LittleWyvern Posted March 25, 2009 Report Posted March 25, 2009 President Barack Obama hasn't just been working hard to right the American automotive ship, he's also been looking to foster better international relations, meeting with PMs and Presidents of many nations. However, on one of those recent meetings he made a humorous technical snafu, that's something most of us can relate to.While the DVD mistake is no big deal, obviously, it serves a humorous reminder at the frustrations caused by industry that insists on using region coding as a means of fighting piracy. Many argue that such restrictions do little to stop actual pirates, and instead merely hinder cultural exchange, by making it harder to play foreign movies and TV programs.ArticleHaha, I can totally relate to this, I'm too used to my DVD player (which currently is VLC on my computer) ignoring the zone restrictions. Fiannan Posted March 25, 2009 Report Posted March 25, 2009 I think you can program pretty much any DVD player to be region free. Quote
WillowTheWhisp Posted March 25, 2009 Report Posted March 25, 2009 Maybe he can play them on his laptop? Quote
a-train Posted March 25, 2009 Report Posted March 25, 2009 Perhaps it would be well if we read the following book:Against Intellectual Monopoly-a-train Quote
L_and_P21 Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 the smart idea of buying a region free player would have been my first idea. Quote
FunkyTown Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 the smart idea of buying a region free player would have been my first idea. Many DVDs are programmed specifically to not work on region free (Or region 0) DVD players, so this would most likely not work. Quote
L_and_P21 Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 never heard that. interesting. but most interestingly we are talking about the american government. you would think they would have something of such high technology as to make it possible. ooooo, could he have made a "legal" back up of the movie then give it to the PM for "safe keeping"? obviously burning the disk in the proper region code. Fiannan Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 For all we know Brown downloads the movies he wants to see. Quote
captmoroniRM Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 All the PM needs to do is download VLC on his PC or Laptop and he can watch them, if he has a dvd-rom installed. Quote
