Saintmichaeldefendthem1 Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 It seems Mexican president Felipe Calderon has gotten the decisive upperhand in his "negotiations" with Obama gaining a serious concession that would allow Mexican trucks to travel freely in the United States while avoiding many of the DOT laws and regulations that American carriers have to abide by. How did the Mexicans do it? By imposing tarrifs on U.S. imports and agreeing to lift them only after the first Mexican truck driver successfully completes a trip into U.S. territory. The Mexican trucks would not have to be compliant with the new EPA 2010 environmental standards, nor would the drivers be subject to hours of service regulations. These drivers would be able to drive directly to U.S. based customers bypassing the need for American drivers and this will have an impact on jobs. I myself have taken several loads to Laredo, TX, a transfer city where Mexican trucks pick up dropped trailers and bring them to destination in Mexico. Others bring trailers from Mexico to be transferred to American carriers and so on. Having been a frequent visitor to Laredo, I can say that thousands of American carriers daily are bringing loads there. Mexicans now being able to circumvent this process will cost many jobs. And "pro union" Obama did this? On another front, Obama was asked if a policy requiring DEA agents in Mexico to be unarmed could be revisited in light of a recent killing of an unarmed DEA agent. He responded that we have to abide by Mexican law and that DEA agents only serve an advisory function in Mexico, a fact that didn't protect the agent that was murdered by cartel members. Aside from the juxtaposition of Americans having to abide by Mexican laws while Mexican truckers are exempted from ours, this serves as yet another example of how weak our president is. Considering the steady stream of foreign aid that we give to Mexico, we couldn't even gain this one little concession to protect our agents over there? Really?? Quote
PrinceofLight2000 Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 Liberal foreign policy floundering persists in making me do this: Quote
Matthew0059 Posted March 7, 2011 Report Posted March 7, 2011 I'm laughing at the picture. I don't know how accurate a representation of the policy it is. Does anyone have links to more information about it? I don't have the time to go looking... Okay, maybe I have the time, but just not the desire... Quote

Really??this is more arguable tho. and while being lined side by side with the previous situation, would seem silly, but it isn't- this involves all sorts of redtape on both sides, as well as representing the government... for maby of the same reasons that the DEA can't continue pursuits across the border without getting proper authorizations and etc.. prophetofdoom Posted March 7, 2011 Report Posted March 7, 2011 Another example of America having its hands tied. We can't compete with a world that has people working for 10 cents an hour, no environmental regulation, lower taxes, etc. Quote
talisyn Posted March 7, 2011 Report Posted March 7, 2011 Nice essay, please cite your sources? Because I'm pretty sure this Mexican truck driver thing has been in the pipeline for about 15 years now, during the whole NAFTA start... Quote
talisyn Posted March 7, 2011 Report Posted March 7, 2011 Here's a nice article on the subject, just for starters. Drivers protest Mexico truck plan - U.S. news - Life - msnbc.comupdated 9/6/2007 10:38:01 PM ETNAFTA requires that all roads in the United States, Mexico and Canada be opened to carriers from all three countries. Canadian trucking companies already have full access to U.S. roads, but Mexican trucks can travel only about 20 miles inside the country at certain border crossings. The pilot program is designed to study whether opening the U.S.-Mexico border to all trucks could be done safely. Coupled with NAFTA and Mexican truck drivers, Chinese goods can be brought to US market for less that they are now by bypassing US drivers and (unionized) US port workers. Quote
talisyn Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 Gee, you'd think making cheap products by cheap labor would offset American truck driver wages...I guess every penny counts Quote
Saintmichaeldefendthem1 Posted March 17, 2011 Author Report Posted March 17, 2011 Concerning cheap labor, Americans can very well compete with Vietnamese and Malaysians making 35 cents per hour. That's not why businesses are moving overseas; they are doing so because our corporate tax rate of 35% coupled with burdensome regulations making going overseas more appealing. Apart from these taxes, Americans would be the preferred work force because of our efficiency. Our technology and management systems give us an advantage over foreign workers or put another way, we accomplish far more with fewer laborers to such a degree as to overcome the wage disparity between American workers and cheap foreign labor. Democrats answer the jobs-going-overseas problem by getting people to hate the evil corporations instead of doing the effective and needed thing, to drop corporate tax rates to 15% and shift many regulations to the states who can provide better solutions for local needs. It must be the evil corporations. That's what the politicians are saying.Haven't you heard? Taxes are sacrosanct; they fund those social programs that are so vital to our American liberties. Can you imagine the horror of a United States without Social Security or Obamacare?!You must be a hate-mongering right-wing corporate hack. Stop killing old people and eating middle-class babies![/union][/sarcasm] Quote
talisyn Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 ok, then, let's play with this. the us gov't just eliminated corp. taxes: now what? Quote
