1 Nephi 13

14 And it came to pass that I beheld many multitudes of the Gentiles upon the land of promise; and I beheld the wrath of God, that it was upon the seed of my brethren; and they were scattered before the Gentiles and were smitten.

15 And I beheld the Spirit of the Lord, that it was upon the Gentiles, and they did prosper and obtain the land for their inheritance; and I beheld that they were white, and exceedingly fair and beautiful, like unto my people before they were slain.

Quote for Discussion

…you will shine brightly, fired by the strength of the God who brought you to this Land and for some special purpose gave you dominion over this Land and over the red man. That destiny is a mystery to us, for we do not understand when the buffalo are all slaughtered, the wild horses are tamed, the secret corners of the forest heavy with scent of many men, and the view of the ripe hills blotted by talking wires. Where is the thicket? Gone. Where is the eagle? Gone. The end of living and the beginning of survival.

Alma taught in chapter 32 that people are blessed when they are compelled to be humble. While this is a prophecy of the Lamanites being humbled, we must remember that this is not the entire prophecy. As the Lamanites become righteous, they shall blossom as the rose and become a strong people in God. But it will only happen after they've struggled enough to become humble, tossing away their pride and the false traditions in their lives.

Of course, this same prophecy applies equally to the Gentiles, who when are humble are blessed, and when their iniquities become full, will be scattered and destroyed.

not sure where you want to go with this.......... ????? It is sad the horible way the indians were treated by the government.. white people.....

Chief Seattles statement shows he knows God is allowing this but in his eyes for what purpose... Sounds like he was a very wise man.. but still not sure why you are bringing up the tragedy????

It is the same pattern seen since history began dealing with iniquity and allowing humility to wipe away the sins of unrighteousness. Soon, even our own people of this land will be swept before our enemies, if it was not for the Savior intervention [see 2 Nephi chapter 1]. It seems like every time we are filled with iniquity and turned away from GOD, the land is swept clean.

So you are saying the indians were essentially wiped out because of their iniquity and not because of the greed and racial issues of the government/ white man. Not sure I can agree with that.... Many tribes were lied to and tricked by the good ol government......... please explain I really would like to enderstand this... Hemi and still waiting for an answer fron Pam.

What great native American transitivity occurred since they wiped away the Nephites, People of Jared, perhaps other cutures that were brought to the Americas? How do you feel on black slavery and what they had to go through? Or perhaps the changed Pagan Romans who turned Christian doing Nero time?

Yes! I did read that our nation has done many wrongs but the Savior warned them it will happen latter portion prior to the return of the Book of Mormon that was given Nephi, as he witnessed it.

As the world will turn against the former Saints during Joseph days, it will happen again in the near future. He does allow these prevailing moments in history to humble His people or be swept clean; as in the case of the Nephites in the later 3rd century.

Chief Seattle’s reply to the President’s request for a large area of Indian land in 1854

Let us revisit the passage:

1 Nephi 13:13-19

13. And it came to pass that I beheld the Spirit of God, that it wrought upon other Gentiles; and they went forth out of captivity, upon the many waters.

14. And it came to pass that I beheld many multitudes of the Gentiles upon the land of promise; and I beheld the wrath of God, that it was upon the seed of my brethren; and they were scattered before the Gentiles and were smitten.

15. And I beheld the Spirit of the Lord, that it was upon the Gentiles, and they did prosper and obtain the land for their inheritance; and I beheld that they were white, and exceedingly fair and beautiful, like unto my people before they were slain.

16. And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld that the Gentiles who had gone forth out of captivity did humble themselves before the Lord; and the power of the Lord was with them.

17. And I beheld that their mother Gentiles were gathered together upon the waters, and upon the land also, to battle against them.

18. And I beheld that the power of God was with them, and also that the wrath of God was upon all those that were gathered together against them to battle.

19. And I, Nephi, beheld that the Gentiles that had gone out of captivity were delivered by the power of God out of the hands of all other nations.

13. The Spirit of God... wrought upon other Gentiles The Spirit of God is also the spirit of freedom, Pahoran later taught in the Nephite record (see Alma 61:15). A modern revelation beckoned to the Latter-day Saints:

"Put your trust in that Spirit which leadeth to do good-yea, to do justly, to walk humbly, to judge righteously; and this is my Spirit" (D&C 11:12).

Oppression and coercion and ignorance and suppression of the will are all alien to that spiritual influence which has been given to liberate mankind from sin and selfishness and subservience. One who yields himself to the impressions of heaven will eventually be freed from falsehood as well as the indignities associated with the shackles of servitude.

13. Other Gentiles ... went forth out of captivity

Elder Mark E. Petersen wrote:

"When it is realized how despotic the European kings were at this period [the time associated with the discovery and settlement of America], it is easily understood that the colonists did indeed flee from captivity and oppression. Under such kings as James I of England, there was hardly a semblance of freedom. He was the supreme dictator in government, in economics, in education (what there was of it), and in the state religion. He controlled the detailed lives of his people. France Spain, England, and Portugal were the principal powers involved in the discovery and exploration of America.... All were ruled by despots, and when immigrants finally were allowed to leave the 'mother countries,' they indeed fled from captivity. The history of the Pilgrims and Puritans gives ample evidence of this fact." (The Great Prologue, pp. 32-33).

14. My brethren ... were scattered before the Gentiles

From the time of Columbus's arrival in the New World, the native Americans began to be scattered and smitten by the colonists. The immigrants were frequently rapacious and unhindered in their plundering of the Lamanites and the natural resources of the land of promise. This treatment of the descendants of Lehi was all a part of the prophesied scattering of the Lamanites as a result of their dark and benighted manner of living over many centuries.

15-19. The Book of Mormon leaves little doubt as to the position of the prophets with regard to the founding and destiny of America: that God-who opposes slavery and captivity-"took sides" in the Revolutionary War; that he aided the American colonists in their struggle against Great Britain, the home of the "mother Gentiles"; and that the land of America-the site of sacred occurrences from Eden to the final Adam-ondi-Ahman-has a glorious destiny to perform, an integral part in that plan of the Eternal Father for the blessing of mankind. I have issues myself and Lincoln happened to be one of them until a thoughtful person took the time for me in explaining it from another prospective that I did not realize. It is calming effect in knowing, we can support each other and make it a point in our lives to help each other in becoming a better person.
