  1. Unfortunately, there were reports that he was heading down the same rabbit hole Alice Cooper went down in the 1970s. The original plan was for him to be Vincent Furnier in real life and Alice Cooper on-stage, but his sudden rise to fame and his growing alcohol problem meant that things got blurry even for him. He tried to clean up at one point (one of his albums was a giant metaphor for him saying that he'd have to leave for a while to seek treatment), but by the end of the decade he had relapsed so hard that he *literally* does not remember recording the four albums he did in the early 1980s. In fact, Cooper has reportedly said that "DaDa" - the last album he did with Warner Brothers - scares him because even he can't figure out what it's all about.
  2. 2003? Aerosmith was still getting a boost from their movie soundtrack work, helping to make them a big name again. KISS, meanwhile, was having issues. The "classic" line-up of Gene, Paul, Peter, and Ace had reunited for a world tour, but Peter and Ace were so devastated from years of substance abuse that they were barely holding it together. Ace in particular was so far gone that Black N Blue guitarist Tommy Thayer (who had once been in a famous KISS cover group known as Cold Gin) had to teach Ace all of his old parts just so he could even play live. Gene and Paul were so frustrated and worn out from dealing with Peter and Ace that they had originally been looking to wind things up. Instead, the pair made the decision to jettison the dead weight - that is, Peter and Ace. Former drummer Eric Singer (drummer #3, taking over after Eric Carr died of cancer) came back to the group, but both Mark St. John (guitarist #3) and Bruce Kulick (guitarist #4) were busy with their current bands; with nobody willing to trust Vinnie Vincent (guitarist #2) after his brief stints in the group, Gene, Paul, and Eric decided to offer Tommy the job. 2003 would have been about the time the world was having to adjust to the line-up being Gene. Paul, Eric, and Tommy and the line-up was having to adjust to being a coherent and cohesive unit. Interestingly enough, Aerosmith is playing it cool right now while KISS is back on top. The group even co-starred in a Scooby Doo feature-length animated number last year - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scooby-Doo!_and_Kiss%3A_Rock_and_Roll_Mystery .
  3. When I was getting my MBA, I had to read a book about the rise of the "Harry Potter" franchise and how it became such a financial behemoth during its heyday. So yes, the "Harry Potter" franchise is, indeed, already being studied academically.
  4. Saw the latest "Turtles" movie this past Friday.
  5. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/may/16/black-lives-matter-activists-destroy-blue-lives-ma/ Black Lives Matter destroyed a Blue Lives Matter shrine up at Dartmouth and then followed it up by either defacing or replacing with propaganda all posters on campus. Oy.
  6. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/05/04/white-waitress-abused-by-rhodes-must-fall-activist-to-use-donati/ A black student activist boasted online about how he reduced a white waitress to tears by leaving her a political message instead of a tip. People from his home country responded by calling him out for his hypocrisy (he's attending school on a scholarship set up by the person whose statue he wants removed) and raising enough money for the waitress to put together a down payment for a house that's closer to her terminally ill mother.
  7. Ratchet & Clank This one went in under the radar, with only dedicated sites like Box Office Mojo noting that it's coming out. It's got some intense moments since it's an action number, but at its core it's a kid-friendly slapstick number. You don't even need to be familiar with the games to get into it.
  8. What not many people realize is that Al is, in fact, what society would consider to be a genius. Al graduated valedictorian... at the age of 16. His math scores were so high that his counselors recommended he major in a field related to math, and so he chose architecture. He went to a very reputable college, and paid his way through in part by working at the campus radio station. It was here that he earned the "Weird" nickname for his on-air antics, and he recorded his first official single - "My Bologna" - in the men's room because he liked the acoustics the tile gave off. This is on top of the fact that Al's first song, "Belvedere Cruising", was actually being played on the radio before he even got to high school. Dr. Demento received a copy of the song and loved it so much he put it into the rotation. This gave Al vital exposure he was able to capitalize on during the first part of his recording career (he did get his bachelor's degree, but chose music instead), and in exchange Al would allow Dr. Demento to cameo in most of his early music videos and other media ventures.
  9. The description says that this trip covered 50+ meters of track. I see no evidence of it being edited in any fashion, and so I am inclined to believe it.
  10. As a reviewer, if a Hanks film is the only number playing that week I'll see it and give it a fair review. As a person, I have no desire to ever see another Hanks project in my life. What's more, there's a part of me that would love to one day come into possession of the broadcast rights for "Bosom Buddies" so that I could broadcast it every day of the week just to spite him.
  11. Yes, a heavy metal band covering a "My Little Pony" song.
  12. I would imagine that any lawyer with sense will be in line to take his case given how landmark it will likely be and how obvious a win it is.
  13. If I had a radio show, this would be how I started the Friday night episode: And as a bonus, some classic prog metal:
  14. It seems like once a person enters the link to a YouTube video into a post, it's there forever even if they don't hit the submit button. I tried to drop some YouTube videos into a post as part of the "music interests" thread, only to realize that the album artwork in the video, when magnified to the extent that the board magnifies images, shows something that's against the RoC. I've tried several times to delete the video out of the post, but to no avail. It's still sitting there in the field for creating new posts. If it was just the raw link, I could probably have deleted it by now. Instead, the post field automatically converts the link to an embedded video, and nothing I do will remove it. I can highlight it, but the delete key does nothing and the backspace key actually moves me back through to the previous page. Is there any way to purge things? Thanks.
  15. Spoilers: With me, my big issue with the latest "Jungle Book" film was that they essentially reduced Kaa to a plot point. The early advertising played up just how big a deal Kaa was going to be, especially since they got a big-name voice for the job. They could have gotten away with a smaller name for what they did.
  16. Just watched the most recent live-action Jungle Book.
  17. The issue is that the child is not being sufficiently challenged. The material is well below her level, and so she's bored out of her skull. If AP classes are available, then the girl needs to get in them as quickly as possible. If not, then see if there's any sort of dual enrollment plan in place wherein the girl can take college courses for both high school *and* college credit. Otherwise, it's home-schooling or private school. Either way, her parents will need to come up with things on their own time to help keep her interested and learning on her time.
  18. A few years ago, my parents were the ward mission leaders of their ward. My dad had recently retired from a career in the military, where he worked for 30 years and rose to the rank of command sergeant major. His second-to-last posting (before coming back here to Ft. Hood) was at Ft. Jackson, where he was the sergeant major over one of the basic training units. An officer he had served under had been sent there, and he had pulled my dad's file to come with him. As part of his job as ward mission leader, my dad was required to meet with each new set of missionaries as they came in. One night, this meant meeting with a new elder. Said elder saw my dad and turned deathly pale. It took a while for us to finally get him to talk, at which point we got the full story. The elder had delayed going on his mission so that he could do a stint in the Army. As part of it, he did his basic training... at Ft. Jackson. He remembered my dad from his time there, and apparently my dad left quite the lasting impression on him.
  19. "Hardcore Henry" The promotional materials made it clear that this was nothing more than an ultra-violent first-person action film with just enough plot to stitch it all together, so anyone who watched it for anything *but* the carnage has some explaining to do.
  20. Yeah; if you can prove that you're an adult and you have your ratings set just so, then you can have your avatar go "50 Shades" on someone or have someone go "50 Shades" on you. About a decade back I was looking up something for other and found where someone took a character from a popular fiction series, used that as the basis for their Second Life avatar, and then took screen caps of their avatar having things done to them. That's why I was very surprised when I learned that some businesses were looking to use Second Life as a source of virtual meeting rooms for people who were scattered geographically.
  21. Not sure which thread to stick it in, so here goes. Universal Press Syndicate maintains a website known as Comics.com. You've got your current syndicated strips, your "classic" strips (which are still popular but no longer being syndicated), your political cartoons, and your Spanish-language strips. But they've also got a part of the site known as "Comics Sherpa", which is where unsigned cartoonists can display their works in the hopes of getting signed at a later date. Among these is a self-titled bit by someone named Aaron Guile - http://www.gocomics.com/aaron-guile Most of the strips I've seen so far have been caricatures of famous people, but then we get to today's strip: http://www.gocomics.com/aaron-guile/2016/04/04 Not only is he looking to discuss a number of current issues in regards to religion, he's also bringing the church into it. Might be worth keeping an eye on.
