I only read 1-4, but I've seen all of the movies. I can definitely see where the books could have offered more background to what went on in the later books, but I didn't find myself confused at all while watching the movies.

As for the Star Wars prequels, I feel they were unnecessary. Everyone knew the gist of what happened before episode IV. It was nice to have it detailed, but the franchise would have been fine without it. Interestingly though, episode VII continues the stormtrooper origins concept that the prequels introduced.

I disagree.  It's like saying, making the Harry Potter movies were unnecessary - everyone knew the gist of what happens in all the movies.

You have to understand that the movies is only a small subset of the entire Star Wars universe.  There are sooooooo much more to Star Wars than just Episodes 4, 5, 6.  Yeah, it would have been great if they made movies out of all of them, but they didn't.  They only made 4, 5, 6 and 1, 2, 3.  Bobba Fett should have his own series, Qui-Gon should have his own series, Obi-Wan should have his, Yoda should have his... etc. etc. etc.  Man, it would have been really awesome if they gave Thrawn his own series!  He doesn't even get a cameo in any of the movies!  There is so much more to those characters you don't even see in a movie and no one outside of the fan base knows about.

Because no one outside the fan base cares about it.  (by definition of the term fan)

Right.  Not all people who love the movies are fans.  So, it's not that they won't like these characters, they just have not been given the opportunity to like these characters.

It's like what Steve Jobs says - they don't know what they like until you give it to them.  Hence, the need for episodes 1, 2, 3 to give you characters like Qui-Gon, Mace Windu, etc. etc.. and a deeper understanding of how Anakin became Darth Vader and how Palpatine became Emperor and why Luke grew up as a moisture farmer on Tattooine while his twin sister is Princess of Alderaan.

Except the Expained Universe has been given to people...  If it hadn't you wouldn't be able to talk about it.  Only fans are interested in it..

It is one thing to say... You don't know that you will like an IPhone because we have not released (it back before it was released clearly) Its entirely another to say the IPhone what was released years ago... You clearly don't know what you are missing because you are still with Android.  The first statement is clearly true, the second is annoying presumption that you don't actually know what you like

That's ridiculous.

The same reason you watched Episode 4, would be the same reason you would watch Episode 1... or Twilight or Batman or James Bond or 10 Things I Hate About You, for that matter.  You want to see a movie, not read a book, watch an animation, read a graphic novel, etc. etc.  You won't know if you like the movie until you go out and see it.

Now, if you bothered to watch Episode 4, 5, or 6... then there's no reason you wouldn't gain anything out of Episode 1, 2, or 3.  Darth Vader is one of the most iconized villain of all times and, surely if you bothered watching Episode 5 after Episode 4 then more than likely you wanted to see more of what happens to the guy.  But you may not be much of a fan that would bother to go find the story in some book.  Hence, Episode 1, 2, 3 is for you.

Star Wars has been out forever...  It is pretty safe to say those who are interested in it... have already followed that interest as far as they care to (barring of course those who were not born at the time and the like)

Therefore it is only annoying fandom that would tell people that they understand what interests them better then the people who have already looked in to it and taken it as far as they wish to.

That, of course, is totally not understanding what I said as a response to Godless' post.  But you can just go ahead and spin around in your own world view.

The reason the first trilogy sucked was because Lucas actually wrote them.  While writing credit is given to him for the middle trilogy, he didn't really write much of it.  He only put together the overall story together.  Others actually made the details and the screenplay.

That is why the fist trilogy sucked.  He was given free reign.

This new movie is bound to be good without Lucas getting into it.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. I said the prequels were unnecessary, not that they were without value. Obviously it's great to have a canonized story behind the original trilogy. I was merely trying to say that the story could have gone straight from IV-VI to VII without any major plot lines being missed. The prequels enriched the existing story, but were not essential to it. That could change with future movies, however, especially with the apparent de-canonization of the Expanded Universe.
