PinkCow Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 Helloooooo!I'm just wondering if Mormons say the Hail Mary prayer? Are they specific prayers that you DO say and ones that you do not say?Ohhhh how about the Our Father???I hope this question wasn't asked already, but I'm asking it anyways.=) Quote
mnn727 Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 No we do not say fixed prayers with 1 exception and that is the prayers said when blessing the Sacrament of Communion. Quote
Wingnut Posted October 3, 2008 Report Posted October 3, 2008 No we do not say fixed prayers with 1 exception and that is the prayers said when blessing the Sacrament of Communion. That's almost accurate. For one thing, we just refer to it as "the Sacrament."There are some ordinances that have fixed wording, such as baptism, and temple ordinances. In general, however, each prayer is its own. Quote

You're right we LDS do, however someone asking if we say the 'Hail Mary' must be RCC and they don't call it 'the Sacrament' so I was answering in a way she would know what I was talking about.Baptism and Temple content are not prayers. But, you can get "specific" in your prayers. For instance, instead of me saying "Please be with the posters of lds.net" I can say "Please be with PinkCow and let her find the answer to her prayer questions." Quote
NateHowe Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 As for the Hail Mary (Ave Maria, if you are old-school or a musician), the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not recognize Mary or any other Saint as an intercessor between us and the Lord. Jesus Christ atoned for our sins, and we pray to the Father in His name. Thus, we would not have need for a prayer to Mary. That is not to say that we do not acknowledge or honor her role as the physical Mother of Christ; we simply do not agree with the Catholic view of her redemptive role. Quote
abqfriend Posted October 6, 2008 Report Posted October 6, 2008 There are obvious differences between Catholic beliefs about Mary and the LDS Church. We use Sacred Traditions and the Teaching Magesterium of our Church in the formulation of our doctrines and teachings along with Sacred Scripture.-Thus many differences exist.Mary in indeed deeply honored and venerated in the Catholic Church. She is not worshipped, although abuses on this issue have taken place in the past. Catholics pray to Mary as we would talk to a friend. What closer friend to Jesus than his Mother. This is why we call Mary "Mother of God." As a Catholic, I do not have to go through Mary or any Saint of my Church to get to God. I can and do pray to God directly.Catholics believe Mary prays for us on our behalf. She interceeds for us on our behalf. She asks for us on our behalf. We venerate her in the mostly Biblical Hail Mary "prayer" Catholics use the word "prayer" differently than non-Catholics, as Prayer includes for us in talking to Mary and the Saints. We ask them to "pray for us." In the "Hail Mary" Prayer-We ask Mary to--- "Pray for us." -The focus is alwys to God as we understand that term.Mary is subordinate to Jesus and God the Father. Go into any Catholic Church-and the chief symbol you will see is the Cross/Crucifix. You will not see a symbol/picture or statue of Mary directly between the congregation and the Cross.-CarolAs for the Hail Mary (Ave Maria, if you are old-school or a musician), the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not recognize Mary or any other Saint as an intercessor between us and the Lord.
