If I joined the LDS church would I be pressured to quit my job working in a bar? I have no problems not drinking myself. (In fact working in a bar and seeing people drunk is enough to make anyone not want to drink). Buts its what ive done for years and I make a good living doing it.

Thoughts?

Where you work is a personal choice. Some members think its wrong to work in environments like bars even if you don't drink.

I don't feel that way. My younger sister put herself through Nursing school by working in a bar and her bishop supported her in the decision. As long as you aren't giving into temptation then I don't see the problem with it. Sometimes you have to work where you can find work.

What about tobacco growers who have followed for generations in the family business? Would they be denied because of their business? I don't think so. I too believe sometimes we have to do what we have to do (within legal limits of course) to support our families. Unless we are working in a place that is only to support the toys.

I suggest discussing it with the Bishop. I would suggest you consider the concept of "avoiding the appearance of evil" as this does come into play.

On the Mississippi coast, the stake president has asked the members not to work nor visit the casinos. In Nevada, stake presidents have varied guidance to their flocks.

So, check with your bishop, make it something to ponder and pray about, and be willing to do what the Lord asks of you. If you do, God may just have a better job or blessing awaiting you.
