Most have had a week to ponder the words of the prophets. I would ask the other LDS of this forum - having heard the most recent words of the prophets how has it effected your personal commitments (covenants)?

I didn't feel any different. I guess I am already very committed. I do love the gospel and I see the hand of the Lord in my life so fully that conference only confirms what I already receive on a personal revelation level..

I would add here that after being told to arise and stand forth in MY place.... I realized that everyone of us here have a place and a mission and we should be actively engaged in fulfilling those missions. These 'places' are totally individual and personal... they may include church callings, but are not limited to them...

In general it is my impression that global events will bring more of what we have seen in New Orleans and Asia. It is my understanding that being out of debt and having a surplus as recommended in time past are now more critical. It is also my understanding that family values will be challenged more than in the past - both within and without the LDS society. Not so different from what has been said in the past only now it seems to be said in a different manner - sort of the concept that we have been warned and have seen cause for such warning and we will see more cause - as though the times have become critical and we need to pay more attention. But since no one else seemed to notice - I must be mistaken

In seeing so many major devastation in just the last 14 months... and adding to these natural disasters... the war in Iraq going worse and worse.. I think we do have something to be warned about....

Traveler,

Maybe people are tired of hearing about it and talking about it. They have to hear it at church all the time, and probably don't want to worry about it during their leisure time. I'm sure you'll all probably tell me I'm wrong, but that's my opinion.

Even for people who think the end is near, alright already... they're ready. They believe they should have their food storage and their stash of cash, and not be in debt, and they're ready!

All Christians, including LDS, have been saying "the end is a'comin!" for as long as I can remember. As a small child, I was always wondering if today would be 'the day'. And it's ALWAYS been said in this manner of, "as though the times have become critical and we need to pay more attention."

And I bet that my three year old son's (eventual) child will wonder the same thing, and probably even his great great great grandchild.

Yes, we will see more hurricanes in the coming years, because it's cyclical. In the 1900's, there were many more storms than usual, then it calmed down for a while. Then it was bad again in the 50's and 60's. This current pattern began in 1995, and will probably be really bad for a decade or two, then will settle down again.

Every generation has horrible things that happen to them. My grandmother had the depression to deal with, for example. And just because we are in a war doesn't mean the end is coming soon. There have been plenty of wars in the past, and I'm sure those people were saying the same thing.

Lets don't forget about all of the benefits to living in the 2000's:

My mom could not get up in the middle of the night as a new parent when her child started coughing like a seal, type a few words on a keyboard and find out that it's a common disease, and no need to worry.

I often think that if I were in high school now, I could have learned so much more, with all the information from the internet at my fingertips, and without having to find a ride to the library to get sources for a research paper.

Most women who are diagnosed with breast cancer are diagnosed so early that all that is required is a quick outpatient surgery, take out the affected area, and that's the end of it. Women used to die a lot more often from this because it wasn't caught on time.

And that's just one type of cancer. Think of kidney dialysis and all the people who died in the past with problems that could have been kept at bay with this.

I think it's great that I can vote and own property.

It's a wonderful thing that no one can own slaves.

I could go on and on.....

Hi, just to say that I really liked this conference , it was filled with much more "tolerance" and "forgiving" focus... Anyways , i committed myself to some of the things I learned there, and although many complain because Authorities always "repeat" the messages, Abinadi told the court of Noah that as they had forgotten the spirit of the Law, it was necessary for him to repeat it, and so he decleared the whole law again to them, and though it seemed unnecessary because those corrupted priests knew the Law, it was, because they did'nt live up to it...

Take care... :dontknow:

This is a little OT but, chances are your mom found out about croup from her mom. My first child was born in 1988 and I found out about croup from my mom. It took me awhile to recognize that distinct cough and if caught at the start and if you're lucky enough to live in a cold environment, it is easy to control with cold air. For some reason (my pediatrician didn't even really know) but the cold air helps alleviate the inflamation of the larnyx.

I found out via the internet. One night, when he was a baby, it most the most awful noise... I was sure something was horribly wrong! I was about to rush him to the E.R., but did a search and found all this stuff about a cough that sounds like a seal.

There are many bits of info that is passed down from generation to generation. But IMO, a lot of this info that was passed down was incorrect. For example, my mom still would swear to you that going out in the cold with your hair wet will make you catch a cold. But it is so easy via the internet to research these things and find out that is a total myth.

Same with the myth about a cat being able to '###### the breath' out of an infant. The only threat that a cat poses to a baby is the unlikely scenario of it choosing to lie down on the baby's face. That doesn't seem very comfy to me though, and my cat is ALL ABOUT comfort! My mom used to drive me crazy with that one!

And lets not forget about my mom driving me insane because she once saw me lift up over my head to get something out of the high cabinet while I was pregnant... she just knew I was going to make the umbilical cord choke the baby!

All of this sounds like my mom is a nutcase, but this really is the kind of info that got passed down.

Granted, I am well aware of the fact that a lot of the stuff on the net is bogus, and you must know where to look to find the facts.

I know the truth about this one. It is really trolls that try to steal the breath from babies and it is the cat that really protects the baby from the troll and gets blamed for it later - poor cats. ;)

That was from a movie I watched years ago and I can't remember the name of it.

Yes, the old wives tales. I would suspect the one about going out into the cold with wet hair wouldn't be too far fetched just for the fact that being cold might compromise someone's immune system which would make them more susceptible to colds.

Editing to add that the movie I saw years ago is called Cat's Eye, here's a comment from a viewer from IMDB:

4 out of 4 people found the following comment useful :-

A Gem of the Black Humor, 4 January 2005

Author: Claudio Carvalho from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

A stray cat witnesses weird and suspenseful events in three different cities.

In New York, Richard Morris (James Wood) is convinced by a friend to look for the support of the Quitter's Inc. to stop smoking. The unconventional and efficient procedure followed by the company terrifies Richard.

In Atlantic City, a powerful professional gambler, Cressner (Kenneth McMillan), makes a mortal bet with the tennis teacher and lover of his wife, Johnny Norris (Robert Hays).

In Wilmington, NC, a troll, living inside the wall of the bedroom, threatens the ten years old girl Amanda (Drew Barrymore).

These three tales are gems of the black humor, combining elements of suspense, comedy and horror. The first tale is very funny, with the situation where James Wood gets through without previous warning. The second tale is pure suspense, having some funny moments, and is certainly the darker story. And the last one shows a very sweet ten years old Drew Barrymore. The movement of camera in some moments recalls "Evil Dead". "Cat's Eye" is a great entertainment. My vote is eight.

Title (Brazil): "Olhos de Gato" ("Cat's Eyes")
