I was kind of apathetic (I carry my 2 years supply with me, I'd always say), but then put in charge of EP as a member of the Bishopric and helped set it up in our ward with the EP Coordinator. Really opened my eyes, and made me realize that I'd better get off my duff! That, and we had a GA come to our stake a couple of years ago quoting Pres Hinckley about the signs of the times and he finished with "You've been warned, brethren". (during a PH Ldrshp meeting). When I was set apart, well, all I can say it was very very spiritual and very eye opening. I mean if people really knew.... you know?After I was set apart, I got in my car and drove along the wasatch front for nearly 3 hours getting inspiration. The next few weeks I worked on a 30 page emergency plan for our ward. We just rolled it out to our ward. It was a huge relief for me to get that done and in the hands of the ward members. In the valley, we have potential issues with earthquakes. But most people perhaps arent really even prepared for something as simple as a long power outage. Apparently they used the my basic plan for every ward in the stake. Im pretty ready now myself, of course, I have to be. My job is to organize the evacuation of the members if we need one. We have radios, maps, food - everything we need to get people out of the living spaces and over to the stake center if needed. We are going to have a mock drill/earthquake in a few months. That should be fun! We are going to test the radios I purchased and also test the plan.Anyways - those links are a start, I even had a website up for about a month so the members could see the plan online. Thank youWe currently aren't using a Public Address system to announce the codes. However, it certain wards a PA or public adress system (ie Bull Horn) wouldnt be a bad idea. In Utah, many wards are now in apartment complexes or condo complexes, so it would be very efficient to have a PA. The main purpose of the codes (as suggested in the Action Plans section), is to clarify what we are doing so rumors about what we are supposed to do are held to a minumum. Right now we are using three methods to communicate the action plans or codes...1) Home teachers2) Emergency Coordinator via FRS Radio3) Door to Door with Emergency Scout TeamsThe problem with our ward is the home teachers. We are very transient, so we have a back up with the FRS radios and the door to door Also all members have already gone to a Fireside where the action plans have been presented and a presentation CD was also given to them about what the actions plans are. The website at LDSReady.org was to help with new members coming in and out of the ward. Im hoping to have that up and running in a few days. It seems the church is really pushing the food supply in three tiers. 1) 72 hours. Emergency meds, water and food. Long storage like MRE, Granola bars or canned food. 2) Three months. Food you normally eat but three months supply of it. Obviously, if you eat a lot of salad, you may have to change your taste as salad has a shelf life of about 4 days. 3) One Year. Long term, large qty food items like Wheat and other grains and large qty of water. The section that Im working on will have to do with possible diet changes that will need to be made in order to accomidate a good rotation schedule for the 3 month storage items. I actually have been changing my diet for the past 4 months to experiment with the 3 month storage plan and found the following items below have a great storage length, and arent too far in terms of what I was eating before. Canned Meat: This is a real problem for many members. We are so used to buying fresh hamburger or steak and frozen chicken breasts that none of that will work without refrigeration. I have replaced those with the following. 1) Canned Beef/ Corned Beef (ie Hormel Corned Beef) 2) Canned Ham (ie DAK canned ham) 3) Canned Tuna fish (any brand you like) 4) canned Chicken (expensive, so you'll have to think on that) I never thought I would consider Corned beef, but I found out it makes a great chili, and also works with many mexican dishes. Canned ham is great on sandwiches or caseroles or even for breakfast. Tuna, of course in caseroles or sandwiches. same with chicken. The thing on these items is that you'll want the smallest can available that would feed you/your family for one meal. If you open a can, there wont be a way to refrigerate it afterwords and thats a waste! Just some ideas I thought I would through out there. I have the apartment 72 hour kit, and the car emergency / 72hour kit. I'm not so sure about doing the year's supply stage. I really don't think I have space in my little apartment for all of that.
