It was from your neighborhood that I and Mrs. Traveler escaped and Minneapolis that Mrs. Traveler was almost trapped. Take care out there.

The Traveler

I have some friends that I drove to the airport a couple weeks ago. They were going to visit his parents in California, and didn't even take heavy coats for their two-year-old twins. (They also have a newborn.) They were supposed to fly back into Cleveland last Friday night, through Chicago. Well, everything in and out of Chicago was cancelled, so they couldn't come. They managed to get to Chicago on Saturday, but then couldn't connect to Cleveland. So her parents, who live in Wisconsin, drove down and picked them up. Sunday morning they rented a car and drove home (normally about an eight hour drive for them). They left first thing in the morning, but ended up driving through the middle of the storm, and didn't get home until about 1am. :(

I think they had packed coats in the suitcases, but lighter ones. I've watched her twins on numerous occasions, and I know they each have a special blankie that goes with them everywhere, so that would have helped, too. Mostly, I bet they kept the heat blasting in the car.

I have another friend who also got stuck in Chicago (I think she had been in San Diego), and she had nine-month-old twins, a four-year-old, and a six-year-old. She was stuck for about three days.

It is 30 degrees here. Noontime. I'm taking my work to Starbucks... seems like the entire town decided the same thing.... this place is a zoo with all these people going in and out and cutting off people to the chairs like cars do in parking lots... and several of them are in parkas! PARKAS! Yes, this is Florida. LOL.

What I find cool is the good cheer of the workers who, I'm sure are going through a tough time with all these people yet are still so gracious and lively. It's fun to see how many people they know by name. I mean - there are regulars, like me, who camp here a lot (free internet!), and there are others who are also regulars but the come in and get out types, and then there are those who just came in because of the cold. And these workers know a whole lot of people by name!

The only bad thing is all the FSU fans peacocking all over the place. LOL.

I've been at home, except for church, since it's winter break. I finally went out today. It was about 2 degrees. There were lots of people at the mall - school has been closed for 2 days - people are probably going nuts and need to get out. I'm just gonna say it was cold. Really cold. But, the sun was out, I got a parking space close to the mall door, and when I popped in the grocery store, there was a sale on, so not a bad day. You have to take the good stuff where you find it. : )

Since I'm sitting around working on syllabi, etc., I've been watching a bunch of videos & movies about the race to the South Pole as well as Shackelton's exploits. Talk about cold. : )
