Original Book Of Mormon
Blossom76 replied to Blossom76's topic in Learn about The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints
I have been too busy defending myself and my husband from all the HORRIBLE INSULTING and UNACCEPTABLE things people have said to me to have had the time to go through a thread full of hateful accusations and personal attacks looking for answers to my question. Perhaps if would have gone differently if people had just offered actual information to help instead of comment such as "Tell me, Senator, have you stopped beating your wife?" to which I will reply "I'm not sure, have you stopped being a condescending jerk" -

I don't know but you certainly don't leave it out of something the church promotes as historically accurate -

I don't know, but I can tell you that when I ask a question in a forum that is here for the purpose of 'learning about the mormon church' and I get attacked, told I'm married to a manipulative bully and that basically I don't have enough faith to 'understand' I can tell you I'm starting to regret learning about this faith at all. (not all of these things have been said about my husband and myself in this thread, but they are in others) At the end of the day NOTHING I have said or asked has been out of malice or bad intention. Also NOTHING I have said is untrue either, the response I have gotten from some of the members on this forum is utterly disgusting. -

The video showed Joseph Smith throughout his life with ONE wife, that is my issue, its inaccurate, and the Church would know that it's inaccurate and yet it still promotes it as a truth. -

THANK YOU @MormonGator! I appreciate you saying so. I don't understand why it is so hard for other members on this site (who shall remain nameless!) to see that this would naturally bother me -

It's the 1837 Kirkland edition that my husband got, he wanted to read the closest to the original as possible, he got it from the Community of Christ church. I didn't think there was going to be an issue with it, turns out I was wrong about that! -

The point is I have an issue with the fact that this movie is promoted by the church as a true historical account of the events that occurred between 1805 and 1845 and makes absolutely no mention of polygamy. Its purposefully inaccurate and it raises doubts and creates trust issues. -

Joseph Smith: The Prophet of the Restoration This is the movie I am talking about, not to be confused with another 20 minute movie called 'The Restoration' -

Thank you, and just to be clear, I have no issue with polygamy being part of the history of the LDS church. I do however have an issue with an LDS movie just 'not including' any of Joseph's other wives in a movie that covers the timeline of his life, it is deceptive and I can understand how the women in my ward don't know Joseph Smith was a polygamist (they were quite upset by the idea too I might add). They don't have to explain polygamy in the movie, but at least ONE of Joseph's other wives should have been included in that movie, they were a part of his life after all. This movie and others like it are the movies that missionaries ask investigators to watch, these are the movies women in my ward show their children. Yes the church is open about polygamy IF you ask, IF you go looking for it. If you don't, you can live your whole life and never know. I'm just not comfortable with that. I don't think it's right, and had you seen the looks on the faces of the women at my ward I'm sure you would agree with me. And these were life long members too, they looked at me like I was the devil himself. I felt awful. At Church we (just the women in Relief Society) were discussing the political push for same sex marriage in Australia and one of the women brought up the fact that it would open the door for other 'disgusting' marriage practices like polygamy, I just stood up for Joseph Smith and said 'how can you think its disgusting when the prophet himself lived plural marriage' didn't go down well at all. -

Actually when I first started going to the ward I am now I quickly discovered that the majority of the women there had no idea Joseph Smith was a polygamist, they all thought it was something Brigham Young started. So I watch what I say at LDS church now so I don't offend anyone. That is why I ask questions here. And I am not 'making accusations' I am asking questions - but I am allowed to have an opinion on things I find disturbing. -

Please believe me I mean no offence when I say this (you are one of the nicest people on this forum) but that movie is an LDS movie and the first screen is a timeline that says 'The historical events represented in this story are true and occurred on the American Frontier from 1805 to 1845' Joseph Smith died in 1844, so he was married to other women and this movie doesn't show that, to someone watching this movie it appears that Joseph Smith was not a polygamist. I find that deceptive - because it is. Polygamy was ordered by God, there is no reason to hide it in the movie. -

Thank you for saying so, I appreciate it. I think church history is important, my current faith has a very questionable at times history, (and it is encouraged strongly to study it), but that doesn't mean the people belonging to it now are responsible for that history, or have to be ok with that history, its just fact, and I don't think ignoring facts is ever a good idea. And how can church history cause someones faith to crumble into dust? I do find it very disturbing that the average active member is unlikely to know of these types of things, this is why I intent to study for 18 months, I don't want to get baptised, give 10% of my income and a lot of my time to a faith only to find out something in a few years time that can threaten my relationship with God and Jesus. Speaking of history one thing I am having a very hard time getting my head around is the way Joseph Smith is portrayed in LDS movies like 'The Restoration' - Great movie and I really liked it a lot but Joseph only had one wife in that movie and we all know that's not true. How can the church say its not hiding anything and not show the truth in that movie and others like it, it is portraying to anyone watching that movie that polygamy didn't exist in LDS history, and we all know it did. Its deceptive and raises concerns (what else is being hidden by deception?) -

I was raised very catholic, I'm used to being persecuted for my faith, I would never treat anyone the way I have been treated for asking questions about the catholic church. It's unacceptable and there is no excuse for it. I am sincerely wanting to know if the Book of Mormon is true, I am devoting a lot of my time to studying this faith, as is my husband, who is quite happy being Catholic but is studying the LDS faith and reading the Book of Mormon for me, being a supportive husband. I do not - nor does anyone - deserve to be treated with such disrespect for asking a question. -

Again I have not looked at any anti mormon stuff. 1 Nephi is the FIRST BOOK in the Book Of Mormon, my husband and I were reading it together, him from his version (Kirkland 1837 he got from Community of Christ) and me from my LDS version, we were reading scripture together, that is how we found the differences, not from some website, from Scripture (for the first time too, I was very excited that he was reading the Book of Mormon for me to make me happy). I'm sorry I have not found any differences past 1 Nephi, that's all we have read together with both editions so far! - but when we read the rest of it I will be sure to let you know if I find any I asked a fair question, I did not expect to be attacked like this, this is not christian love, this is a witch hunt -

Again, insulting and I don't know why you would think that, this is a legitimate question - it's mine and my husbands question from reading scripture -

I am going to LDS church most Sundays (the missionaries teach me there) and I am reading the Book of Mormon, Gospel Principles, D&C and The Pearl of Great Price. I also am on lds.org a lot and have also checked out fairmormon on some questions too. My husband and I have been reading the Book of Mormon together - him from his kick land edition and me from my LDS given edition - that is why we discovered the differences - because they are there -

I find this comment very insulting, I have not looked at ANYTHING anti mormon, I am very cautious to only look at LDS writing in my search for truth. This is mine and my husbands findings and I have to say I didn't expect such hostility from a group of christians! This is a very legitimate question -

I think it makes a very big difference, to call Jesus God and then to call him The Son of God is different, it is not the same, and it does not mean the same thing. -

Current Version 1 Nephi 11:18 And he said unto me: Behold, the virgin whom thou seest is the mother of the Son of God, after the manner of the flesh. Original And he said unto me, Behold, the virgin whom thou seest, is the mother of God, after the manner of the flesh. Current Version 1 Nephi 11:21 And the angel said unto me: Behold the Lamb of God, yea, even the Son of the Eternal Father Original And the angel said unto me, behold the Lamb of God, yea, even the Eternal Father! Current Version 1 Nephi 11:32 And I looked and beheld the Lamb of God, that he was taken by the people; yea, the Son of the everlasting God was judged of the world; Original And I looked and beheld the Lamb of God, that he was taken by the people; yea, the Everlasting God, was judged of the world; These are just a couple of what we have discovered so far, with the changes in the new version in purple, why change the word of God? It makes no sense. We will keep comparing as we read and I'll list more as we find them. There is a big difference in calling Jesus the Son of God and calling him God, God told Joseph Smith to call Jesus God, who are we to dispute that? Either the Book of Mormon is the word of God or it is not, and if it is then changing that word is blasphemy.
