JohnsonJones Posted August 17, 2023 Report Posted August 17, 2023 I have been gone for several weeks. I come back to the U.S. and see a lot of news stories coming out about the tragedy in Maui. I believe we have quite a number of Saints in Hawaii, but I have heard no news about the Saints in Maui and the fires there. Did we have a ward building or chapel there that was burned, or are the wards doing anything with the Members in the Aftermath. Is there any information or new on the Church and Church members in Maui currently? Quote
scottyg Posted August 17, 2023 Report Posted August 17, 2023 Many miracles taking place there. Here is an awesome picture of one of the church buildings in Laihana. I can't seem to find the zoomed out one, but the fire scorched all of the buildings and cars leading up to the chapel...but stopped right at the property line. Even the trees next to the building didn't get burned down. It is now being used as a shelter and resource center. Pretty cool. JohnsonJones and Backroads 2 Quote
Carborendum Posted August 17, 2023 Report Posted August 17, 2023 (edited) There is only one LDS church in the affected area. And it appears that @scottyg has a picture of it. The burn area seemed to end right around the region of the church. Not much fire north of the church. It doesn't hurt that the fire department is less than 1/2 mi away. We can chalk it up to a miracle. Or we can see accept that the plastic paneling on the fence just south of the church (left side, in the photo from Scotty) was a flame retardant material that saved the building which was made of brick with metal roofing. And the fire department was able to do its job. -- Why can't it be both? Edited August 17, 2023 by Carborendum JohnsonJones 1 Quote
JohnsonJones Posted August 18, 2023 Author Report Posted August 18, 2023 WOW...that is a miracle to me. That sounds wild that the fire burned right up to it, but not the church itself. Quote
