bytor2112 Posted June 6, 2009 Author Report Posted June 6, 2009 (edited) This was what inspired the invitation to smooch my backside. Right now, unemployment benefits are keeping my family afloat. None of your slurs apply to us, yet we are to blame for your (and my!) tax burden? I'm not opposed to people taking the current financial meltdown as a wakeup call. I'm not opposed to personal responsibility. I'm just opposed to generalized insults. I also don't think this "crisis" is caused by big-spending babymamas without diplomas. Slurs??? What slurs? My comments suggested that if we didn't have these programs, more people would try to live within their means, etc. You are reaching for something that is not there........Did you read this comment: No disagreement here. Safety nets are great. I personally wish that the programs we have were more effective and actually helped to lift people out rather than just keeping them afloat....barely. That's where effective government (another thread perhaps) could play a role....not bigger out of control Barack Obama , George Bush government. Edited June 6, 2009 by bytor2112 Quote
mightynancy Posted June 6, 2009 Report Posted June 6, 2009 From the article: "Benefits, such as Social Security, food stamps, unemployment insurance and health care, accounted for 16.2% of personal income in the first quarter of 2009, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reports." (bolding mine)My bad. I took your rant to be directed at the programs listed in the article you linked. Now that we get unemployment benefits, I'm considering a divorce, pregnancy, and giving my diploma back. And I'm sure the desire to draw one's Social Security benefit has everything to do with excess babies and loose purse strings. Quote

Moksha Posted June 7, 2009 Report Posted June 7, 2009 The welfare I have a problem with is the kind in which NOTHING is required of the recipient. No accountability and zero incentive to do for themselves. Yes, why do the elderly have to be so old and the disabled so disabled. Where are their bootstaps? "Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?"- E. Scrooge, Christmas Eve, London Quote
Guest Posted June 8, 2009 Report Posted June 8, 2009 Yes, why do the elderly have to be so old and the disabled so disabled. Where are their bootstaps? "Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?"- E. Scrooge, Christmas Eve, LondonAnd why does my druggie brother-in-law who supposedly broke his back bad enough that he cannot work but can ride his bike all week long on a cross-country tour have to be so useless?Hey, the elderly had all their lives to prepare for their getting old. And, my boss is a QUADRIPLEGIC who makes over a 100,000 a year and drives his own van.Do I believe they need help? Of course. And like I said before - there are TONS of private charities for these people. The LDS Church is just one of them. And, if I could've chosen which charities I would contribute to, I can make sure that I only contribute to those ones that are TRULY helping! The government's job is to make laws. Like making it illegal to decline a job offer to a deserving radio DeeJay who happens to have no useful legs. It should not be their job to distribute welfare.C'mon people. THINK. The government is not the answer to EVERYTHING IN LIFE! For what the government giveth, the government taketh away - remember, it is the only institution with the LEGAL authority to put a gun to your head! Quote
