pushka Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 A personal favourite of mine, from Bob Dylan: Forever Young. Forever Young May God bless and keep you always, May your wishes all come true, May you always do for others And let others do for you. May you build a ladder to the stars And climb on every rung, May you stay forever young, Forever young, forever young, May you stay forever young. May you grow up to be righteous, May you grow up to be true, May you always know the truth And see the lights surrounding you. May you always be courageous, Stand upright and be strong, May you stay forever young, Forever young, forever young, May you stay forever young. May your hands always be busy, May your feet always be swift, May you have a strong foundation When the winds of changes shift. May your heart always be joyful, May your song always be sung, May you stay forever young, Forever young, forever young, May you stay forever young. Quote

Outshined Posted December 5, 2005 Report Posted December 5, 2005 I heard this song for the first time recently at my daughter's ROTC Veterans Day program. I thought it was rather powerful.ArlingtonI never thought that this is where I'd settle down.I thought I'd die an old man back in my hometown. They gave me this plot of land,Me and some other men, for a job well done. There's a big White House sits on a hill just up the road. The man inside, he cried the day they brought me home. They folded up a flag and told my Mom and Dad:"We're proud of your son."And I'm proud to be on this peaceful piece of property.I'm on sacred ground and I'm in the best of company.I'm thankful for those thankful for the things I've done.I can rest in peace;I'm one of the chosen ones:I made it to Arlington. I remember Daddy brought me here when I was eight. We searched all day to find out where my grand-dad lay.And when we finally found that cross, He said: "Son, this is what it cost to keep us free."Now here I am, a thousand stones away from him.He recognized me on the first day I came in.And it gave me a chill when he clicked his heels,And saluted me.And I'm proud to be on this peaceful piece of property.I'm on sacred ground and I'm in the best of company.I'm thankful for those thankful for the things I've done.I can rest in peace;I'm one of the chosen ones:I made it to Arlington. And everytime I hear twenty-one guns,I know they brought another hero home to us.And I'm proud to be on this peaceful piece of property.I'm on sacred ground and I'm in the best of company. We're thankful for those thankful for the things we've done.We can rest in peace;'Cause we are the chosen ones:We made it to Arlington. Yeah, dust to dust,Don't cry for us:We made it to Arlington. You can hear it Here Quote

CharlieDesRosiers Posted December 5, 2005 Report Posted December 5, 2005 I'm fixing a hole where the rain gets in And stops my mind from wandering Where it will go I'm filling the cracks that ran through the door And kept my mind from wandering Where it will go And it really doesn't matter if I'm wrong I'm right Where I belong I'm right Where I belong. See the people standing there who disagree and never win And wonder why they don't get in my door I'm painting my room in a colorful way And when my mind is wandering There I will go. And it really doesn't matter if I'm wrong I'm right Where I belong I'm right Where I belong. Silly people run around they worry me And never ask me why they don't get past my door. The words have been incorprated into every daily worship service. An amulet with these words has been found from the time of the First Temple. And they are used by parents to bless their children. This song is widely assumed (i.e. I read it on the Internet once) to have been written for Dylan's son Jakob. It was Jacob who dreamed of the ladder whose top reached the heavens. Dylan the family man seems to be consistently Jewish, which makes one suspect that the question of Sara Dylan's spirituality and religion is of crucial importance to this whole saga. Bob, after all "seemed to function as a sort of visitor in his kids' lives" as one rabbi who officiated at a Dylan bar mitzvah put it."I must say that I always viewed this song as a particularly personal one for Dylan, but must also admit that I hadn't heard before tonight that Rod Stewart had written his version for his daughter...I really thought he had just written a clumsy version of the Dylan song! Outshined Posted December 6, 2005 Report Posted December 6, 2005 I've always thought Steve Taylor has a way with a lyric... The Finish Line Once upon an average morn An average boy was born for the second time Prone upon the altar there He whispered up the prayer he'd kept hid inside The vision came He saw the odds A hundred little gods on a gilded wheel "These will vie to take your place, but Father, by your grace I wil never kneel" And I saw you, upright and proud And I saw you wave to the crowd And I saw you laughing out loud at the Philistines And I saw you brush away rocks And I saw you pull up your socks And I saw you out of the blocks For the finish line Darkness falls The devil stirs And as your vision blurs you start stumbling The heart is weak The will is gone And every strong conviction comes tumbling down Malice rains The acid guile is sucking at your shoes while the mud is fresh It floods the trail It bleeds you dry As every little god buys its pound of flesh And I saw you licking your wounds And I saw you weave your cocoons And I saw you changing your tunes for the party line And I saw you welsh on old debts I saw you and your comrades bum cigarettes And you hemmed and you hawed And you hedged all your bets Waiting for a sign Let's wash our hands as we throw little fits Let's all wash our hands as we curse hypocrites We're locked in the washroom turning old tricks Deaf And joyless And full of it The vision came He saw the odds A hundred little gods on a gilded wheel "These have tried to take your place, but Father, by your grace I will never kneel I will never kneel..." Off in the distance Bloodied but wise As you squint with the light of the truth in your eyes And I saw you Both hands were raised And I saw your lips move in praise And I saw you steady your gaze For the finish line Every idol like dust A word scattered them all And I rose to my feet when you scaled the last wall And I gasped When I saw you fall- in His arms At the finish line Quote

BenRaines Posted December 7, 2005 Report Posted December 7, 2005 The House by the Side of the Road THERE are hermit souls that live withdrawn In the place of their self-content; There are souls like stars, that dwell apart, In a fellowless firmament; There are pioneer souls that blaze the paths Where highways never ran- But let me live by the side of the road And be a friend to man. Let me live in a house by the side of the road Where the race of men go by- The men who are good and the men who are bad, As good and as bad as I. I would not sit in the scorner's seat Nor hurl the cynic's ban- Let me live in a house by the side of the road And be a friend to man. I see from my house by the side of the road By the side of the highway of life, The men who press with the ardor of hope, The men who are faint with the strife, But I turn not away from their smiles and tears, Both parts of an infinite plan- Let me live in a house by the side of the road And be a friend to man. I know there are brook-gladdened meadows ahead, And mountains of wearisome height; That the road passes on through the long afternoon And stretches away to the night. And still I rejoice when the travelers rejoice And weep with the strangers that moan, Nor live in my house by the side of the road Like a man who dwells alone. Let me live in my house by the side of the road, Where the race of men go by- They are good, they are bad, they are weak, they are strong, Wise, foolish - so am I. Then why should I sit in the scorner's seat, Or hurl the cynic's ban? Let me live in my house by the side of the road And be a friend to man. Sam Walter Foss Quote
eleigh1977 Posted December 7, 2005 Report Posted December 7, 2005 I adore Robert Frost. I could easily post all of his works...but I just re read this poem not too long ago.________________________________________________________________Robert Frost (1874–1963). A Boy’s Will. 1915. 22. The Trial by Existence EVEN the bravest that are slain Shall not dissemble their surprise On waking to find valor reign, Even as on earth, in paradise; And where they sought without the sword 5 Wide fields of asphodel fore’er, To find that the utmost reward Of daring should be still to dare. The light of heaven falls whole and white And is not shattered into dyes, 10 The light for ever is morning light; The hills are verdured pasture-wise; The angel hosts with freshness go, And seek with laughter what to brave;— And binding all is the hushed snow 15 Of the far-distant breaking wave. And from a cliff-top is proclaimed The gathering of the souls for birth, The trial by existence named, The obscuration upon earth. 20 And the slant spirits trooping by In streams and cross- and counter-streams Can but give ear to that sweet cry For its suggestion of what dreams! And the more loitering are turned 25 To view once more the sacrifice Of those who for some good discerned Will gladly give up paradise. And a white shimmering concourse rolls Toward the throne to witness there 30 The speeding of devoted souls Which God makes his especial care. And none are taken but who will, Having first heard the life read out That opens earthward, good and ill, 35 Beyond the shadow of a doubt; And very beautifully God limns, And tenderly, life’s little dream, But naught extenuates or dims, Setting the thing that is supreme. 40 Nor is there wanting in the press Some spirit to stand simply forth, Heroic in its nakedness, Against the uttermost of earth. The tale of earth’s unhonored things 45 Sounds nobler there than ’neath the sun; And the mind whirls and the heart sings, And a shout greets the daring one. But always God speaks at the end: ’One thought in agony of strife 50 The bravest would have by for friend, The memory that he chose the life; But the pure fate to which you go Admits no memory of choice, Or the woe were not earthly woe 55 To which you give the assenting voice.’ And so the choice must be again, But the last choice is still the same; And the awe passes wonder then, And a hush falls for all acclaim. 60 And God has taken a flower of gold And broken it, and used therefrom The mystic link to bind and hold Spirit to matter till death come. ‘Tis of the essence of life here, 65 Though we choose greatly, still to lack The lasting memory at all clear, That life has for us on the wrack Nothing but what we somehow chose; Thus are we wholly stripped of pride 70 In the pain that has but one close, Bearing it crushed and mystified. Lindy Posted December 9, 2005 Report Posted December 9, 2005 Love that song JL...thanks for posting it! Here's something I found online: The Trouble Tree I hired a plumber to help me restore an old farmhouse, and after he had just finished a rough first day on the job, a flat tire made him lose an hour of work & his electric drill quit, his ancient one ton truck refused to start. As I drove him home, he sat in stony silence. On arriving he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands. Upon opening the door he had undergone an amazing transformation. His tanned face was wreathed in smiles and he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss. Afterward he walked me to the car. We passed the tree and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do at the little tree. "Oh, that's my trouble tree," he replied. "I know I can't help having troubles on the job, but one thing's for sure, those troubles don't belong in the house with my wife and the children. So I just hang them up on the tree every night when I come home and ask God to take care of them. Then in the morning I pick them up again." Funny thing is," he smiled, "when I come out in the morning to pick them up, there aren't nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before". Quote
Lindy Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 I wanted to post "What is Truth" by Johnny Cash and a song from Merle Haggard ...but settled on one I remember from a long time ago when I was a kid. It was powerful enough that I could remember all the words ... SIGNS And the sign said, "Long-haired freaky people Need not apply." So I tucked my hair up under my hat And I went in to ask him why. He said, "You look like a fine upstandin' young man. I think you'll do." So I took off my hat and said, "Imagine that. Ha, me workin' for you." Whoa, sign, sign. Everywhere a sign. Blockin' out the scen'ry. Breakin' my mind. Do this. Don't do that. Can't you read the sign? And the sign said, "Anybody caught trespassin' Will be shot on sight." So I jumped on the fence and I yelled at the house, "Hey! What gives you the right To put up a fence to keep me out, But to keep Mother Nature in? If God was here, he'd tell you to your face, 'Man, you're some kind of sinner.'" Sign, sign. Everywhere a sign. Blockin' out the scenery. Breakin' my mind. Do this. Don't do that. Can't you read the sign? Now, hey you, Mister, can't you read? You got to have a shirt and tie to get a seat. You can't even watch. No, you can't eat .. You ain't supposed to be here. The sign said, "You've got to have a membership card To get inside." Uh. And the sign said, "Everybody welcome. Come in. Kneel down and pray." And when the passed around the plate at the end of it all, I didn't have a penny to pay So I got me a pen and a paper And I made up my own little sign. I said, "Thank you, Lord, for thinkin' 'bout me. I'm alive and doin' fine." Whoo! Sign, sign. Everywhere a sign. Blockin' out the scenery. Breakin' my mind. Do this. Don't do that. Can't you read the sign? Sign, sign. Everywhere a sign. Sign, sign ---------------------- Signs dictating to us....telling us what to do, where to go and how to feel I think we need to make our own little signs....... Ohhhhh, I had some real GOOD ones.... ones that would have made a bumper sticker proud! Quote
Lindy Posted December 17, 2005 Report Posted December 17, 2005 Talking to my son about lies and what people expect to get out of them, we talked aobut people lying to get what they want... or get out of something they don't want, lying to make themselves more important..... and my all time favorite...lying to cover a lie....cause they can't remember what the lie was in the first place Anyway....found this song that just says it all! LIES Some lie about who they love Some lie about the truth Some lie to save their lives Some lie about their youth Some lie about age and beauty The conquest of sex Most lie about the night before A woman lies for a party dress I've lied for a stolen moment I've lied for one more clue I've lied about most everything But I never lied to you And we lie, lie, lie on a streetcar named desire Oh we lie, lie, lie for that sweet bird of youth I could be great like Tennessee Williams If I could only hear something that sounds like the truth Some lie in the face of death Some lie about their fame Some kneel and lie to God Some lie about their name Some lie in words and speeches With every living breath The young lie with their guitars The old lie for a little respect I've lied to lie with danger I've lied for a drug or two I've lied about most everything But I never lied to you I've lied for a stolen moment I've lied for one more clue I've lied about most everything But I never lied to you. Lyrics by Bernie Taupin Edited..... to help it make more sense.... our conversation started off about lying to yourself about religion...and lying to others ....but can't lie to God. It was almost like a prayer when I read this song...how trival things are lied about .....but how we can never lie to God...cause that is the ONE person who can catch you. It is funny how many times we tell the kids...don't lie..it will only make it worse...but they have to figure it out on their own, because they don't believe you.. LOL It was nice hearing him tell me how he learned the hard way.... But hey! at least he learned :) Quote

Justlooking Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 True Colors Lyrics by Cindy Lauper You with the sad eyes Don't be discouraged Oh I realize It's hard to take courage In a world full of people You can lose sight of it all And the darkness inside you Can make you feel so small But I see your true colors Shining through I see your true colors And that's why I love you So don't be afraid to let them show Your true colors True colors are beautiful, Like a rainbow Show me a smile then, Don't be unhappy, can't remember When I last saw you laughing If this world makes you crazy And you've taken all you can bear You call me up Because you know I'll be there And I'll see your true colors Shining through I see your true colors And that's why I love you So don't be afraid to let them show Your true colors True colors are beautiful, Like a rainbow Quote
StrawberryFields Posted December 20, 2005 Report Posted December 20, 2005 "Reason, Season, or Lifetime" People always come into your life for a reason, a season and a lifetime. When you figure out which it is, you know exactly what to do. When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed outwardly or inwardly. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, or to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally, or even spiritually. They may seem like a godsend too you and they are. They are there for a reason, you need them to be. Then, without any wrong doing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they die, Sometimes they just walk away. Sometimes they act up or out and force you to take a stand. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled; their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and it is now time to move on. When people come into your life for a SEASON, it is because your turn has come to share, grow, or learn. They may bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it! It is real! But, only for a season. And like Spring turns to Summer and Summer to Fall, the season eventually ends. LIFETIME RELATIONSHIPS teach you a lifetime of lessons; those things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person/people (anyway), and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas in your life. It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant. Thank you for being part of my life.... Brian A. "Drew" Chalker Learn from these people, they are placed there on purpose. If you lose contact and what you had fades away still count the blessing of having them appear when you needed them. Hugs, SF Quote
