i've always gotten my callings in person.

what you will do will be somewhat dependant upon the needs of the ward or branch you are in. there is a handbook of instruction the primary pres should be able to give you a copy of the sectary's portion, that will tell you the offical stuff. aslo just ask the primary pres. she knows you know nothing about this and will teach you what to do. be pacient with yourself, it takes time to learn and none are perfect or come in knowing what to do.

take the opportunity to learn to hear the spirit. callings are great testamony builders. congrats

also lds.org has some info on serving in the church you could look up

Thanks ALmom. :) What makes it difficult to ask the person giving you this calling "What does an X do?" or "How can I be the best X I can be?"

Just curious,

Callings are to be extended to members in a quiet and reverent place. They are not to be extended in hallways or just in passing. This has happened in the past and is not the way it is to be done.

There is nothing wrong with asking "What will I be doing or What is expected of me?" Calling is given by a member of the Bishopric that is over the area you will be serving in. They will usually refer you to the President of that organization for the specific duties that the head of the organization would have you do.

Primary secretary is an excellent place for a fairly new convert to begin to see the organization and operation of one of many organizations within the LDS church.

Thank you Ben. I was not implying that it would be/should be done outside of this,

So it is appropriate to ask the Pres those questions. You are not left out on your own. There is a resource-not a "sink or swim" type of duty.

Thank you

Dr. T., not a problem. I didn't think otherwise. I thought it was a good question.

Many times in the LDS church we are called to positions that by training or experience we are unprepared to serve in. From my understanding the Lord asks us to do all we can and with the guidance of the Holy Ghost and tolerant members we can fullfil our obligations to the Lord.

Through personal experience I know that the Lord doesn't always call the qualified to serve; the Lord qualifies the called.

Which makes me want to relate the story of my wifes first calling.....She was called to be the Relief Society music chorister...(she selects the hymns and leads the members in sing them). When she first got the calling she was a nervous wreck, she had sleepless nights worrying about what it...she knew none of the hymns, she had no musical education, she felt she couldn't even sing well....but she magnified her calling by forging ahead, learning the basics of leading music and practiced singing the hymns before each Sunday.....in no time it became second nature to her and after a year and a half when she was released she was in tears because she loved her calling....but she went on to something new and has magnified that calling too. You are correct in stating that the Lord qualifies the called. My first calling in the church was a doosy....I was call as a stake missionary (they used to have those). I had no idea what I was doing...I was new to the church, didn't know much and had to commit to 10 hours a week with the full time missionaries and setting up splits appointments with the ward mission leader and ward members. I had no clue.....but with some hard work it all paid off, not so much for the stake but for me....it helped me to learn about the Gospel and it increased my testimony 100 fold. No calling is more important to the Lord than the calling which you hold. He knows your heart, he knows that you can sucessfully complete your calling.

When I got a calling for the first time, I remember, I was very nervous. I didn't know if I would do it right or not. Fortunately, we can ask God for help and He shows us the way, maybe through the Scriptures or a brother o sister's help, or maybe reading the manuals. But most important of all is letting The Holy Ghost guide us. I remember an experience about it. I was in front of the members of my stake in Trujillo, Peru several years ago. I was starting my speech and I was feeling so nervous, my hands were sweating ( ...but suddenly I felt something that started from my head to my toes. My heart started to beat normally, I felt an incredible peace and I could be able to give my talk in a natural way, and I made some jokes too... I'm sure that on that day the Lord helped me through the Holy Ghost and I said all the things He wanted me to say to the members. :D

I remember when I was called to be a executive secretary to the Bishop of my ward. I had and have, no skills, as a secretary. And yet, I did my best and the Lord made up the rest. I was shocked to hear the Bishop say that he would really miss me, when I was called to another position, by the stake.

I think my story shows that you are exactly right.

PS; please don't let this question, change the tread. Ben can you tell me if there is any thing to do in Vegas? I will be back on the second and spending every other week in your town. I'll take any help you can give me.
