While talking to him, give him not only directives but also an understanding of what is required. This will help him think and helps with motivation.

Talk to him often about college. It was always a given in my life that it goes elementary, junior high, high school, college and then whatever. It was just known.

Teach him that there are many things he can learn from older men (the things that worked and the things that didn't for the person from whom he is learning).

Support and guide him in experiencing things. Sometimes it's scary to try something new and with your support and assistance with his decisions, he will grow in making smart choices and feel like he has a safety net when needed.

No matter what your job is, make your real job the thing that starts when your front wheels hit the driveway. (I don't know if I wrote that one as a rec in this thread before)

Young boys lose things that can easily be replaced. When he gets old enough teach him that if he loses something then he'll have to do without unless he can buy another. This will teach him to care for his things.
