Well, it happened again. Myself and several others finished hymns today long before the organist did--under our breath singing at the tempo mentioned atop the page.

I know doing so is probably some form of irreverent mocking, but every song this organist plays is a funeral march. A friend mentioned playing some hymns on the piano in her own home and having a neighbor kid ask fearfully why she was playing the hymn "sacrilegiously" (she was playing it based on the official church CD she had heard) because this kid had never heard it any way but deathly slow.

I kind of want to tear my hair out with these painfully slow renditions of EVERYTHING. Slow does not necessarily mean reverent.

"Slow does not necessarily mean reverent."

That is a true statement. It drives me crazy when hymns are turned into dirges too. I notice that the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sings their music at a good clip. It's hard to make a joyful noise when you are doing it in slow motion.

Perhaps you could volunteer to play the organ, learning 3-4 songs every week and getting them right.

Look I hate songs played like funeral dirges also, but is your organist even capable of playing correctly? Its not like he or she is a professional.

I have been branch chorister in my tiny branch since I 16 and have hate it when you have a pianist who plays slow especially when it is a long song. On the flip side as we dont have a pianist we sign along to the church cds and more than once I have had to fight to get the congregation to sign in time with the cd, as for signing joyfully or victoriously I have given up they seem happy to sound they are signing a funeral march!

I don't know the organ, but I have been the pianist multiple times and am quite familiar with learning half a dozen songs a week. She can play the organ well, but has no interest in paying attention to how the song should be played. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect someone to put a little more effort into one's calling and giving it one's best. She's not up there plunking keys nervously, she is set in her ways.
