  1. It is a pity how much the media have convinced people there is a problem with GW. Supposedly smart people spout off crud and convince themselves by repeating over and over that the earth is warming up and we have to be the cause of it. Go to junkscience.com. Read Micheal Crighton's State of Fear. Do a little homework and you will see that it is all a crock. It is the last refuge for the communists and those that want to rule people's lives. Were you both aware that there was a period of warming in the 1200s-1300s, during which time they were growing vegetables and other plants in Greenland? And that it was warmer than than it is today? And that the all knowing IPCC has this information but somehow forgot to include in in their latest report where they stated that man is bad (well, USA man is bad, all others are good, because USA man is a self centered jerk that only wants to kill everyone else) and nature/mother earth/the seals are good? Were you aware that we are coming out of a 6000 year period of global warming that has been documented in the ice in Antarctica (which again is not reported in the drive by media)? That temperatures since the 1850s, the supposed start of man's inhumanity to the righteous mother earth, have actually been dropping or the same? That the ice in Antarctica is actually getting thicker, except in one specific place? There is a reason that most of us are skeptical. THERE IS A POLITICAL AGENDA BEHIND THE GW MOVEMENT, AND IT IS TO DESTROY THE US! Get your heads out of the sand. Wake up and smell the postum!
  2. Didn't see that one, but one where they spoofed Rosie. Same thing, I was laughing. South Park has had some of the most original humor, but when they ridiculed the Savior I stopped watching. It was too much for me then. News Flash from the Indoctrination Lesson by AlGore: He invented Carbon! It was right before he and Tipper invented the internet... It's sad to see stupid people. It is even sadder when they open their mouth...
  3. I just want all of you to know that I have been supremely blessed today because the first Secretary of Carbon, the all-knowing, all-inventing AlGore is here in Buffalo today to indoctrinate a bunch of young minds full of mush about the evils of capitalism and how Mother Earth loves them but we are all ungrateful servants to her. Oh, and that while he has a huge mansion that spends more money in carbon fuels than I will in 10 years, he has bought some trees to offset his usage. Isn't that something about the rich having what they want while the poor suffer? How does AlGore reconciliate the apparent contradiction? Oh, that's right. He wants US to change. He doesn't have to because he cares more than we do...
  4. JC, Yeah, that is why I am leaning more and more towards them: agency to do as we wish, as long as we don't hurt others. However, I wonder how far that goes? For instance, gambling is a personal issue. True, it impacts families, but should the gov't restrict it (not that they do so much anymore)? And the Church came down hard on the side of not allowing gambling in the State of Utah, if I remember right. Same with drug use. If it was safe and legal, would gangs suddenly dry up, which is the arguement. And drug use really only hurts the idiot that takes them, right (other than family and friends, but they don't feel the affects, or have the physical problems that are associated with the drug)? Same with prostitution. I personally wouldn't do it, but in most cases, it is between consenting adults, and therefore not really any one else's business (again, except for family members, particularly spouses). I guess I ask because sometimes I think that while gov't should be limited, they still have to come down on moral issues, which restricts freedom in a way (you can do it, but there are legal consequences if you are caught). But who determines morality? I think that is where the "Zeezrom's" of the modern world ply their trade of bait and switch, and playing on emotions, rhetoric, etc., to get these evils legalized. And then they try to take more and more. If this country would follow the God of this Land, and his commandments, my feeling is that gov't would be limited and non-intrusive. But since we aren't, we are reaping the promises (or curses) that HF promised in the BOM. Thoughts??
  5. JC, I know, I know, and that is why I will still vote Repub next election for the major orifices, just because I don't want Nancy, Harry or Hillary the opportunity to run completely unopposed, not that they will get much opposition. I'm tired of the Repubs not standing up for what their base wants. It is almost like they just want to be liked. Kind of like the Dimmocrats thinking that if we were just nice to the Islamofascists they'd like us... I vote Libertarian in the local elections, and hope that someday they will gain more power. Don't agree with everything they stand for, but they are closer to my beliefs in limited gov't and personal freedom than the two major parties.
  6. Didn't see it. I'm wondering, though, if anyone saw Hillary give Obama the "look" (ala Robert DeNiro to Ben Stiller in "Meet the Parents" when he wanted him to know he was watching him). All I can say is the Obama better be sure that he has food tasters, brake testers, and plane testers if he doesn't want to get "Vince Fostered"! I'm fed up with all of them, Dems and Repubs. If the Repubs would grow some backbone, I MIGHT come back. Until then, I vote Libertarian...
  7. Another incidence of the gov't telling you what you can and can't do, and for what? The whole GW thing is a crock of that one stuff, and people jump on that bandwagon like a bunch of sheep. Check out JunkScience.com and you may be surprised to learn that there are actually FACTS proving this is all a bunch of hooey dreamt up by people with nothing better to do than tell you how many squares of TP to use (and have the gov't enforce it besides!). That will end my days of shaking hands with anyone!
  8. She's an idiot. Period. She has been seduced into thinking that because she was once part of the "Oprafication" of this country, and therefore had a bunch of housewives that liked her that her extreme views would be welcomed on this piece of garbage show. I believe she is a truly unhappy person, caused mainly by her lifestyle choices, and her only way of assuaging her guilt and proving that she is of worth is by yapping about how Bush lied and soldiers died, that he planned 9/11, that gays are completely discriminated against, that the earth is warming because of Bush, etc., etc., etc. She's an idiot. But then again, so are 99% of those in the "entertainment" industry. My dad put it best: these people are basically paid to read someone else's ideas/thoughts, or sing them, and because we appreciate that talent, they believe that we want to know what they think of other things. As Laura Ingraham said in her best seller: "Shut up and Sing!" (or Act!)
  9. Sorry, GB, but I have to disagree with you on that. There is example after example of people doing the "feel good" thing and making it harder for law abiding citizens to get weapons and then the criminals get them. Do we really think that if the gun sales were restricted or outlawed that it would solve the problem? No way. If the criminals KNOW that I don't have a weapon, then nothing will stop them. If they wonder, though... Peace thru strength. Or uncertainty. Or deception. Any will work for me...
  10. Last night I was watching "Secrets of the Dead" on PBS and it was about the Bible and those that translated it and made it available to the general public. They particularly told the story of William Tindale, and the persecution he faced all because he wanted to translate the bible from the original Greek, Latin, etc., to common English. It was fascinating and I was filled with gratitude to this man, and others like Martin Luther, John Wycliffe, etc., for their courage and at times life sacrifice so that I could have this wonderful canon of scripture. That being said, I also believe that a lot of the plain and precious truths have been lost from the Bible, some because of translating error (I speak another language, and sometimes you just can't translate the entire feeling of a word into English or vice versa) and some, I believe, by calculating translators because it didn't fit into what they felt the gospel should be so they omitted it or changed it (kind of the "drive by media" of the ancient world!). That is why I really appreciate the BOM, the D&C, the P of GP and the Joseph Smith translation because it fills in those gaps, and in my opinion supports the Bible. I know that there are a lot of churches that believe we don't believe in the Bible (I was in the Bible Belt for many years, and that was thrown at me because I had my "Golden Bible"), but in my opinion, we LDS are the among the biggest believers in the Bible that there are, because we believe its message of God's love for us and his providing us a way out of eternal misery.
  11. Chanteemom,You are a woman of tremendous courage! I was YM Pres for a couple of years, as well as SS teacher for one year, and I was ALWAYS glad to get home! My wife and I have 3 daughters, and I have never once regretted not having any sons. I saw what they did to other people's houses! Don't get me wrong. I loved the YM. I needed the pure testosterone submersion from time to time, but it was a lot like grandkids: when I'm tired of you, I'll go home or send you home! You deserve a week off, at a spa or something really girly...
  12. You may want to try to get a hold of some of the LDS scriptures that have the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible in them so that you can see where we get that idea. Yes, we use the KJV of the Bible, but the Joseph Smith Translation fills in a lot of blanks. I'm sure your girlfriend has a copy of that that you can read thru...
  13. I don't know what to think of the whole issue. The supposed benefits are magnificent, but the whole premise of using a "garbage" embryo (which is really what they are, if you think bluntly) bothers me. I don't see a whole lot of difference in using them or using a freshly aborted embryo/fetus for the study. I can see why maybe the thought process behind using something that is going to be destroyed anyway, but I see that as an end around on the current restrictions. I think we are crossing another line here from which there is no return (legalizing abortion was the first big step), and I don't know that we have thought the ramifications thru thoroughly...
  14. I like the site, but wouldn't necessarily want it to add to my spirituality. To me this is the ultimate Elder's quorum discussion where we can discuss some of the things that we can't in EQ or HP meeting because it really has nothing to do with our salvation. But I want to discuss them and learn from others. Also, I like it because it isn't like the other sites I've been to that were supposedly LDS but were really sites where those not so friendly to the church would come and ridicule, etc. I like that there are other of other faiths that come here and want to learn, not necessarily to join but just to gain knowledge of other's beliefs. I really liked PrisonChaplain's last line that he had learned more of our religion from this site than he would from Walter Martin or the GodMakers. I don't have a problem with people disagreeing with us and our beliefs--Joseph Smith himself said that if he hadn't personally experienced what he did he too would find it hard to believe. But when they resort to calling you delusional and stupid or just plain evil it gets to be a little much. So thanks for having a website where we can discuss the gospel in a spirit of wanting to learn and share rather than feel like we are under fire for our beliefs.
  15. Yeah, after I sent that I kind of knew that I'd phrased that wrong. I have no fears of law abiding cops coming into my house, but I guess I'm more along the lines of what happened in Nazi Germany when they took the guns and then the Gestapo and the SS and others could come in with impunity for whatever reason. I wasn't taking potshots at the police (except those that sit in speed traps!), but rather that as guns are taken away then the gov't will not have anything to stop them from doing what they want. And I hope that none of us are naive enough to believe that what happened in Germany couldn't happen to us. It is just a matter of time with the PC crowd out there...
  16. Wait. What? You would use a weapon against the government/cop? Yes, I would. Now, I'm not advocating armed violence or rebellion, but like I said, the only reason the cops and gov't don't trample on our freedoms more than they do now is because they are not sure what is or isn't in my home, and unless they have just cause they really don't want to find out. The 2nd amendment had two reasons: one was to protect the land against armed invasion, and a civilian militia was one way of doing it. The other reason was to keep gov't from overreaching their authority and doing exactlywhat had happened to the colonists prior to the revolutionary war, which was to be subject to the whims of gov't. Remember Missouri and what happened to the Saints there. They wanted to fight but instead gave up their weapons. And then, who had the weapons? The mob didn't really start the hard core persecution until after the guns were gone. Then, who or what was to stop them? I don't carry. I am thinking about getting a permit, just because of the crud that is happening all around. But the absolute naivete that exists about guns and how dangerous they are is alarming. Neal Boortz, a talk radio host in the Atlanta area, related a story that happened in Florida. Apparently someone went into a 7-11 and stuck a knife at the attendant's throat and said give me your money or you die. Luckily for her, a woman had a gun in her purse (a .38? I think, with a permit) and pulled it out and basically said drop the knife or I'll drop you. Since you don't bring a knife to a gun fight, the guy dropped the knife, and was arrested later. Here is the appalling part: the news showed up and talked about what had happened, and they got some soccer mommy lollipops and roses idiot in front of the mike. The first words out of her mouth? "Thank heavens someone stopped this?" OH NO! The first words out of this idiot's mouth was "I can't believe that someone in this day and age walks around with a gun in her purse!" Never mind that quite possibly she just saved this woman's life, since if the perp made good on his threat he isn't going to leave witnesses, no, no, the woman with the GUN is the bad guy here. Our society is messed up, and the libs and their sheep are the ones doing it (libs can be Republicans too, so don't shoot at me for saying things about certain political parties! )
  17. Yes, A train and JC. If ONE person in that classroom had been packing, there would have been much less carnage. And if VT hadn't done the PC thing and declared themselves GUN FREE, then maybe that disturbed individual would have thought twice about shooting things up. If he even thought that there may be a chance for someone to kill him before he could become infamous forever, he might have thought twice about it. We need to get over our crazy fear of guns. My having weapons is the only thing keeping the gov't out of my house and hauling me off to jail for whatever reason. Or even the idea that MAYBE I have weapons keeps them at bay. That is why the 2nd amendment is so important. It keeps gov't at bay.
  18. Mamacat, Your faith in the MP is amazing. I have been a member for most of my life, and have just recently understood the power of the priesthood when used as it was intended, i.e., to bless the lives of others. I believe that most men in the church that hold the MP don't have the same testimony that you do, that it really is the power of our HF to be used in the service of his children, or if they do, it is someone else that has that ability and not really them. I had an opportunity to give a blessing one time to a woman that was married to a non member, and therefore didn't hold the priesthood, relating to some health issues. She told me her concerns and as I started to give the blessing I stumbled around with the usual "HF loves you, he is mindful of you, etc." when I stopped and had the clearest thought of D&C 46, which stated that some had the faith to be healed. And then the next thought was "if she has faith to be healed, then heal her!", so I then proceeded and rebuked the disease and pronounced her whole. Needless to say, I was scared to death! What have I done!?, I thought. I didn't ask her about it for a couple of weeks and in fact, it wasn't until my next HT visit that she brought it up, and told me that she had gone home, still with the pain, and wondered to about it, when she felt a "pop" and the pain was gone. When she went to the doctor the next day they couldn't find anything either. That really taught me that our HF wants us to use the PH to bless others. Now, we aren't to go marching off healing everyone, because there are consequences to that as well, but when the spirit tells you to do something, you better do it! So you are way ahead of the game in this instance, knowing of the power of the PH.
  19. Love history. Love it love it love it. All sorts of history, church, world, US, anything. I have, over the last couple of years, been fascinated by the Revolutionary War and the men that made that happen. I felt drawn to them because they were working God's will and accomplished so much even though they all have their share of pain, problems and sins. But what great men they were!! My kids even get me the thick books now to read (which I do voraciously, in between showings of "24" and "Lost" and "CSI"!!) about the Revolutionary War or biographies about those men, etc., every Christmas, B-Day, Father's Day, etc. FWIW...
  20. Thanks JC, you're right. I have always thought of those two commandments as actually one: one (1) deals with the heart and the other (2) with the physical manifestation of the apostasy.
  21. My nephew, who is currently on his mission in the Oakland area, recently asked the same thing. My favorites are: 2nd Nephi 4 Alma 5 Moroni 7 Yes, the whole chapters...
  22. Remember that the culture at the time was one of worshipping the imaginary gods of men, things that were then made of stone, or wood, etc. Another huge part of this false god worship was the altars and groves, which were rank with prostitution, or even the cruelty of Baal, where they burned infants on the molten altar. Now, are we any different today? I think not. I know of people that worship mother earth (the tree huggers and other lunatics), those that worship their bodies to the point that the take nutrition and working out to an extreme, those that worship their cars, or their boats, or their jobs (sacrifice all at the altar of a promotion or career). That to me is having no other gods before our HF. Nothing comes between us and him in our devotion and love.
  23. I sent all three of my girls to BYU. There really was no other alternative for them, in my mind. I graduated from there a long time ago, and my wife and I told them from the time they were embryos that they would go to college, and that their first choice was BYU. My oldest graduated from BYU-I last year with her husband, and my youngest two are at BYU Provo now. They went there for the education, but I also sent them there to find a husband. I have been around other schools with SA programs and institute, and they are fine and all that, but in my mind I wanted them around as many poor returned missionaries as possible. Just my opinion, and my girls seem very happy to be there. If they had chosen another school we would have done something to help them out, but their first choice was the Y. BTW, my son-in-law is considering getting his graduate degree from that apostate school to the north of Provo. I told him I'd disown him.
  24. After the last post by Shanstress, I have to add this. Several years ago I was taking a new job and had to do a pre-employment physical. One part of that for guys is...well, you know. So the doctor asks me to drop my drawers so that he can examine me and I said something like, "man, I always hate this part" to which he replied "if you liked it, I'd be worried!" Made the experience a little less stressful. BTW, I kept him as my personal physician after that because of his sense of humor...
