Can you only have faith in the Father and the Savior? Can you not have faith, for example, that something will happen? Because if it's not right for you, H.F. will not give it to you. So is the only thing you can have faith in - Him? That he knows what's right for you?

I've been trying to figure faith out for awhile and can't seem to understand.

You can have faith in anything. Many have faith in money or power. Some have faith in their abilities. Only Faith in Jesus Christ will bring us back to the Father and result in eternal benefit.

I guess you CAN have faith is anything, but it's not necessarily sustained. But, for example, if a loved one was very sick, you couldn't just have faith that they would be okay, could you? Because Heavenly Father and the Savior won't necessarily make that happen if it's not the right thing... ???

When I think of faith, the song in the children's song book always comes to mind:

Children’s Songbook, The Gospel, Faith, 96–97

1. Faith is knowing the sun will rise, lighting each new day.

Faith is knowing the Lord will hear my prayers each time I pray.

Faith is like a little seed:

If planted, it will grow.

Faith is a swelling within my heart.

When I do right, I know.

2. Faith is knowing I lived with God before my mortal birth.

Faith is knowing I can return when my life ends on earth.

Faith is trust in God above;

In Christ, who showed the way.

Faith is strengthened; I feel it grow

Whenever I obey.

Also, there are some good scriptures:

Hebrews 11:1

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Alma 32:21

And now as I said concerning faith—faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true.

The Bible dictionary takes these two scriptures and expands on it much better than I could explain, lol. Here is the Bible dictionary explanation:

Faith is to hope for things which are not see, but which are true (Heb 11:1; Alma 32:21) and must be centered in Jesus Christ in order to produce Salvation. To have faith is to have confidence in something or someone. The Lord has revealed himself and his perfect character, possessing in their fullness all the attributes of love, knowledge, justice, mercy, unchangeableness, power, and every other needful thing, so as to enable the mind of man to place confidence in Him without reservation. Faith is kindled by hearing the testimony of those who have faith (Rom 10:14-17). Miracles do not produce faith but strong faith is developed by obedience to the gospel of Jesus Christ; in other words, faith comes by righteousness, although miracles often confirm one's faith.

I know for myself, my faith grows and gets stronger the more often I read the scriptures, the more often I sing hymns and songs in the Children's song book, the more often I go to church, and the more often I serve my fellow men.

Now, concerning faith, you can pray and have faith that God will heal someone who is sick - but you have to understand that God knows everything about us and He has perfect knowledge and understand of things in the eternal scheme, so only He knows if that person can get better or needs to get worse first. Thus, if it's not His will that someone gets better, they probably won't.

Heb. 11:

1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Faith is the substance...

Faith is the evidence...

These are the beginning words to the phrases that teach faith in the scriptures.

Faith is the substance of things hoped for.

Faith is the evidence of thigns not seen.

Many people misunderstand this to mean faith is something you hope for, or something not seen.

But, read this scripture closely.

Faith is the substance... Faith is the evidence...

Faith is something real and tangible. It is something of substance, or there is evidence of faith.

When a farmer is looking over his empty field before he works, he hopes for crops, or his crops are not seen. If all he did was hope, regardless of the nutrients in the soil or the rain that comes, he will not have crops. So, he works to bring about his crops. He tills, sows, nurtures, and then he reaps. The evidence or substance of his hope for a crop is what he did to help bring it about.

James says you cannot have faith without works. This is what he meant.

I believe that faith is the engine that drives our actions. What we do is the result of where and what it is, that is our faith. If we think to have faith in G-d and what we do is contrary to G-d then we lie (perhaps even to ourselves) about our faith in G-d.

Yes, the farm analogy is just that, an analogy. I didn't mean to imply that one can exercise faith in Christ by planting a crop... although if it is God's will it is exactly that.

The hope we have is in eternal life. What we do to help bring that about is faith. Do all we can and then put what is beyond us in God's hands.

In my opinion,

you can hope for many things.... but you should have faith in only things that sustain you and further edify you and life you closer to eternity. (without a long drawn out answer :))

We can exercise faith in our hopes.... but we must always have humility as God's will trumps our own. I think sometimes I feel God whisper to me about what I should put my faith in. And I think faith sustains us no matter what the outcome. I think faith is such a combination of hope and trust and courage and sometimes trial and error. I think having the scriptures really woven into our hearts and minds helps because it helps to frame proper contexts for faith.

Adding to other comments, it is through faith and doing GOD's will that leads us to knowledge over time.
