  1. Can anyone remember the books that were in the old sets of the "Missionary reference sets"? Has there only been the 2 difference sets? Current set includes "Our Search for Happiness" by Elder M. Russell Ballard, "Jesus the Christ" by Elder James E. Talmage, "True to the Faith", and "Our Heritage". Seems like there was "A Marvelous Work and Wonder", Articles of Faith", "Jesus the Christ", and what else??? in the old set?
  2. How do you folks interpret this? Please again I'm trying to get caught on the whole thing just trying to learn and understand. James E Talmage, Articles of Faith "Manner of Administering the Sacrament— The plainness of the Lord's instructions to the saints regarding this ordinance leaves no excuse for disputation concerning the proper procedure, for assuredly no one who officiates in these holy rites can feel that he is justified in changing the forms even by the alteration of a word.” Do you take the word "forms" to mean the set prayers themselves? Also one brother brought up that to him the Bread is symbolic of Christ being the “bread of life” and the water being symbolic of the “living water” of Christ and to him it didn’t matter if they were in the islands using banana’s and sprite they are symbolic and the words should not be altered. Any thoughts?
  3. I agree. It was one of those month long trip covering 100 miles or something like that.
  4. I understand your concern. We really shouldn't be in the business of deciding what is correct and what is not and I'm not. I don't spend my days thinking of church policy and being a "proper ordinance nazi" This is a forum where one can come and ask questions concerning the gospel that might arise. As a priesthood bearer I want to try and understand correct principles and the proper way to preform ordinances that's all. I think it's a valid question. :)
  5. Just curious, Does anyone know the churches policy concerning this: If for some crazy reason you had permission from your bishop to hold your own sacrament while on a camping trip or whatever and you realize you don’t have any bread so you replace it with what you have, cheese. Do you change the word “bread” to cheese in the prayer? We had a bishopric member who did have permission and did use cheese and did change the word “cheese” which sparked a conversation about the wording. He admits he made the best decision he felt at the moment but did not know if it was right.
  6. Just listen to a great talk given by Elder Eyring given in 1981 and a CES devotional. Can't find it anywhere on the web. They played it on the churches radio station: Mormon Channel He talked about sticking to the basics. Just as in everything you want to be good at, piano, golf, tennis, painting etc. If you get away from the basics it wont be long and you will start to mess up he says and you will always find yourself going back to the basics. Told about even the greatest pro athletes always stick with the basics and so it is with anything you want to excel in including the gospel. Great talk!
  7. The gospel principle book hasn't changed much since I took the class 32 years ago. I still have my original book and it's pretty much the same with a few exceptions like all worthy males and the priesthood. I must admit that it's been my favorite book other then the Book of Mormon. Another great publication that hasn't changed in oh 32 years I would guess is "Duties and Blessing of the Priesthood manuals 1&2. Love those books. I still have my original copies.
  8. I think he did a pretty good job and in my mind he's like CS Lewis. He had a great desire to write and for the most part at the time it was the only thing of it's kind. Now we have more precise and concise publications like Gospel Principles and the Encyclopedia of Mormonism .
  9. I would agree. From my personal experiences I have come to see how great these men really are. Yes they are only human but when alone with someone and they are guided to share all I have to say is WOW!. I have a long, long ways to go and it's up to me to get there. I think our greatest responsibility is to have the guidance of the HG with us all the time. Plain and simple. IF we can receive this it will be well with us and we will not be lost. I'm not really helping with the question asked about revelation other then to say if you have the HG you will know what's doctrine so seek for the HIS companionship first and the rest will flow. That is what the Apostles have show by example, in private. Powerful stuff.
  10. I thought the first half was slow. It's cool that's he's serving in a leadership position now in his ward with the perspective he has. Godhead, Priesthood, Prophets, Temples, etc. Really cool ending. His message, LOVE.
  11. prisonchaplain has anyone pointed you to this before? Kinda long though. Couldn't help myself. Why I Believe Episode 20 - Programs - Mormon Channel
  12. Hard to read between the lines here. I wonder how many ppl have asked this question? How can something that I suffer with more than any other thing I have encountered be a good thing? I don't think this temptation can be lumped into the "Pride/Selfish" category that most sin falls in. Some have actual differences physically to others. It's not just my own greed to satisfy the natural man.
  13. My rules to my personal fasting on meds: -Half a glass of water and half a slice of whole wheat bread in the morning with my pill and the same for lunch when I take my other pill. -I start my fast about 6pm the night before and end it around 5 that next day. The problem is I'm not as consistent as I should be. So I guess my earlier statement that the reason I struggle is because I must eat is just an excuses and that I abuse the rules that I have setup for myself.
  14. This is an area I need to work on. The spirit is week when it comes to fasting. I've been on pain med's (Lyrica for fibromyalgia) for 13 years now for chronic pain, without them I could not make it and with them I barely do. Always in the clouds. It's a real bummer but I have come to embrace the path I must walk. Anyway fasting really messes me up and I walk around in a daze for days after fasting the full 24 hours but I feel I really need it.
  15. Wow you have defiantly had silence! Good thing you wrote in down for your posterity. :) I would love to read more. You should post it in the blog area. :)
  16. Are you kidding me, 3 days! No water for 3 days can be fatal!
  17. Wow how often I've wanted to try something like that! Thanks for sharing. The times when my witness has been beyond my own expectations it has been alone in the wilderness or alone in the wee hours. It has been years since those experiences, now silence of a difference nature speaks volumes. Not so much FIRE & POWER but a special kind of POWER from PEACE. Kinda the difference between "By the power of God "I can do all things" and "I can do all things" because "I am as calm as a summer's morning."
  18. Yes indeed. I'm coming to see the great value in silence. "Peace be still" speaks volumes. We live in a troubled world with so many distractions in advanced countries around the world who have lost the ability to embrace silence. You might even say we panic when faced with it. Yes Isaiah says that during the millennium the Lord will answer even before we call upon him and while we are yet speaking he will hear. Isaiah Chapter 65:24*. But for now I think much can be said about silence. I love the words to the hymn - Cast Thy Burden upon the Lord. “Cast thy burden upon the Lord, And he shall sustain thee. He never will suffer the righteous to fall. He is at thy right hand. Thy mercy, Lord, is great And far above the heav’ns. Let none be made ashamed That wait upon thee."
  19. What are "we" told to do when someone in need comes to us with a problem? Don't lecture and feel the need to help with words but listen. Father shows us the way and we in turn should do the same for our children and others. - Show love by listening, that's what the Heavens do. :)
  20. Answers to Prayer. I might feel frustrated that the Lord does not speak more often, that I do not hear voices speaking out of silent air or burning bushes. A God who does not speak—a silent God—must not care. I share I thought that came to me today. The Lord's silences are never the silence of indifference. They are the silence of listening! Tonight is my weekly night at the temple. I will sit in the celestial room after my work is done and embrace the silence there and as I talk, Father will listen and every once in a while through the silence will come a comment. Silence is truly golden! Thanks for listening HF!
  21. Oh ok..... I get it. Nope, just possible examples to your original post/question. Not quoted guidelines. I think the PEC "meets regularly to consider priesthood matters" and I gave some possible examples/ideas on what "priesthood matters" are. (Instructions, assignments and accountability). Return and report. I think we can draw our own conclusions to the "return and report" as given in the temple and how it was done by the priesthood. -- IMO it functions the same way in the ward. Priesthood shepherds or the PEC members are called to help our Father in Heavens's children find the way home and give a return and report on our efforts to the common Judge of Israel. Sorry got off base a bit from your original question. :)
  22. Elder Cooks instruction given in the Broadcast. "The priesthood executive committee (PEC) meets regularly to consider priesthood matters but need not consider matters that will be discussed by the ward council. " https://new.lds.org/training/worldwide-leadership/2010/11/selected-principles-from-the-new-handbooks?lang=eng It specifically does not say what I suggested (I stated "examples") I did not say it was "given policy/guidelines". These things however are "priesthood matters" that Elder cook did say is the purpose if PEC. What is your reference we are NOT to hold PEC?
  23. As I have been stating all along. It's to discuss welfare matters. Unemployment etc. Handbook 2: Administering the Church Chapter 6.0 - Welfare Principles and Leadership "As needed, the ward priesthood executive committee discusses confidential welfare matters. The bishop may invite the Relief Society president to attend for these discussions." https://new.lds.org/handbook/handbook-2-administering-the-church/welfare-principles-and-leadership?lang=eng&query=priesthood+executive+committee What's your reference that I'm stand corrected?
  24. The spirit and feeling between PEC and Ward Council is different. Example: Stake High Council - Meets to discuss policy, get assignments, receive training on their duties, receive instructions to take out to the different wards. Also they give an accounting/reporting on how things are going in the wards. Ward Priesthood Executive Meeting - Meets to discuss policy, get assignments, receive training on their duties, receive instructions to take out to the different quorums and group. Also they give an accounting/reporting. It's a priesthood function. The High Council can't just meeting with the Stake Council. I don't see them being able to function with the personal duties they attend too. Same is true with PEC.
