tubaloth Posted August 29, 2009 Report Posted August 29, 2009 With this being about the temple I'll try to be careful. (as I hope the answers are too) One of the things that happens in the temple is people can request prayers for others. Now as far as I know this prayer request is for those that are sick. Thats the main purpose! As I was looking at the place where you put names down it says something like sick or afflected. My question is, can you put names down for others that really aren't sock or afflected. Here are two cases. 1. A lady I baptized many years ago in KY. I actually taught her the gospel over the internet. She slow fell alway, and kind of stop keeping in touch with each other. I felt a couple of times to just put her name on the temple prayer? Not sure if thats proper, mostly because wouldn't everybody put there less active friend on the prayer roll? 2. My brother has been out of a job for over a year now. He ran out of unemployment in July. Lucky enough he has a rich friend that bought his house so no house payment for now. But he keeps having interviews but not call backs. I thought having faith in the temple prayer roll would help him out. In both cases I would probably do it once. If I did it more then that I would space it out over time. I realize others need the temple prayer roll too. Not sure where the line is drawn on the temple prayer request. Thanks Quote
HEthePrimate Posted August 29, 2009 Report Posted August 29, 2009 Tubaloth, It is perfectly appropriate to put both of them on the temple prayer roll. Sicknesses and afflictions are not only physical in nature--many are spiritual, emotional, etc. From experience, I know that unemployment, for example, truly is an affliction! I'm sure your brother would appreciate the prayers. :) HEP Quote
john doe Posted August 29, 2009 Report Posted August 29, 2009 It would not be inappropriate to call those names in every couple weeks. They don't knock names off the list if they get too many requests, I believe they only stay on for a week or so. Quote
applepansy Posted August 29, 2009 Report Posted August 29, 2009 Names are kept on temple prayer rolls for two weeks. I use the prayer roll frequently. Somebody in my family or ward needs a special blessing so as I become aware of the problems or issues I put their name on the roll when I work at the temple. You can also call any temple and ask to put names on the prayer roll. They prefer you only put two names at a time, but if they aren't busy and you need to add more you can ask. Its also appropriate to put "John and Jane Jones and Family" if a family needs the blessings. The prior explanations of "sick and afflicted" are very good. I have felt the power of the prayer roll. I've seen it in my live, the lives of my children and others. applepansy Quote
SueMazza Posted August 29, 2009 Report Posted August 29, 2009 I put names on the prayer roll as the Spirit guides me. One time, as I passed the prayer request box in the temple, I felt moved to request a prayer for my marriage because we were going through a particularly difficult time. After the session, as I sat in the celestial room, I felt enlightened about many things in my marriage and I felt empowered to change them. I did not feel that I did anything inappropriate by writing "The marriage of SueMazza and Mr. SueMazza" on that slip of paper, and I actually feel I was blessed because of it. I am learning very slowly, but also very surely, that if you listen to the Spirit, He will guide you to do what is appropriate. Quote
TheAngelPalmoni Posted September 1, 2009 Report Posted September 1, 2009 Drawing on the Powers of Heaven, there is an increased mental effort on your part and on the part of those focused on praying for whatever it is. Very powerful stuff, Faith and Prayer.www.angelpalmoni.com Quote

Thanks It is a personal thing with me - believing that ever person has their freedom and agency. I would ask (when possible) if a person would like their name placed on a prayer roll at the temple for the reason I belived it should be placed there. I believe a person should be vested and accepting in whatever is being done in their behalf. The Traveler Quote
annamaureen Posted September 2, 2009 Report Posted September 2, 2009 I put names on the prayer roll as the Spirit guides me.Same here. Recently, I passed the request box on my way out of the temple, and suddenly had the thought that I should write down the name of my very troubled, inactive ex. Quote
tubaloth Posted September 3, 2009 Author Report Posted September 3, 2009 Thanks for the answers. Do we know of any I guess "offical" word on this? Not sure if its in the Bishop's handbook or not? The more I thought about it, probably mostly my brother, I thought maybe the first step is probably fasting and praying sense this is fast sunday coming up. I guess I thought maybe I should do my part first, before I guess rely on the temple? (I know that sounds bad, but that is kind of how I feel). Quote
