I can finally claim my Adulting badge
askandanswer replied to Backroads's topic in General Discussion
Congratulations Backroads. No need to rest on your laurels though, its time to quickly move on to the next big thing like using the trimmer/edger/whipper snipper to trim the edges. Sadly, I have to report that the minimum requirement to claim an adulthood badge involves two lawn mows, to prove that the first wasn't an accident, raking up any loose grass, refilling the fuel, checking the oil, and cleaning the mower afterwards. -
Where do I stand? Next to the clothes line while hanging clothes. Its the most convenient place to stand while hanging clothes, because proximity to the line is important. The clothes get to sit in a basket on a chair so I don't have to bend down to the ground every time I reach for another item to hang.

My wife and kids returned from two weeks in the US yesterday. As she has in the past, she commented, with surprise, on the abundant use of dryers vs minimal use of clothes lines. Pretty much every stand-alone house here would have a clothes line, but not all town houses would, and pretty much all of them would be regularly used, except by the elderly and in-firm. The clothes that are on the line now (Tuesday night) have been there since Saturday night. I don't do laundry on Sunday, Monday I was busy, and today it rained so the clothes are wetter now than when I hung them out. Its not a problem because I have plenty of other clothes to wear. If it does become a problem, that's when I'll put them in the dryer.

"concerning this earth during the seven thousand years of its continuance, or its temporal existence." Does the seven thousand years refer to both "its continuance" and "Its temporal existence, and are the phrases "its continuance" and "temporal existence" referring to the same thing, or two different things? Is the earth's continuance the same as, or different from, its temporal existence?

I think if the above is the case, it would be quite analogous to Doctrine and Covenants 20:1 - a scriptural statement giving a timeframe based on the common understanding of the time. However, what might be a significant difference is that in Doctrine and Covenants 77:6 it more clearly seems to be a case of the Prophet speaking, as a Prophet, on specific, doctrinal questions. Additionally, the heading to the section states that "in connection with the translation of the Scriptures, I received the following explanation of the Revelation of St. John."
-
I would agree that its probably been around 7000 years since Adam fell but I can't see the evidence suggesting that this is what the scripture is referring to or means
-
I recall that there have been several discussions on this forum about the age of the earth, with the conclusion seeming to be that the Church has no official position on this question. That being the case, what are we to understand by Doctrine and Covenants 77:6 in which Joseph Smith spoke of the "this earth during the seven thousand years of its continuance."

Crisis of Faith - Dear John Letters
askandanswer replied to Lostboy289's topic in Marriage and Relationship Advice
I've only read the first two pages of this post so what I say here might have already been said. I think that everytime someone makes a better choice they should be congratulated, not condemned, even if making a better choice means overturning a previous choice that might have simply been just good. This is how we grow. I also can't help thinking of all the Latter-Day Saints who were once formally committed Catholics, Episcopalians, etc. -
Looks to me like this topic was a case of much ado about nothing. Or maybe even a tale told by (a possibly unwise person) full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

I’m not trying to make any particular point here on one side or the other and I’ve only read the first three pages of this discussion. I’m just mentioning a few scriptures that it might be interesting to think about. On the side of the YW leaders we have 7 Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. 18 When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. 19 Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul. 20 Again, When a righteous man doth turn from his righteousness, and commit iniquity, and I lay a stumblingblock before him, he shall die: because thou hast not given him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he hath done shall not be remembered; but his blood will I require at thine hand. 21 Nevertheless if thou warn the righteous man, that the righteous sin not, and he doth not sin, he shall surely live, because he is warned; also thou hast delivered thy soul. and What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same. And 88 And if thy brother or sister offend thee, thou shalt take him or her between him or her and thee alone; and if he or she confess thou shalt be reconciled. 89 And if he or she confess not thou shalt deliver him or her up unto the church, not to the members, but to the elders. And it shall be done in a meeting, and that not before the world. 90 And if thy brother or sister offend many, he or she shall be chastened before many. 91 And if any one offend openly, he or she shall be rebuked openly, that he or she may be ashamed. And if he or she confess not, he or she shall be delivered up unto the law of God. 92 If any shall offend in secret, he or she shall be rebuked in secret, that he or she may have opportunity to confess in secret to him or her whom he or she has offended, and to God, that the church may not speak reproachfully of him or her. 93 And thus shall ye conduct in all things. And on the side of the parents we have And again, inasmuch as parents have children in Zion, or in any of her stakes which are organized, that teach them not to understand the doctrine of repentance, faith in Christ the Son of the living God, and of baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of the hands, when eight years old, the sin be upon the heads of the parents. 26 For this shall be a law unto the inhabitants of Zion, or in any of her stakes which are organized. 27 And their children shall be baptized for the remission of their sins when eight years old, and receive the laying on of the hands. 28 And they (the parents) shall also teach their children to pray, and to walk uprightly before the Lord. 40 But I have commanded you to bring up your children in light and truth. (The commandment is to the parents) Of course these verses are not definitive in preferring one course of action over another, nor are they completely analogous but I think they might be worth thinking about when trying to decide the rightness or wrongness of what happened.

I wonder if many other people noticed what could be a spelling error in this article, or perhaps it was accurately reported, but the person who said it may have been mistaken. The article says "People have said he's perpetrating rape culture," Yim said. "People have called for him to be removed from office and sanctioned for his conduct." Vocabulary.com says Be careful not to confuse perpetuate with perpetrate. Although they differ in spelling by only one letter, they differ greatly in meaning. If you perpetuate something, you help it last. Perpetrate, on the other hand, means to commit a criminal act. Needless to say, you wouldn't want to perpetuate the acts of perpetrators! https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/perpetuate

When you've been getting it as long as I have, you hardly notice it any more.

41 No power or influence can or ought to be maintained by virtue of the priesthood, only by persuasion, by long-suffering, by gentleness and meekness, and by love unfeigned; 42 By kindness, and pure knowledge, which shall greatly enlarge the soul without hypocrisy, and without guile— I suspect that I have never properly understood the above verses. It seems to me that the power and influence of a priesthood leader is maintained primarily, or solely because of the Priesthood. By what power is a bishop or Stake President sustained and maintained in their office, and enabled to exercise any power or influence at all other than by the power of the Priesthood? And if some other power is involved, such as that which comes from persuasion, long-suffering, gentleness, love, etc, do these things contribute as much to a bishop’s power and influence as much as does his priesthood power?

I thought I could propose to make a covenant with the Lord anytime I wanted to. Is this not correct? It's not always certain that the Lord will accept it, but I thought the option to propose is always there.

I was thinking along the lines that both are true. For sure, everyone will die, but for sure, everyone will also be resurrected and the essential components which define you and make you what you are will survive. I just thought it was odd that two completely opposite statements, differing by only one word, could both be true.

If you're finding it hard, there must be something wrong with you. I don't find it to be hard at all,

Every year, in the Saturday afternoon session of Conference, we hear the statistical report, during which we are told the number of missionaries currently serving and the number of baptisms in the previous year, both new converts and children of record. While listening to President Eyring’s Saturday morning address, it occurred to me that it would be interesting to hear some statistical information about temple ordinances eg: number of baptisms, confirmations, endowments and sealings in the previous year. Is anybody else interested in hearing this information? Is it already publicly available somewhere? Does the Family History Department have a suggestion box that I could send this suggestion to?

Below are two statements that seem to be opposite in meaning to each other. 1. 1. No one will survive mortality 2. 2. Everyone will survive mortality Which one is true? Are they both true? Are they really opposite in meaning? I don’t think the answer will have any theological significance, but I found this to be an interesting thought to play around with earlier this morning
