's expense, which might be another reason why this is not proceeding as fast as some would like.

And just a final note, it was told that the world would eventually prove the BoM, not the church. Maybe the Lord is just revealing this small bit to us to give us hope to hold on to in this time of trials to our faith.

This confuses me...By saying that the church cannot recognise the BoM as a historical document, what can they recognise it as? So much of the LDS faith is based upon what is written in it? Are you saying that it isn't a true documental history of Jesus visiting people in America and that it is just a story?
  11. I feel so sorry for you, that you are living in a country in which you have to pay for medical care, because if you were here in the UK you would be able to seek help from your doctor who would be able to either prescribe you some medication to ease your depressed state, or send you to a psychiatrist who could assess whether or not you were suffering from some sort of psychosis, and treat you accordingly.

I'm not saying this to be cruel to you, or to poke fun...I am very concerned about your state of mind, you must seek help from your physician. Please listen to what I and other posters on here are saying to you...I know you are religious and wish to pray for help, do so if that makes you feel better, seek any guidance from your Bishop and others, but please see your doctor too...

    Proof of your allegations  B)

Why don't you ask Him yourself? Ask and ye shall recieve.

LOL, I have asked...and was not given any answers...so I used my logic and started researching the church instead...finding inconsistencies, which other posters on here in the past have discussed/debated...as I've said elsewhere, there have been/are problems with all religions, as they appear to be 'man made', so their doctrines are altered to suit their own purposes. Instead of following religion/religious leaders, I just try to do my best to be good to people, in whatever way I can...and take care of myself too...hopefully, if there is a 'heaven' this might lead me there :)

Maybe it is a matter of semantics. I try to live my life in accordance with what God asks and requires of me. I get an emotional high from doing that. If God chooses to bless me with a spiritual high that is His perogative, and I would be blessed by that. I don't expect it, but it is nice.

Jenda I think this is the best way to view any sort of religious/spiritual/emotional highs...don't seek to compare the size and splendour of your experiences to those of others, in a hope that you will have had a better experience than they have...just carry on being a good person, and be good to yourself too, and you will be given whatever 'highs' or 'rewards' God and Jesus have promised you... :D
  14. That's great Cal...I read another post earlier about how you maintain your belief in the LDS church...I once attended the church, for 5 years, but left it when I became involved in a relationship which would have got me tangled up in the 'do's' and 'don'ts'. I suppose I was the same sort of believer that you are at the time, I still see some good in all the religions I've read about, but I don't follow any specific one anymore.

Hope your guitar thang goes okay!

  15. Mark44...I feel so sorry for you...to me, you appear to be one of the casualties of the Lds teachings on homosexuality...I am so shocked however, at the anger in your posts against not only other gays, but at liberals/democrats...what makes you think that they made you what you are?

I disagree with Gordon Hinckley and the other prophets teachings re homosexual feelings...feelings just exist, sure you can try to alter your feelings, however the ones I would be trying to alter/eliminate in your case would be those in which you feel you want to be the leader of a Nazi concentration camp in which you would destroy all gays and liberals!!! I'm afraid that statement you made caused me to feel that you might be suffering from some severe mental illness...at the very least confusion caused by the teachings of your church.

You have so much hate in your post...hate for liberals, other gays, gay marriage, lds girls who you say want sex...why can you not accept the way you have been born? Is your faith in the LDS church so strong that you will not question their beliefs on homosexuality?

I feel that you think there is much pressure on you to conform within the church, settle down with a wife and have children. Many homosexual couples successfully bring up children too. I am sorry that you have lied about your situation regarding girlfriends/wives/fiances, this is so sad. It is also sad that you have used drink as an escape, although if you are depressed (which you sound) then alcohol will only enhance these feelings and anger.

Feel free to visit the Church Counsellors as recommended by Snow, however I would suggest that you also consult counsellors that are not attached to your church, where you can feel free to air any difficulties you have about the church and its stance on homosexuality...as you may not (subconsiously) agree with those teachings but just feel that you have to conform. The easiest way to deny that you have homosexual feelings is to say you hate all homosexuals...but you know that you are not telling the truth when you say this.

Please get help immediately and don't think about taking your life. I must add one more thing too...I do not think that being homosexual has anything to do with the bonding between you and your parents at an early age...this is such a negative message to give to those church members who are suffering from the conflict of their church beliefs and their homosexuality...I hope that the comment you made regarding sending them to the spirit prison and the lowest level was not really what you would like to happen to them.
