How to Dedicate a home?

Had a visit from my visiting teachers today and they mentioned that you can have your home blessed/dedicated and by doing that it can help keep Satan out. I hadn't ever heard of such a thing and am going to mention this to my husband when he gets home tonight from work. I am a convert and still learning about a lot of things. Since I have days when I feel a heaviness bearing down on me - and it doesn't make any sense since I am doing things that I know to be right and living the Gospel as best as I can. They suggested this might help. Anyhow, I wanted to know if this is an official process or more like a blessing whereby my husband will just speak what words he feels prompted to say?? The handbook doesn't specify. but it doesn't say that houses can be dedicated. It specifically uses the word "home," which would mean -- for most people -- either a house or an apartment. I see no reason why a dorm wouldn't qualify. If you attend a Church school, however, it would be moot and repetitive. Maybe check with your bishop when you arrive at school.

Well, i'm planning on going to BYU-I. And I was thinking there may be no point..then again My yw told me about her roommates and some things they were doing.....and I'd rather avoid that.

It does say that for dedicating homes that family members can gather and in essence ask for blessings and protections on the home. I think asking that a dorm room may be a safe place, filled with the Spirit would be appropriate.

I remember my dad doing this for our homes growing up. The house hubby and I reside in now is not dedicated. I would assume you'd have to be an active/worthy member to have such thing done, yes?

The handbook (linked above) specifies that you can have a home teacher or other family member do it.
