Winnie G Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 This summer both my husband and I have been reading the Work and the Glory books all 9. I read them years ago borrowing them (hard cover) I could never afford them, now in paper back I started to buy them two every pay day. My husband decided since I learned so much about church history from them he started to read them as well one book behind me. I'm on book 9 and almost finished. To my surprise I found my husband tuff guy that he is loves them, it is not odd to see us in a waiting room both reading. He finished 8 last night, no pressure now for me to finish Yes he cried in spots, he love to beat Josh and be Benjamin best friend. The things we have learned about the gospel as well have been well worth the time for all of us to read it. So Guys be a real man and read it as well! Quote
Guest Yediyd Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 I read these when I first joined the church...They gave me an awsome grounding in church history. I had the priviledge of going on a tour of some of the less famous sites of church history here in NY, Then of course...I toured the more famous ones. Those books brought it all to life for me. The story of Jane Mansfield touched my heart the most. Quote
FrankJL Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 9 books? More stuff to add to the summer reading list. doh...it is summer already. I'm kinda confused though. Is this a novel set, or a history book set, or one of those fiction based on real history deals? Quote
mrsfocus Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 They're like Forest Gump. You get history told by "someone who was there". If you just keep 'life is like a box of chocolates' in the back of your mind as you read, you'll enjoy them. Please don't quote from them in SS or RS, there's only so much sighing I can do. :) Quote

I love fiction...but I love it even more if I can learn something in the process. Quote
Winnie G Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 We read the King in the Crown series, three books by the same writer this fall. (out on paper back) They are awesome! The books take you along with a family that lives in the time of Jesus Christ. The reader takes away a feeling of being closer to Christ and a understanding of all the day by day application of the gospel in your every day life. We gave them as Christmas gifts this year to none LDS familys and friends, they loved them. I love the fact I know more about how it applies to me and my every day life. like the Work and the Glory books it brings those times alive. Your there really there and witness a Leper being healed. Bring a box of Kleenex, yes my husband too, :) Quote
Guest Yediyd Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 I have read those books as well, and if you loved them...might I suggest the AD Chronicals by Body and Brock Thoene...another awsome historical fiction series that takes place in the time of Christ but has links to modern day Jerusalem. Winnie G Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 were can I get them are they found in a LDS book store ??? Quote
Guest Yediyd Posted June 27, 2007 Report Posted June 27, 2007 were can I get them are they found in a LDS book store ???I found them in the library, then...I liked them so much that I bought them at Barns and Noble....I also bought other series by these authors...it turns out that there are at least three more series that tie in with the AD Chronicals. I am reading the Zion Covenant series right now and I love them!!!! Quote

robanah Posted June 30, 2007 Author Report Posted June 30, 2007 It rea;;y does put you right n the middle of early church history, you actually feel as if you were there. I just though, this falmily(the Steeds kind of remind me of the 7th heaven family(okay so this is wrong but hey,) The reason is simple, they tak ein other distrssed people and make them part of their famil(most of them marry into the family but hey then) I love the Steed Family even though they are completly fictional Quote
