  1. Would that mean they did not literally disobey God by eating from a literal forbidden tree?
  2. I was looking at 2 Nephi 2:3-4 and sensed that Lehi was trying to teach that someone special would come through the line of Manasseh. That would make sense to me since I see no one in Ephraim's line writing in the Book of Mormon.
  3. That depends. If the Garden of Eden is not a literal place, then it would seem the Fall was not a literal event and thus the plan of salvation is not literal either. I never heard of the concept of the Garden of Eden being symbolic of our pre-existence.
  4. And the Garden of Eden was not literally a garden place?
  5. Are you saying Adam and Eve did not literally eat from a forbidden tree?
  6. Where do you see a reconciliation between the northern and southern kingdoms in Doctrine and Covenants 113:1–6? Who is the rod of Isaiah 11:1?
  7. Based on Lesson 25, I thought the church was trying to establish that Joseph Smith was a descendant of Lehi, who is said to be a descendant of Manasseh. This would kind of make sense considering that no one from Ephraim's lineage, from I can see, wrote anything in the Book of Mormon. This is what also seems to be inferred in verse 3 - "And now, Joseph, my last-born, whom I have brought out of the wilderness of mine afflictions, may the Lord bless thee forever, for thy seed shall not utterly be destroyed". This led me to believe that Joseph's seed (of Lehi, via Manasseh) would not be destroyed since another Joseph would come in that line.
  8. Where did you get the idea Adam and Eve were told they would get kicked out of the garden if they eat the forbidden fruit?
  9. I had a question on this part: If your family needs help understanding this chapter (which corresponds to Isaiah 11), you might find insights in Doctrine and Covenants 113:1–6, in which the Prophet Joseph Smith answers some questions about Isaiah 11. The verses ask 3 questions about identities of people: Who is the stem of Jesse? What is the rod? What is the root of Jesse (Isaiah 11:10)? The rod is described as partly a descendant of Jesse and partly of Ephraim. I know that this excludes Jesus (of Judah). Some in the ward I talked to say the rod is Joseph Smith (and they point me to the January 1991 Ensign; which refers to him as a full Ephraimite). But I see that Joseph is partly of Manasseh (2 Nephi 3). Can he be a full Ephraimite when he is in the lineage of a son of Lehi? Isaiah 11:12-13 says "He will raise a signal for the nations and will assemble the banished of Israel, and gather the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth. The jealousy of Ephraim shall depart, and those who harass Judah shall be cut off; Ephraim shall not be jealous of Judah, and Judah shall not harass Ephraim". Why would Ephraim be jealous of Judah in this future time? Peter
  10. Do you mean that God viewed their disobedience as an evil action?
  11. My family and I started reading the section for the week of February 3-9 in "Come, Follow Me - For Individuals and Families". https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/come-follow-me-for-individuals-and-families-book-of-mormon-2020/intro?lang=eng I had a question on these passages. 46-47 - Lehi identified essential conditions that make agency possible and enable us to reach our divine potential, including the following: 1. A knowledge of good and evil (2 Nephi 2:5) 2. A law given to mankind (2 Nephi 2:5) 3. Opposing, enticing choices (2 Nephi 2:11) 4. Power to act (2 Nephi 2:16) As you read 2 Nephi 2, what do you learn about each of these conditions of agency and their relationship to each other? What would happen to our agency if one or more of these conditions were missing? Since essential #1 was missing from Adam and Eve before they ate from the forbidden tree, what happened to their agency? Did they even have it to begin with?
  12. I was confused when I read this lesson. It was mentioned that Lehi saw a fountain of filthy water (1 Nephi 12:16) and a river of filthy water (1 Nephi 15:26-26). Then Mormon 6:4 says the hill Cumorah was in a land of many waters, rivers, and fountains. What is the difference in the fountain and the river Lehi saw?
  13. What do you mean by Father going before us to show us the way?
  14. I needed some help on this section. It was in a related link on your reference. https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2006/10/the-plan-of-salvation?lang=eng "What occurred in this first estate is dimly understood, but we do know that we lived there as spirits, children of our Heavenly Father, and we made certain steps of advancement to prepare for the opportunity of housing our eternal spirits in earthly bodies." What steps? Another part said "God created Adam and Eve in His own image, with bodies of flesh and bones, and placed them in the Garden of Eden." Is that a misprint? I read that she was was created with that kind of body in the garden. Peter (it doesn't appear I let the forum know my christianese name earlier)
  15. My family and I were in the Shino religion. Last year, we had several missionaries from this church and Jehovah's Witnesses talk about their faith and we were shown from the Bible and Book of Mormon that Jesus was not Michael the Archangel. We attended a few Sunday meetings and felt it was a good place to learn more about the Christian faith. Then we were asked to be baptized. Now we try to follow a routine like the Come Follow Me outlines on a weekly/monthly basis.
