Ban on Pornography

In the very first episode of The West Wing, a religious leader asks President Bartlett, "Children are able to buy pornography from street vendors for five dollars. Don't you think that is too high a price for free speech."

Bartlett looks him square in the eye and says, "No. But I do think five dollars is too high a price for porn."

Well... if you remove all temptation from the world.. how am I to be tested and prove my faithfulness? The idea is to work above it!

We're to rise above the muck, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be doing some house cleaning every now and then. Look at the Church's stance in CA right now. Agency is to be respected, no doubt. But there are limits to what society can or should have to tolerate...

Oh.. I agree.. but one will never ban it here. No more than they could stop the alcohol from flowing. As long as the wicked world wants it.. the wicked world will get it. We will need new Porno prisons built. 1/100 for those that distribute.. and 99/100 for those that use.

Or will this just be a misdemeanor with a fine attached?

I think we need to make sure that we as members are not contributing to the delinquency first. Something about a log in ones eye?

Plus... I would like to see what the punishment is going to be in that country.

Wow that is great. That country imparticular has had so many struggles. I wish we could have more of that here. But IMO because of the revinue it brings in we are fighting a constant uphill battle.

It's not great. It's a potential travesty.

The law, for example, forbids body movements that provoke or imply sexual arousal - that is, potentially, shaking your hips in a dance could land you in prison for 12 years.

The law promotes the public taking a role in enforcing it. That means vigilantism.... how about a bunch of Muslim extremist violently reacting to some sense of morality they don't care for? This from a country that allows convicted mass-murderers (like Amrozi, Mukhlas and Imam Samudra) to incite murder, revenge and jihad... while, now, someone who looks at a girly magazine could go to prison.

... very bad news.

I'll take the advice of the notice requesting I post :)

While I tend to agree with the sympathy, I generally do not agree with the state imposing these sorts of laws. For one, they are nearly unenforceable. If they want to enforce them, as someone else mentioned new jails will be opened up or huge amounts of fines would be collected - most likely from the less educated, poorer demographic.

The proper way to deal with these issues is through education. For instance, in most parts of Canada, smoking is now a very despised activity. Education and public awareness did this - not penalties. One can feel the pressure to put the smoke away. One knows smoking is wrong. It is only those who harden their hearts (brains??) so to speak who chose to smoke. Nothing can be one for these people until they make the choice to stop. Impose laws and people will build underground smoking bunkers. Really.

Teach that pornography is wrong... admittedly it's not an easy thing to do with all the trash we see on TV, magazines etc but it is the only way to truly deal with the problem. Laws for the sake of laws just wont work. Laws with the idea the govt is "sending a message" won't work since a) a bunch of govt officials will get busted and there goes moral authority, or b) those who have loose morals tend to think the govt should not be passing moral judgement (of course that is relative).

My 2 cents

I think the whole country should go against everything that people enjoy except for Nevada. That state should be an "anything goes" place where people could come and enjoy life for a short visit. Unfortunately, the government here has come up with too many restrictions. They are ruining a great place to live. LOL

If only such a law could be passed here. Unfortunately, I don't see that ever happening.

Only totalitarian regimes force such repressive measures on their citizens. All such regimes turn out to be immoral and evil.

Thank goodness we live a land of liberty and peace that doesn't force someone's morality down everybody's throat. It's the reason that God picked America for the Restoration.

did you never learn about what happened with prohibition of alcohol in the US? - like a previous poster stated education is a huge key in anything like this and a 1000 times more effective than banning it which usually just increases the crime rate. Right now in the UK our prisons are so full people who should be sent to jail can't be. At least in Thailand and part of the US you have the death penalty option for people looking at porn, that could keep your prisons ticking over.

I know I was lucky went to a primary (elementary) school where things like sex ed, sensible drinking, drugs and smoking were educated about at an early age. As well as posters up about famous athletes advising against drugs, drink and alcohol, there was a smokers lung kept in the hall where we ate and had to walk through several times a day. I even remember the police officer with drug classes saying you shouldn't be doing this, and if you are caught you will be arrested,, but this is how to lkeep yourself alive. As far as I am aware non of us went mad during our teens.

Well since sex is fun, enjoyable and just about everyone wants to do it in one form or another, trying to legislate morality is going to be next to impossible. Personally I wish there were fewer laws in selected places where one could go to enjoy the pleasures of sin.
