LT04 Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 Hey all, Xhenli brought to my attention that I could be possibly incorrect as to what the definition of Avatar is. I did feel comfortable starting this topic in the gospel discussion board b/c the way I understand it is that its reserved for LDS doctrine. An Avatar the way I was taught is a G-d or a demi-G-d that posses immortal power like Christ did in his life here on earth. The key difference is that when Christ was resurrected that made him different than an Avatar b/c an Avatar will always have a manifestation on earth via reincarnation. I have always undeersttod this to be an Eastern religon thing mostly Hindu. Just wondering what your thoughts are on this, -LT04 Quote
MaidservantX Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1) - Cite This Source av·a·tar /ˈævəˌtɑr, ˌævəˈtɑr/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[av-uh-tahr, av-uh-tahr] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation –noun 1. Hindu Mythology. the descent of a deity to the earth in an incarnate form or some manifest shape; the incarnation of a god. 2. an embodiment or personification, as of a principle, attitude, or view of life. 3. Computers. a graphical image that represents a person, as on the Internet. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Origin: 1775–85; < Skt avatāra a passing down, equiv. to ava down + -tāra a passing over] So, LT, maybe you are talking mostly definition #1 and I am more bringing up definition #2. Also # 3 uses the word image. 'An image that represents' or an 'embodiment' or 'incarnation' or a 'manifestation' of some power or being, is kind of how I use the word and, therefore, apply to myself. Quote
Canuck Mormon Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 The only thing I know about Avatars is that my son watches a cartoon called "the Avatar". It is about a re-icarnated god who is supposed to help unite the four kingdoms. Land, Air, Water & Fire. I don't pay too much attention to it, it's on early Saturday mornings when I'm usually sleeping. I know this wasn't much help, but........ Quote
LT04 Posted April 13, 2007 Author Report Posted April 13, 2007 I thought that the G-d had to stay in his / her mortal form. Didn't know they could come or go as they pleased. Thats interesting. Yeah its one of those who's on first whats on second kind of words I guess. I've seen the show got lots of neice's and nephew's don't think my in-laws TV get any other channels other then Nick & Disney. -LT04 Quote

MaidservantX Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 ok, lol, but why do you think they decided that those little pics on the internet that 'represent' 'embody' 'personify' 'manifest' 'incarnate' (in the binary world) and 'image' YOU should be called avatars??? some people take their internet seriously -- conceiving it as a virtual world into which we pour our true (and hidden) natures (those true, hidden natures sittin on their bums in front of the monitor). LT04 Posted April 14, 2007 Author Report Posted April 14, 2007 Xhenli, I think thats b/c as your fads change you change your pics, you are still the same person just the external appearance changes from "life time" to "life time" -LT04 Quote
