Daniel Posted August 29, 2007 Report Posted August 29, 2007 If you had a choice what to study in institute, what would you want to be studying? Its been awhile since I've been in institute (at least 10 years). What are they teaching now is it the same? I don't remember much but is there a manual online I could look through? You know what I think would be neat is if they did what our old Gospel Doctrine teacher would do. He would give historical background information and theological interpretations of the stuff we were going over in class. It made class pretty enjoyable. Quote
DJSuperBrandt Posted September 1, 2007 Report Posted September 1, 2007 I was reading Bushman's "On the Road with Joseph" where he describes his feelings about JS: RSR, and he says that he thinks the church is going from faith-promoting stories in the CES classes to unbiased teaching. Joseph Smith was a great example. I think that the institute classes sometimes put men up to be exhalted when they were just men with prophetic callings. I donno, I wish they would get a little more in depth and not try to make everyone feel good Quote
Jeny Posted September 7, 2007 Report Posted September 7, 2007 I wish I was young enough for institute!! Quote
Guest Iggy Posted September 7, 2007 Report Posted September 7, 2007 I wish I was young enough for institute!! I thought there was no age restrictions on Institute. Does anyone know first hand? Quote
SMG Posted September 8, 2007 Report Posted September 8, 2007 Institute classes are only for ages 18 to 30. I think that's a rotten deal, because alot of great people I know are OVER 30! Quote

Yeah, like me!! (where is that sparkly grin when you need it?) I begged my Bishop to let me go...no dice, I'm too old!! He won't let me sit in with my daughter at Seminary this year either!! I was 40 when I joined this church...I missed out on all that. Quote
DJSuperBrandt Posted September 8, 2007 Report Posted September 8, 2007 I guess I should enjoy institute while I can right? Actually, there's a lot of people at BYU-Idaho that have their religion classes they go to then on Thursday nights they pack one of the buildings for institute. I had a friend that did that every week and she loved it I guess my big thing with Institute is that (in my mind) it seems like it's a lot of people talking about fluffy things about the scriptures and not getting down to the meat of things. I know that the Institute teachers have to cater their lessons to everyone, but I wish it would get a little more in depth Quote

He is our Stake education specialist (The guy who called me a poster child convert!) He teaches the Institute classes...and I am telling you that if he starts talking about his bunions, I'm taking notes!!!!!...I love that man!! He is amazing!! ...and yes, Elphaba...he IS related to the Bro. Allred that was in the rescue party who rescued the Willy and Martin handcart survivors. Quote

True but depending on your Bishop (who just happens to be our institute instructor), other people could attend. We have had a few people over 30 that attend regularly. Quote
Doctor Steuss Posted September 10, 2007 Report Posted September 10, 2007 If you had a choice what to study in institute, what would you want to be studying? It has been a while since I attended. I just remember that it moved too quickly. One such topic was on how Joseph's understanding of "Zion" evolved as he gained more and more light. We were only able to devote one class to the topic, but it felt like it should have been an entire year... Quote

Guest karlita007 Posted October 2, 2007 Report Posted October 2, 2007 I attend the University of Utah, and since I'm still learning about the Church, I was wondering: Is taking Institute classes a good idea for a newbie like me? I've hardly even been to seminary, would I be lost in Institute classes? Quote

Guest karlita007 Posted October 3, 2007 Report Posted October 3, 2007 I guess I'd better get on the roll so I can have 14 hours done by the time I graduate. ;P Then again, I have ten years before I turn 30... Quote
Pegtagatha Posted October 4, 2007 Report Posted October 4, 2007 I just took it my first course last night. We have this crabby old lady doing it and she treats us like we are little children. She left us all chocolates on our seats when it's a sin in our Faith to have caffine. Quote

Read D&C 89 in its entirety. Really study it out. Does anyone else have links to later talks, etc regarding the Word of Wisdom that Peg can study to give her a better understanding of it?I am running short of time this morning - other wise I would hunt them down for her. Peg - on Sundays do you attend the Gospel Principles class, or the Gospel Doctrine class? As a brand new adult member you should be attending the Principles class. It is to help you to understand and learn the Gospel Principles of the Church. Quote
Guest karlita007 Posted October 4, 2007 Report Posted October 4, 2007 Hmm, I live in Utah and am surrounded by a lot of Mormon friends, neighbors, and peers. And I've never heard any of them say anything about chocolate being forbidden. In fact, my missionary's mom is very active in the Church, and she used to sell (really delicious) fudge for a living. Coffee and tea I hear loads about, even soda to an extent, but... chocolate? Then again, I haven't studied the Word of Wisdom. I'll have to catch up with that for sure. Sorry your teacher is crabby. ;P Maybe she just needs another chance... Quote
Pegtagatha Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 Also I must say she is not good on theology and history, infact very far from it. Quote
Guest karlita007 Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 Maybe that's why she started the class with giving you treats. ;P Any chance for a transfer? She probably isn't that horrible of a teacher, but it does seem like her teaching style may not be compatible with your learning style. Quote

Guest karlita007 Posted October 6, 2007 Report Posted October 6, 2007 But is she the only teacher?I'm sorry Peg, it sounds like you're in a tough situation! Quote
