Gwen Posted October 14, 2009 Report Posted October 14, 2009 of the face book groups? do they really accomplish anything? they seem pointless to me, like putting your name on those email petitions. see here for info on those snopes.com: Internet Petitionsfor example i get invitations on face book for groups like "stop the use of life dogs for shark bait" or "keep pedophiles off the internet".... so i join this group and then what? is something actually done? or is it the same psychology as described above?by the way i've not joined any groups cause i can't figure out what the point is.... lol Quote
pam Posted October 14, 2009 Report Posted October 14, 2009 I'm with you Gwen...I recently got asked to join the fans of some shutter company. Huh??? I've never even heard of that company so why would I want to respond and become a friend or a fan? I could see how some might benefit. I joined my high school FB group and it's helped me get in touch with people I haven't heard from in years. So it's been a great help. Quote
Gwen Posted October 15, 2009 Author Report Posted October 15, 2009 the becoming a fan makes more since to me, all you are doing is saying "i like...." the school groups i can understand as well, but that is just networking with something in common... those are always good. but the "stop the use of live dogs for shark bait".... what are they really going to do? the practice isn't even here in the usa so what is my complaining going to do? hordak Posted October 15, 2009 Report Posted October 15, 2009 Yeah the groups for the most part can be pretty pointless. But the quizzes are dead on how else would i know I'm house MD, a werewolf, a rottweiler, a 1965 fast back, and all those other important things you don't learn about yourself anywhere else. Quote
dazed-and-confused Posted October 15, 2009 Report Posted October 15, 2009 its about FEELING you're being recognised, perhaps....and why not make a buck, too.....so, advertising.....think they sell their list to businesses? Quote
bytebear Posted October 15, 2009 Report Posted October 15, 2009 They make Facebook and Google lots of money. Quote
rameumptom Posted October 15, 2009 Report Posted October 15, 2009 FB can be addictive, just like anything else on computers. I get invited to join all kinds of causes, etc. But I just ignore or reject virtually all of them. Why? Because that isn't why I'm on Facebook. Facebook allows me to keep in touch with many people, including old high school friends, etc. It is often how I find out what's going on in friends' lives, or to see how a home teaching family is doing. Me too. I just found 3 more friends this morning on FB that I haven't seen in years. All through the daughter of one of the people I went to high school with. Quote
annamaureen Posted October 15, 2009 Report Posted October 15, 2009 Personally, I can't stand those "WE'RE GETTIN HITCHED!!!" Facebook groups. Quote
sixpacktr Posted October 15, 2009 Report Posted October 15, 2009 I have only joined a couple, and it seems (SEEMS) to me that it is for a 'blast' message, where the moderator can send out a message to everyone about that topic you've joined (like 'Daddy drinks because you cry a lot'). at least that is what I think it does. Otherwise, it is just a waste of time, like most of the things on FB... Quote
Mahone Posted October 15, 2009 Report Posted October 15, 2009 Personally, I can't stand those "WE'RE GETTIN HITCHED!!!" Facebook groups."Lost my phone, need numbers!" etc.I don't tend to join any serious groups on FB, ones that are supposedly there in order to try and get something to change. I do tend to join the more humorous ones like "The Very Hungry Caterpillar is Bulimic" and "Anatidaephobia - The fear, that some time, somewhere, some how, a duck is watching you".You can also find out a considerable amount about a person by what groups they have joined.Admittedly I only ever check facebook while travelling due to bordem. I have no real purpose for it. Quote
