My life improved immensely when I started making the upcoming Sunday lessons (SS and RS) part of my personal scripture study.  At about the same time, I started a schedule in which I read 1-2 talks from the previous General Conference - that allows one to read all of the previous conference before the next one.

When I was called to teach youth Sunday School, I had to adapt my practice (since the different structure didn't give me enough to fill all of my personal scripture study time), and so I've finally mastered the art of flexible personal scripture study.  I still study for the youth Sunday School class, and Relief Society lessons, and still include talks from the previous GC, but now I fill in the remaining time with whatever I choose for myself.  It took me a while to get used to "changing gears" from one day to the next, but it's working quite well for me, and helping me to be more dynamic in my choice of what to study.

When I was a Gospel Doctrine teacher, I tried to get the people in the class to consider changing their personal study to include the chapters for their Sunday lessons, but as far as I know / could tell, it didn't work - those who were prepared (via whatever way), participated and gave great insight / comments in class, everyone else...didn't.  I suppose we each have to progress in our own way and time (and I'm not motivational enough to speed that up for others :) ).

I do wonder if things will change when they finally get the adult classes into the Come, Follow Me format; and once the new Teacher Council meetings get up and running...

Thanks @zil you've inspired me to try that.  Just the little push I needed.

One important point we all should consider when we talk about discussion in a Sunday School class is that we're all there to be edified by the Holy Ghost so our testimony of the gospel and our faith in Jesus Chirst can increase. Section 50 of D&C gives the pattern for such:

17 Verily I say unto you, he that is ordained of me and sent forth to preach the word of truth by the Comforter, in the Spirit of truth, doth he preach it by the Spirit of truth or some other way?

18 And if it be by some other way it is not of God.

19 And again, he that receiveth the word of truth, doth he receive it by the Spirit of truth or some other way?

20 If it be some other way it is not of God.

21 Therefore, why is it that ye cannot understand and know, that he that receiveth the word by the Spirit of truth receiveth it as it is preached by the Spirit of truth?

22 Wherefore, he that preacheth and he that receiveth, understand one another, and both are edified and rejoice together.

So, in a Sunday School class basis, we should be able to discuss the pure doctrine of Christ and the principles to enhance our understanding and knowledge, as well as rejoice together. Why? Because in doing so we will have the companionship of the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of Truth. Otherwise, it is not of God,

I would suggest in light of what you are thinking and providing to this forum that all go back and carefully read and ponder the entire chapter 10 of Moroni in the Book of Mormon.  Keeping in mind that the great prophet charged with providing that final chapter to the scriptural account of the Nephite civilization.  Also that Moroni had finished his work and hidden up the record but then under the direction of the spirit and spared by G-d to return and – chapter 10 which is the very end of Moroni’s important message for which he returned – I believe has a most important message about individual contributions to our day and our congregations of saints as we go about our lives in our communities and meet as saints for our worship and individual contributions to our society of saints.  Though this is thought of as the chapter that provides understand and the means by which a student of the Book of Mormon can come to know the truth of this work as a profound work of scripture – Perhaps there is something even more important – that once one knows the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon – will find – through the spirit and hidden from the world – now brought to light.
