CommanderSouth Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 If I do a church service mission can I get a name tag? I missed being able to do a proselyting mission, but plan to do a CSM (one of the internet work from home ones). I have always been fascinated with having a name tag as odd as that sounds, and was wondering if that is something I can get as a service missionary. Quote
Guest Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 My parents did a service mission at a church camp one summer, and I believe they had tags. Quote
mnn727 Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 The Service missionaries we have do have name tags. Quote
pam Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 Is there a reason that a name tag is so important? Quote
CommanderSouth Posted September 5, 2012 Author Report Posted September 5, 2012 I don't know. I always liked the name tags the missionaries have. And thought that would be cool to get one. Mind you, I am a little torn on thinking about this point, part of me thinks it's simple eccentricities while another thinks it's me getting hung up on the outward signs of what I am doing, following the lines of the pharisees disfiguring themselves while fasting. And option 3 is, I am being too hard on myself... Quote
Backroads Posted September 5, 2012 Report Posted September 5, 2012 I had a college professor who was only teaching as a service mission. I don't recall him having a name tag, though we did have to call him "Elder" instead of the BYU-I standard "Brother". Quote

I had a friend make me one in college that said, "Molly Mormon." "Molly" back then was kind of an honorary title in our little cohort. It meant any girl who was true to her covenants and cool too. :) Anyway, there was a little shop in the university mall that would make them. Quote
john doe Posted September 6, 2012 Report Posted September 6, 2012 Name tags would be used to identify yourself to others as you come upon them in performing the duties you have been assigned to do as a missionary. Even Ward Missionaries generally only wear their tags (if they even have them) while they are out and about doing missionary work. I'm a little confused as to how your wearing a name tag while working from home on the computer will help others identify you as a missionary. Wouldn't it be more helpful to have an avatar that identified you as a missionary? Wouldn't that make more sense? If you are really determined to have a name tag, I suggest you bring the subject up with whoever you report to on your service mission and they can give guidance as to whether or not one is needed in your situation. Sharky Posted September 6, 2012 Report Posted September 6, 2012 Ward Misssionaries do frequently have & wear a missionary name tag. Church Service Missionaries ussually have one; however, what the name tag has on it frequently depends on the location & setting. When I served as a Church Service Missionary (since I was unable to do a full-time mission due to a health issue), my name tage had "Brother ____ ____ with both given & surname. The name tag identified my position (job title) but did not identify me as a missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The name tag was essentially the same as the regular volunteers, except instead of black lettering on white tag like the volunteers had, mine was white lettering on a black tag like most missionaries have. Near the end of that mission they made new name tags that simpley had "Brother" and my surname. Thta name tag identified "Church Serivce Missionary" the assigned "Department" and the "Facility". Again, these were black with white lettering. The regular volunteers had white name tags that identified them as a volunteer. Even today, several decades later, the name tags used for church service missionaries are generally based on the "appropriateness of the setting". Though more & more they are indicating The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on the tags. Quote
