a friend related this story to me

"I was called in to my bishop office to recieve a calling and he offered me one, i said wow i was way off, he ask what do you mean, I said I have been feeling for sometime that i would be called as the gospel doctrine teacher, he sat back and asked for how long have you felt this way, I said for about a month, he said with a smile i have felt that way my self for a month, I then ask, why did you not call me to that calling, he said it is complicated one of my Counselor does not agree, so we choose something else for you".

So I ask what does this mean for my friend and what does this mean for his bishop.

I think if the lord has told both of them, it should happen.

Ultimately its the Bishop's call and if he's paying attention to the Spirit it won't matter if his counselor agrees.

When my husband was in the Bishopric as a counselor they often had to all agree on a name before they extended a call. However, if the Bishop had strong feelings about something he acted on it and explained the feelings to his counselors, who both supported the Bishop completely especially when they didn't agree. Often callings would unfilled for months months before everyone came to the same name.

I hope you're friend's Bishop will follow what the Spirit tell him and that his counselor will be supportive too.

So far the other calling was taken back and my buddy was told to wait a few weeks while the bishop thinks about what they are to do.

Welcome to the real world of how things work in the church.

Maybe the bishop needs to do what the brethren do and wait for a unanimous vote.

Oh...and the person getting issued the call has a voice too. They can say, "No. I don't really feel the spirit on that decision." Might force the bishop to rethink his decision.

Lift Where You Stand - general-conference

When traveling to the stakes of Zion for the purpose of reorganizing a stake presidency, I have sometimes been surprised when, during an interview, a brother would tell me that he had received an impression that he would be in the next presidency.

When I first heard this, I wasn’t sure how to react.

It took some time before the Holy Spirit gave me understanding. I believe that the Lord has a certain calling for every man. Sometimes He grants spiritual promptings telling us that we are worthy to receive certain callings. This is a spiritual blessing, a tender mercy from God.

But sometimes we do not hear the rest of what the Lord is telling us. “Although you are worthy to serve in this position,” He may say, “this is not my calling for you. It is my desire instead that you lift where you stand.” God knows what is best for us.

I have had similar promptings in the past. I was certain that I would get called to teach Sunday School. Instead I was called to the Elders' Quorum Presidency. After reflecting on it, I realized that the Bishopric was prepared to give me that calling, but the Elders' Quorum President felt inspired that I should be called. I think President Uchtdorf's perspective is spot on here. I could have served very well in the Sunday School, but I was needed in the Elders' Quorum presidency. Perhaps had I been thinking more about that position I would have gotten more of a confirmation in that direction as well (not necessarily an exercise I recommend). I did get a confirmation that the calling extended was the calling for me.

If your friend asked me for advice, I would say don't close the door on this other calling just yet.

I don't worry so much about what this means for the Bishop because that is his mantle, not mine.

Callings are a funny thing. I was recently released as the Young Women president in my ward. I found out right before church started, so I had no warning, and was a complete mess at church. Often, I've had spiritual foresight when changes were coming for me -- not this time. I had no clue at all. In the same interview in which I was released, I was extended a call to serve on the Relief Society board. The RS president is a good friend of mine -- we're personal friends, but we've also served on the Ward Council together for over two years. She told me later that for a few weeks, she'd had a nagging feeling where my name kept coming for a particular role on the board. It troubled her, because she typically has a strict don't-mess-with-presidencies rule when it comes to calling sisters in her organization. But my name kept coming up for her, so she went ahead and submitted it. I don't know if that was the catalyst for my release (doubtful, as there were a number of other more compelling circumstances), or if it was the Lord warning her instead of me. It worked out well for me because it meant I didn't get called into Primary (hallelujah!).

Anyway, not necessarily completely relevant, but I wanted to share anyway.
