JcDean78 Posted April 28, 2007 Report Posted April 28, 2007 Guys and Gals, you might want to head over to the conservative site and help stand up for us LDS peoples. This guy wrote an article and is calling us a cult. He comes off as a bigot to me and there are some really good LDS responses to him so far, but I end up seeing a lot of anti LDS stuff over there and hope to see more of my friends from over here help represent. This is a great site as well for other conservative articles and such... if you happen to lean that way. http://www.townhall.com/columnists/FrankPa...p;comments=true Quote
a-train Posted April 30, 2007 Report Posted April 30, 2007 Don't bother with this trifler. Let your mind be circumspect and be ever carefull to avoid contention. That is all the anti wants is controversy and the accompanying public attention. -a-train Quote
JcDean78 Posted April 30, 2007 Author Report Posted April 30, 2007 More than anything, I enjoyed the LDS responses there. They helped show what our Church is really about and it is good to know that there is a good size LDS presence over at Townhall. I just find it very disturbing that it seems the very people we are in the trenches with are some of our biggest attackers. Hard to share a fox hole when you got your ally taking jabs at you constatnly. Quote
sixpacktr Posted May 1, 2007 Report Posted May 1, 2007 I have grown a little tired of Townhall, as it seems a lot of these guys are over there. Mr. Adams is another one that likes to take shots are the Mormons. I read some of the articles, but for the most part don't go over there anymore... Quote
the_jason Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 First of all, we are a cult. (Look it up) Second of all, I'm not interested in getting into a debate about my beliefs. Doing so is of the devil, just as those who bear false witness. Anti-mormons are just glorified attention-getters. Do not indulge in a debate, for that is exactly what they want. All we can do is bear testimony. Quote
JcDean78 Posted May 2, 2007 Author Report Posted May 2, 2007 I do not agree that we are a cult. We are the restored Church, the original Church. We are not some cult. Quote
the_jason Posted May 2, 2007 Report Posted May 2, 2007 Cult1. a particular system of religious worship, esp. with reference to its rites and ceremonies. 2. an instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing, esp. as manifested by a body of admirers: the physical fitness cult. 3. the object of such devotion. 4. a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc. A cult is not always negative or evil. sixpacktr Posted May 3, 2007 Report Posted May 3, 2007 Several times that designation (cult) has been thrown at me by some of my friends that were born again Christians. I would smile and tell them that all of Christianity is a cult, and if they doubted me, to look up the definition of what a cult is in the dictionary. Then I would tell them that their veneration of the Savior was cult like . Then they'd throw at me that cult meant we sang over dead pigs in the graveyard at midnight, all the while dressed up like Joe Smith, or some other such nonsense. I always had a good time with it... CrimsonKairos Posted May 6, 2007 Report Posted May 6, 2007 You mean your priest's quorum never danced over dead pigs? You poor deprived soul! B) Quote
LukeAir2006 Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 I do not agree that we are a cult. We are the restored Church, the original Church. We are not some cult.Jason was using the word CULT in the correct way. Look up the dictionary definition my learned friend. We are a cult, and ironically so are they. Quote
FrankJL Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 Then they'd throw at me that cult meant we sang over dead pigs in the graveyard at midnight, all the while dressed up like Joe Smith,I may be a new member, but I don't remember that lesson in the missionary discussions... Quote
sixpacktr Posted May 22, 2007 Report Posted May 22, 2007 It is only discussed in secret meetings during PH. You know, when we talk about blood oaths and Danites and how we're spending the millions in tithing to take over the world! I'm surprised you haven't heard yet. It's usually the 3rd After Baptism Lesson, you know, the one titled "Now That We've Got You!". It's right after "The Ins and Outs of Polygamy: how to hide your others wives in the Basement" and "Priesthood Authority: WE Will Tell You What To Do From Now On!" Quote
a-train Posted May 23, 2007 Report Posted May 23, 2007 All kidding aside, the 'c' word is useless in my opinion. It is just as useless as 'unorthodox'. They are relative terms that seem to only present a sense of spiritual superiority in the minds of the so-called 'orthodox'. The common usage of 'cult' has become nothing more than an ignorant meaningless slander. It's only purpose is generally to instill fear and suspicion. The image of a deceptive leadership coercing a gullible following into ridiculous folly and depravation is brought to mind by the dark feel and sound of the word. Mormon's could easily say they are the only real 'orthodox' group. They could go around calling everyone else a 'cult'. But what purpose would these designations serve? Would we have much success in our missionary efforts if we went about claiming to be the most righteous people in the world? Are we the most righteous? If the LDS do possess the truth and the Restoration of the Church really has been done by the LORD Himself, then we stand far more accountable than the rest of the world. Are we obeying the commandments we have from the LORD better than the world obeys what commandments they have? So call us a cult, call us unorthodox, say we are not a cult, say we are orthodox, none of this matters. It brings no edification to the mind, for any real meaning conveyed in these terms is lost in great ambiguity and relativity. The term 'cult' only shows a prideful and bitter spirit in the soul of the body whose tongue lashes it against his fellow beings. Although it once held true meaning and could be used without benefit of such ill feelings, the strong connection has been made permanent and the term has been ruined, just as the name 'Hitler' and the symbol of the swastika. As far as I'm concerned, 'cult' has already become an 'N'-word. -a-train Quote
