Temple sealing after already married 5 years

My husband and I were in active in the church for many years prior to meeting on LDSPlanet. We still were after we moved in together and got engaged. We started to go back as we prepared to get married, but since we didn't know how long it would take us to truly be ready for a temple sealing we decided to get married civilly. My father passed away during the planning and then my husband began nursing school so we ended up just having our Bishop (and two missionaries as witnesses)meet us at a local park to marry us. Ever since we both have been sad that we never got the full experience with sharing the day with family and friends. Plus, i never got to wear the dress my father saw me in (in pics) while he was in the hospital with Leukemia. I still have it ,tags attached and all, 4 years later. Since getting married in '09, my hubby graduated school, we had our son (now 15 mos), and we have moved back to Utah to be near my family. We are now talking with Bishop about preparing for the temple. In planning for it... Would it be weird to treat it as our "true wedding"? Having a small reception and me wearing my wedding dress etc?? My dress would have to be altered since its strapless and it would only be for after the temple as it is ivory and champagne. I would have to get a "temple dress" unless I sell the other and Just get one that's all white and temple ready. Any advice or suggestions??? My mind is reeling lol Plus, we want to make sure our son is included in whatever we do... Not like we would need a ring bearer so what to do? :/

sure go for it!!! Get to the temple!!! Seal your family together!!! So its been five years, thats the past. If your temple ready do it. It will be a very special day and I'm sure it will bond you and your husband, closer then you are now. As for a reception or small get together with family and friends to celebrate if thats what u want, then do it. As far as I know you cant wear your temple dress to your reception. You can wear your old dress with alterations, or go out and treat yourself to a new dress for afterwards. What ever u desided to do, it will be a wonderful spiritual day....Let us know what you deside to do.....

Some good questions! Me and my wife have been married over 10 years also and we finally getting ready to go be sealed in the temple hopefully this year. We have had a lot of ups and downs that prevented us form going before so we are excited to finally be sealed.

We had a lot of the same questions as to what is appropriate as far as receptions or what not. I think we were ven planning on having a honeymoon as we didnt really get a honeymoon when we 1st got married civilly.

Looking forward to read everyone answers as well!

I think it is a beautiful idea to celebrate it as your real wedding...in a sense it is.

My suggestion is have your wedding dress altered and wear it for a reception (I would specify on the invitations "no gifts please"...so people understand you are celebrating, but not expecting gifts...they might give you gifts anyway. :))

For the actual ceremony, I suggest a regular temple dress...the kind they sell as part of the normal temple clothing. Then you can wear it every time you return to the temple and be reminded of the special day when you were sealed. One of my daughters YW leaders did that, and she has inspired my daughter to do it as well. If I had it to do again, I would do the same because the fancy wedding dress is really just a distraction IMO in the temple. :)

Congratulations and enjoy!

My reading of this reads that this is all about you and your "bride" experience you you missed. My opinion is that a family sealing event is not the place to be looking to create that experience. You have a son. This is now a sealing of the family. Different than joining 2 in marriage. Your son will be there to be sealed together.

again just my opinoin.
