Winnie G Posted December 23, 2005 Report Posted December 23, 2005 This has to be the big steaming load of donkey do I have ever heard! Yesterday a CD arrived in the mail; a relative of mine scanned a load of black and white photos from my youth. Two photos of my father before I was born. One in his army uniform I have never seen, I have his naval one from WW2 but not one just before he was called up for duty again. He died during the Vietnam War. The other photo is a corporate photo from his work Detroit Edison in 1957. I used there Kodak print your own developer, my husband paid for them and the clerk asked if she could cut them for me. So OK then it started! “You cant have these there covered under copy right law”. SHE TOOK THEM! I explained that the photo was from 1957 and I don’t think they could ever dream back then copy right laws. I started to cry and that really peeved my husband off, He went to get his money back and had to stand in line for half hour to get his money back. Then they wanted to give him a gift card for the amount “it would be faster” they said. I told them they had better prove this law covered photos back in 1957. So I just got off the phone with the manger. He explained that in-less the photo is more then 50 years old or the person in the photo has been dead for 100 years. ????????????????????????????????? I like to see them take this photo 100 years ago. This was part of a gift to my children’s since they never meet their grandfather I was going to frame them and give them a photo of their grandfather. Therefore, I am going to a do it at another do it your self place and Wal-Mart can stuff-it! Quote
Outshined Posted December 23, 2005 Report Posted December 23, 2005 Never heard of such; I'd go somewhere else too. The heck with 'em! Quote
john doe Posted December 23, 2005 Report Posted December 23, 2005 Whoa, let me get this straight. You actually dealt with a conscientious Walmart employee? This just sounds too odd to be true. I mean....... Walmart? I have never dealt with a Walmart employee who even bothers to give a person the time of day, let alone pay attention to what they are looking at. I'm going to put this down to an urban legend if you can't prove that this person actually did what you claim. Quote
lisajo Posted December 23, 2005 Report Posted December 23, 2005 Winnie check all your food stores, alot of them have kodak machines and you can make them you're self, i avoided this and got a printer that takes photo cards, and a good scanner, i can even do negatives with out having them done, and put pic's on a disk, maybe you should look into it, i think i only paid a few hundered bucks for them all together, sorry you had so much trouble! Fiannan Posted December 23, 2005 Report Posted December 23, 2005 If you really want to get mad at Wal Mart go to PBS Frontline specials and you can view online the special they did on Wal Mart. Quote
Heather Posted December 24, 2005 Report Posted December 24, 2005 or better yet, get a photo printer and your own photo paper and make thousands of copies for everyone! Quote

Negatives or digital images of a copyrighted image will be retuned to you unprinted and you will be provided instructions on how to present Walmart.com with a signed Copyright Release. In addition, Walmart.com will not assist in the copying of any state or federal document, including but not limited to, driver's licenses, passports, and social security cards. They are required to change their policy just to accomodate whiny Canadians.I explained that the photo was from 1957 and I don’t think they could ever dream back then copy right laws. If you tried to explain copyright law to me, I'd ignore you to. Copyright type protection dates to the days of ancient Greece. The U.S. Congress passed The Copyright Act of 1790 in - surprize - 1790. Guest sugarbay Posted December 24, 2005 Report Posted December 24, 2005 Good ol'Wally World. I have a photograph of Graham Greene that I wanted to have enlarged and sepia toned. The water buffalo at the desk asked to see it and since I had heard a similar horror story from a member of our stake I told her, "No way, you will be picking your nose one-handed for the rest of your life." She looked like she was gong to cry and told me to use the Kodak Machine for my printing and coloring needs. Cool. ALWAYS when dealing with WalMart, I don't care if you need to have a dogfood bag loaded into your cart, ask to see the decision-maker. I never have problems there anymore because I go directly to the manager. He has told me that they are understaffed. Wah, freakin', wah. Shouldn't have built this superstore that has taken on a Steven King-ish type quality and then underpay the employees. You are the manager it is your problem. I have my favortie assiociates that will go to any dept. for me for which I am grateful. If we need to copy photos do as Heather said, copier and photo paper. "Trust not in the arm of flesh" or Walmart. I mean, c'mon, they sell a talking deer head mount. Wht's up with that? B) Quote

Winnie G Posted December 25, 2005 Author Report Posted December 25, 2005 First Snow: accommodate whiny Canadians. I am not a Canadian I am an American who lives in Canada. I went to a big grocery store and talked to the manger of their photo lab. He said it was a load of horse hockey what they said and I was more then welcome to print my fathers Photos, he helped me pick out frames and even cut and mounted them for me. All awhile talking to me about my father. When I went to pay he took the slip from the printer and ripped it in half and said Mrs. Green have a wonderful Christmas. He made me cry. My fathers 5/7 are wrapped under the tree for my children and a large Portrait is hanging on the wall in the living room along side of my Grandmothers above the two is embroidered and framed Families are Forever. Marry Christmas every one Quote

stellati Posted December 25, 2005 Report Posted December 25, 2005 Don't quote me on this but, I used to work in a copy shop and we weren't allowed to print copyrighted pictures unless they were 20 years old or older. 50 years is pushing it. I mean, what if the company who shot those photos went out of business 30 years ago? What would you do? Who would you go to to a copy right release? I totally support copyright laws (I am a amateur photographer) but, there have got to be exceptions. Quote

Setheus Posted December 25, 2005 Report Posted December 25, 2005 I bet Wal-Mart got its pants sued off once upon a time for a copy right violation and so now they chose to err on the side of caution. Do you blame them? Quote
Snow Posted December 25, 2005 Report Posted December 25, 2005 This is what bugs me. Business make decisions about the type of goods and services they will sell. Then arrogant shoppers with chips on their shoulders come in and get all pissed off that the business offers the type of service the business chooses instead of the type of service the indignant malcontent wishes they offered so instead of saying, like the rest of us would say, 'Oh, okay - thanks anyway then, I'll go find a business that sells what I want to buy,' they try and tear down the business to others. News Flash - the world doesn't revolve around you. Quote

Winnie G Posted December 26, 2005 Author Report Posted December 26, 2005 So tell us Snow how would you have handled it? We can all benefit from your years of Experience. After all you have walked in my shoes and felt the pain of a little girl who lost a father and had little to remember him by. It all worked out and lead to a touching Christmas eve. After the grandchildren went to bed and sleeping I told them about the gift of love from their grandfather as they opened their photos. I told them that he would have loved them very much. We talked about families and that grate gift of the atonement. We read allowed from the Christmas Carol and watched the CD that came this month from the Ensign. I also read a clipping from the newspaper that day. You see the Friday before my husband drove to Winnipeg to drop off one of our cars so our son flying in had a car to drive down here on Boxing Day. The hwy was not in the best of shape and wile driving there, in front of him a car crossed over the line on black ice spinning and crashed in to a semi truck, the truck flipped on to the top of the car crushing it. He came home saying none could have survived. As I read the clipping my daughter who was very upset about what had happened the day before was brought to tiers and said, “They survived”? They were banged up but home for Christmas. I think we have started a new tradition this year. My grown children and their spouse will look for Christmas miracles and share them on Christmas Eve. I just get tired on your constant whining - like Debbie Downer... The US is abusing Canada, George Bush ######, the military is sticking to your husband, health care is ruining your family, the Ward takes advantage of you and expect you and you alone to do all the work, your boss is a jerk, your new boss hates Mormons... etc. It the constant barrage negativism and 'I'm a victim.' Ever notice how some people don't have tons and tons of horrible experiences pouring down on them or don't have to tell everybody about it if they do? And other people are either just snake bit with poisonous karma or at least act like it? Well I think people create their karma. Quote
Setheus Posted December 26, 2005 Report Posted December 26, 2005 You wanna hear a sob story, WELL, I got a sob story. You see on Christmas Eve I went to see Sugarbay and I thought it would be fun to suprise her so I just arrived at her home in Montana with some flowers and a few gifts. I knocked on the door and She yell through the door to "wait just a minute. I need to get dressed"....well, a few long minutes go by and suddenly there are two Sheriff deputies pulling up into the drive. next thing I know I'm sitting in the county jail for 2 days on stalking charges and trespassing! I try to call my command to let them know whats going on and they inform me that I'll be put on restriction if I dont get back before my leave is up. GRRRR so, I finally get my brother to bond me out and I'm heading home when my car breaks down in the middle of no where. I start to walk to a gas station I passed about 20 miles back when suddenly I'm attacked by a bear and I die from a cracked open skull. Talk about the worst Christmas EVER! Quote
