tubaloth Posted June 9, 2010 Report Posted June 9, 2010 I think I thought of this last year. My Dad said in his High Priest meeting some guy was talking about Lagoon day. For those not in utah, Lagoon is medium sized Amusement park here in Utah.Lagoon - It's what fun is!Its open all days (Even Sundays) and I do think they serve alcohol there. (not sure the details of it). Almost as long as I can remember, each ward and or stake gets discount tickets to Lagoon. These are passed around at church. I do remember back in the day when it used to be a stake or ward activity. I don’t think they do it that much, its more just discount tickets. As far as I know this is the only Money Making venture that has found its ways into the chapel doors? Is it just me, or is it strange that the church still allows this?Do we know why or how this got started? applepansy Posted June 9, 2010 Report Posted June 9, 2010 I remember as a child (back in the early 60s, Lagoon was free to walk in. You paid for the rides, food, and carnival like games. I'm not sure when this started but Wards would have picnics in one of the boweries. There would usually be a potluck lunch and then families could go off and do whatever. It was the equivalent of having a Ward party at a park. Usually the kids went off and had a blast running from ride to ride while the parents talked. There was supervision, but not like you'd expect today. I remember I couldn't go too far and try to get in trouble without somebody in our ward calling me on it. All the parents watched out for all the kids. Lagoon changed when they bought and moved Pioneer Village to their park (I was a teenager at the time). It wasn't 5 years later that they began charging to enter the grounds. Which was a violation of their agreement to never charge to see Pioneer Village. I doubt the agreement was in writing, more just a media message to placate those opposed to moving Pioneer Village to Lagoon. Since then its just been a tradition. I'm not surprised Lagoon still offers discounts to Wards/Stakes however, I am surprised Wards/Stakes are passing out the discounts at church on Sunday. If a Ward/Stake choses to make the offer available it should be through the Home Teachers or Visiting Teachers. Especially since these Lagoon Days are rarely a Ward or Stake activity any longer. Just my two cents worth. I miss the old days when Lagoon was a park where it was relatively safe for children to run and Wards/Stakes to hold get-togethers. As a teenager I remember spending evenings there in groups and just having fun. There wasn't much trouble to get into unless you were really looking for it. Sadly that's not the case today. Quote
john doe Posted June 9, 2010 Report Posted June 9, 2010 I have never seen or heard of tickets being made available through church sources. Personally, I don't care for Lagoon. Quote
applepansy Posted June 9, 2010 Report Posted June 9, 2010 I have never seen or heard of tickets being made available through church sources. Personally, I don't care for Lagoon. Our Stake Lagoon day is this Friday. The tickets were available in RS. They were on the front table for anyone who wanted to pick them up. It was announced in Sacrament Meeting. Quote
ryanh Posted June 9, 2010 Report Posted June 9, 2010 I have lived 15 minutes away from Lagoon for 8 years now. Never once have I heard of any sort of tickets, or even any mention, of Lagoon in anything connected to the Church. Where do you get this idea that each ward and stake get tickets? Are you talking Farmington? Seems a bit broad of a statement. Perhaps are there owners/top managers in the stake where you reside that often pass out tickets? Quote
pam Posted June 9, 2010 Report Posted June 9, 2010 (edited) As far as I know this is the only Money Making venture that has found its ways into the chapel doors?I disagree, I think it's geographical. Growing up in San Diego we had Mormon Night at Disneyland and Mormon Night at Sea World. Also not once have I been asked for money inside the chapel. Edited June 9, 2010 by pam Quote
applepansy Posted June 9, 2010 Report Posted June 9, 2010 Ryan I grew up in Brountiful and lived in several wards in the Bountiful/Woods Cross area until 16 years ago. I now live in the Upper Ogden Valey. I'm not lying when I say the tickets were on the table on RS on Sunday and the announcement was made. I'm not lying that each Ward we lived in announced a Stake Lagoon Day. Quote
pam Posted June 9, 2010 Report Posted June 9, 2010 We have stake Lagoon day as well. I've never been interested in going so I am unsure how they distributed the tickets. But it is announced in Church and in the ward bulletin. Quote
ryanh Posted June 9, 2010 Report Posted June 9, 2010 Did I accuse you of lying AP? If you look at the timing of our posts, you will note they are very close in time. Your post did not exist when I hit the reply button, and shared what I have seen in the years I have lived close to Lagoon. That is not calling a person a liar in my book. Quote
pam Posted June 9, 2010 Report Posted June 9, 2010 In applepansy's defense I can see how she might take that your post was directed her way. You didn't direct your post at anyone in particular and yours did follow hers. So very easy to have been misunderstood. Quote

pam Posted June 10, 2010 Report Posted June 10, 2010 We've also had Mormon Night at the Padres games. Quote
pam Posted June 10, 2010 Report Posted June 10, 2010 (edited) Mormon night at Dodger Stadium. Dodger Stadium? Are you sure those aren't excommunicated Mormons? Edited June 10, 2010 by pam Quote

aruth5000 Posted June 27, 2010 Report Posted June 27, 2010 Its open all days (Even Sundays) and I do think they serve alcohol there. (not sure the details of it). Lagoon has very very few times they have alcohol that they sale and that is when a company orders it for their company parties there. I would know i worked in foods. :)oh and for the record its not just Utah wards and stakes theres also some in Idaho that come :)p.s. the food employees find stake lagoon days very annoying :) Quote

Does Disneyland and Sea world not realize that there are plenty of LDS outside CA? Quote
pam Posted June 27, 2010 Report Posted June 27, 2010 These nights were always after Disneyland and Sea World closed down to the general public for the night and the Mormon Nights were from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Though this hasn't been done in years that I'm aware of anyway as the LDS population has grown quite a bit since I was young. As far as offering this to LDS outside of CA, it was offered to them. It was "Mormon Night at Disneyland." Not Mormon San Diego Night at Disneyland. And yes it was announced over the pulpit but always announced that we should see so and so for more details. Quote

Are you talking Farmington? Seems a bit broad of a statement. Perhaps are there owners/top managers in the stake where you reside that often pass out tickets?I lived in Kaysville most of my life, remember almost every year there would be some type of Lagoon day. When I was at the Singles Stake in Ogden (Weber) they had so many discount ticket pamphlets that they were overflowing the building. I'm not sure how a ward or stake choose which day to do it? I don't think its all LDS for the same day (that would be to many). So it seems like the day is arranged a head time. Lagoon has very very few times they have alcohol that they sale and that is when a company orders it for their company parties there. I would know i worked in foods. It has been a couple of years sense I have been to Lagoon, but last time I was there I do remember a couple of lines where people were getting beer. I was more shocked because it hadn't noticed it before. These places were rare (maybe 2 in the whole park). Maybe things have changed. Quote
john doe Posted June 28, 2010 Report Posted June 28, 2010 Well if it makes you feel better, they also do 'days' for many other businesses around Northern Utah as well. I know of at least 5 companies that my wife or I have been involved with where they had 'Lagoon Day' or discount ticket week. I imagine they probably give out discount tickets to any large group they can identify, religious or not. They're just trying to market themselves and get people through the gates, and if they have to entice you to go by offering discounts, then that's what they'll do. Personally, I don't go unless the company is having its company party there and you have to be present to win prizes. At half price, Lagoon is barely worth the cost to me. Quote
