  1. Seems to me, the decision to append "Another Testament of Jesus Christ" to the title of the Book of Mormon (back in 1981) makes everything pretty clear. I'm not sure I see why this thread has gone on so long (he says, as he adds one more post to the thread...)
  2. This article by Royal Skousen gives some info about the RCE (the last section of the article is about how the RCE came to be published): https://www.mormoninterpreter.com/a-brief-history-of-critical-text-work-on-the-book-of-mormon/
  3. Skousen's edition of the BoM is excellent. Grant Hardy's "Reader's Edition" is also quite good. I totally understand the concerns that have been shared about the RCE. I think, if I were LDS, I would be a bit suspicious of this statement in the Introduction of the RCE: "The Restored Covenant Edition...has been prepared because, according to our testimony, the Lord directed us to do it."
  4. I am not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but I have a fairly extensive collection of LDS publications: different editions of the Book of Mormon, Teachings of the Presidents, etc. One of the more unusual editions of the Book of Mormon in my collection is one that I found at a used bookstore: it's called the "Restored Covenant Edition," and it's published by something called the Zarehemla Research Foundation. It's very nicely laid out, it's a "red letter" edition, and it has a concordance in the back. It's clearly not an official Church publication, but it's a pretty nice piece of work anyway. Has anyone seen this publication? If you are interested in reading the Restored Covenant Edition online, here is their website: http://www.restoredcovenant.org/RCE.asp?CAT=RCE Would be interested in an LDS perspective on the edition and/or the website linked above. Peace, Cory
  5. Resting today, trying to get over this nasty bug that has made me feel icky for the past few days...

  6. My family are not members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but I "discovered" Studio C a few years ago, and started showing some videos to my children last year. Now the whole family regularly watches Studio C sketches on YouTube. We weren't crazy about Season 8, but the first 7 seasons have so many hilarious sketches. Hoping for good things from Season 9, as they seem to have realized that they didn't do enough live comedy in Season 8. I will certainly be following what the original cast ends up doing!
  7. I imagine they'll keep the URL of mormon.org the same, so that people seeking information on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can still get where they're going. Incidentally, I just watched the Welcome video on the home page of mormon.org, and noticed the narrator mentions "Mormon chapels." So I suspect the process may take a bit of time to take effect.
  8. Speaking as an outsider, who tries to be as respectful of Church members as I can, it is a tricky situation. For those of us who are not members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it begins to get very difficult to figure out exactly what we're supposed to type on, say, a forum like this one. I have often told people (Saints and non-Saints alike) about the many positive experiences I have had with "Mormons." I hate to feel that I am insulting anyone, when I am trying to be positive! Meanwhile, I am assuming sites such as MormonHub, and mormon.org will not be changing their names any time soon. Or will they? Well, if anyone has any advice on what they would like to be called by me on this forum, I'm open to suggestions...

    Alma 42:30-31

I think you may be correct, that this passage has a unique take on justice, especially connecting it with humility. That being said, I do hear an echo of Micah 6:8... Micah's famous quote certainly links justice and humility, although with a different nuance than the passage from Alma.
  10. Okay, it's time for this head cold to release its grip on me! I need to get healthy, I've got stuff to do...

  11. Right on the tail end of a head cold, still feeling tired. And I have two rehearsals to lead tonight. Guess I gotta dig in, and get it done!

  12. Watching Sen. John McCain's funeral service online. Very touching.

May God watch over his family.

  14. A day off for me and the kids. Sadly, my wife still has to work today!

  15. Hello all, I actually originally joined this forum several years ago, and introduced myself back then, but since I've been a bit more active over the past few days, I thought I'd go ahead and re-introduce myself! I am not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but I have had many positive experiences with Saints in the past, and I have long been interested in LDS culture and history. I have a nice little collection of different editions of the Book of Mormon, and some other LDS scripture, as well as publications such as the Teachings of the Presidents, Gospel Principles, and the like. I am the Director of Music Ministries at a United Methodist church outside of Nashville, TN. I have a wife and two daughters, and am coming up on my 19th wedding anniversary in a couple months. I also collect Bibles, and have somewhere upwards of 200 different Bibles in my collection. I am interested in language, Shakespeare, theology, and Sherlock Holmes. That's me in a nutshell. Blessings, Cory Howell Nashville, TN

    2 Nephi 29:3-11

Thank you all for sharing your perspective. I recently finished reading the Book of Mormon all the way through for the first time. (It took me seven years of off again/on again reading, but I did read it all.) It is a complex, intriguing work, and I find it (and all of LDS History) quite fascinating. I've talked to missionaries a couple times in my life, and although we disagreed on some things, the amount of common ground we shared was more important. We "mainstream" Christians can learn a lot from the Saints about sharing our faith in a kind, respectful manner. Peace be with you!
  17. Thanks! I've popped in from time to time over the past few years, but am not always very regular at checking in.
  18. Feeling more like a nap than going to direct children's handchimes and choir tonight! Need to get a little more jazzed up!

    2 Nephi 29:3-11

I know I'm late to this party, but I'll chime in on this passage anyway. First, I'm not LDS, so my perspective is not "orthodox," from a Mormon point of view. But I will share with you that this passage is one of the things that gets in the way of my accepting the Book of Mormon as actual God-breathed scripture, as I accept the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. As soon as I read this, I thought, "Well, of course, Joseph Smith knew that people would criticize the Book of Mormon, that they would contend that they already had a Bible, and didn't believe in any additions to that Bible. So he put this bit in to cut them off at the pass, so to speak." Please understand, I mean no disrespect. I have had nothing but positive experiences with Latter-day Saints in my life, and I have great respect for their beliefs. I find the Book of Mormon fascinating as religious literature; I just don't believe it was written in ancient times. I would love to hear the LDS perspective on this passage, though. Kindest regards, Cory Howell
  20. If you are interested in studying the Book of Isaiah in great depth, you should check out this resource: Isaiah Explorer. The site offers a ton of excellent resources for studying every single verse of this major Old Testament prophet. It's created by KC Kern, who is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. (KC also has an excellent Book of Mormon site, that is put together really well.) He's added a lot of features to the site, including facsimiles of the Isaiah scroll from the Dead Sea Scrolls. In the interest of full disclosure, I personally am not LDS, but I discovered KC's Book of Mormon site several years ago, as well as the link to his Isaiah site in its earlier form, and he and I have been Facebook friends for quite some time now. The Isaiah site is useful for members of the Church, as well as "mainline" Christians like myself. Blessings, Cory Howell Nashville, TN
  21. After several years of on/off reading, I finally finished the entire Book of Mormon. (I'm not LDS, so that's not as bad an admission as it could be...)

  22. A beautiful day in Nashville, TN! :)

Ha, I see I posted almost the exact same status back in February...just with a different emoji. (I guess I'm feeling happy today, instead of cool.)

  24. @Sunday21 Yes, I introduced myself a few years ago. (I actually had one person accuse me of being an anti-Mormon in disguise, but everyone else was very nice and welcoming!) I pop in from time to time.
