I love some of the Signature Books stuff. Two of my Signature favorites:

New Mormon History (edited by Michael Quinn)

Articles of Faith by James Talmage

It's been a WHILE since signature published anything like Articles of Faith.

2003.

It's a photostatic reproduction of the original Articles of Faith, unchanged, which the Church no longer publishes, and contains a substantive scholarly introduction on the writing of the book by Elder Talmage.

There is an older volume published by Signature, entitled Saints Without Halos. This is a collection of biographies written by Leonard Arrington which show the human face of LDS history.

The books that I have that I can recommend are:

The Mormon Hierarchy: Origins of Power and The Mormon Hierarchy: Extensions of Power by D. Michael Quinn

I was really disappointed by this book. Excellent research, very poor interpretation.

In Sacred Lonliness: The Plural Wives of Joseph Smith by Todd Compton

I liked the book. Todd was very straightforward in mentioning his opinions. Excellent research. Easy to see his opinion vs. the data, where Quinn conflates the two unconscionably, IMO.
