  1. She did ask. That's one of the questions I asked the missionaries. Problem is, she didn't have someone giving her the right answers.
  2. The creepy music made me laugh. But, I've seen the movie without editing, just the straight clips, and it still bothers me. Watching her show on TV, that does, too. Anyway, I'm glad someone commented on the movie maker. It's sensational... Skewed.
  3. YouTube - The Church of Oprah exposed She denies Christ The relevant part ends at 3:30. What do you think about this? What do you think about the video-maker's commentary? What about Oprah's comments? There's many of other videos, too. Some which I wouldn't recommend watching (because of the stupid comments and images added to them), but some you can find that are just pure clips of her television segments. To me, I see a plethora of half-truths. Thinks half-right, but the other half is greatly erring and misleading. I've never liked Oprah, myself. Even as a kid. I get these "feelings" about people that, in my experience, have turned out to be correct. I've been mocked about this, but I know it's one of my gifts. Oprah has always made me feel uneasy. This helps me understand why. Other things she's done have shocked me. Over a decade ago, she had a kid on her show that did the same thing as in this video: YouTube - How many weapons can a student hide? I found it appalling that she showed on national TV how easy it is to conceal weapons. I was 9 at the time, and I've never forgotten that I can stick a rifle in my baggy pants. I think the Oprah segment mentioned the kid cutting holes in the bottom of his pockets to hide bigger guns. Thoughts on Oprah?
  4. D&C 77 1 Q. What is the sea of glass spoken of by John, 4th chapter, and 6th verse of the Revelation? A. It is the earth, in its sanctified, immortal, and eternal state. D&C 88 25 And again, verily I say unto you, the earth abideth the law of a celestial kingdom, for it filleth the measure of its creation, and transgresseth not the law—
  5. What book is this, Hemi?
  6. This, tomk, explains what I've been trying (poorly!) to say! The body is in control, and can have control! But that's not the intended way (I think my first comment said that the GOAL is to have the spirit in control.) I don't think we can master, perfectly, our spiritual control until the Resurrection, though. I like the car analogy, Tough, but I tend to think of it as a wild horse, instead! We can tame the horse, and teach it to response quickly and easily, but without training and care the horse will revert to its wildness. (Okay, I don't know anything about horses, but there's always that "untameable" horse in stories that just HAPPENS to obey the lead character.) And, to be a little odd, once we're Resurrected, we're no longer a rider on a horse, but a rider AND the horse. (Yes... A Centaur. LOL!) Okay, bedtime!
  7. I would think the Celestial Law encompasses all of the others. Just as the Melchizedek Priesthood encompasses the Aaronic Priesthood. Right?
  8. I realized last night what the difference in thoughts on this might be. I believe the brain, and thus our thoughts, are all part of the physical body. I don't know how the spirit "thinks," though I'm sure it's much in the same manner. I know our physical intelligence is different than our spiritual intelligence (which is our spirit.) THIRD even said some of our bodies are more intelligent than others'. I think the spirit and the body exchange experiences (that's how the spirit grows, that's how we gain knowledge from the Holy Ghost.) I will admit that how I talked about the body being in control earlier seems rather one way. I don't think it has FULL control over everything. As mentioned, our souls are dual-bodies, both body and spirit. They work together, but in our state imperfectly. I don't think it's right to say that the spirit is in control unless it gives in to temptation. Sometimes my spirit is standing firm but my brain, which I know to be "faulty" does otherwise. I'm reading my posts, and I'm reading your posts, and I see that we somehow disagree, yet I'm just not fully grasping where that disagreement comes from. I'll be going over a post and thinking "Yes, exactly." And then there'll be one or two comments that don't sit right with me. I have a feeling that it comes from the way we're using "power" and "control." I think I'm explaining in terms that seem more absolute than I intend them to. And I don't mean to say that the spirit doesn't have any control, either, or that it can't gain more and more.
  9. Nope, sorry, I can't believe that. If I had premarital sex, it's not my spirit controlling me then, it's my body. And such a sin impedes the progression of my soul. My spirit does not make me have premarital sex, it is not in control. My body is. The sins of the body affect the progression of our souls, plain and simple. The obedience of our bodies affects the progression of our souls, plain and simple. The body and the spirit make up the soul. In this life, the body can overcome the spirit. This is how the body affects the progression of our spirit, and our soul. If I take you first statement, tomk, I can change it and it still makes sense. "Like the lies of Satan, the spirit itself can only cry for attention - we don't have to listen to it. We choose to." The body is not just a curse that brings BAD things to our minds. It is a blessing! We NEED a body to be like Heavenly Father. It can do much GOOD for our progression as it can BAD. The famous scripture, and some notes on it: Until the body is perfected, and no longer suffers from temptation, it affects our progression. The body must yield. The body is in control. Elder Packer referred to the body as glove, and the spirit a hand. Going off this, the hand gives life to the glove, but the glove... It can range from an immovable gauntlet, to a stiff leather, to a cloth, to a skin-tight latex. Our body, and the choices we make with it, decide just how much the spirit can affect us. I guess that's all I have to say, I really don't want to get into this. Just had a dull day, :/. I don't feel like arguing or even friendly debate, it's too stressful. If people disagree, I guess we're just learning different Gospels here. I know how my body affects my eternal progression, and that helps me. I know that it is because of Christ and His Atoning Sacrifice that in the end, my body will no longer be fallen and affect the progression of my spirit. It is not my spirit that I must listen to, but Heavenly Father's, and it is by HIM and His Son that I can control this corrupted flesh, not of my own self. This, I know. I guess I've shared most of my thoughts on that subject! I'll read replies, of course, but I think I've said what I needed, for myself. This actually helped me examine my understanding, it was great!
  10. The spirit is to overcome the body, yes. That's the GOAL. But it just DOESN'T on it's own. We have to make a CHOICE, and allow our body to become subservient to the spirit. In our natural state, it does not. So, again, our body affects our spirit. The spirit only overcomes the natural man if we allow it to. What you have said falls perfectly in line with my statement. :)
  11. I don't see how. As I said: Whether or not this body chooses to read his scriptures every day, pray always, give in charity, speak kindly, live by need and not desire, not strike another, respect all, work diligent, tithe, share the Gospel, stay chaste, heed the prophets, etc. etc. etc. all affect the progress of my spirit. And after I have lived my life, it will affect the state in which I am resurrected, and the Kingdom of Glory I will be allowed to dwell in.
  12. In mortality the body has power over the spirit. The choices we make, the actions we take, affect the progress of our spirit. It can speed it up, keep it going, slow it down, or halt it altogether. With a resurrected, and/or exalted body, the spirit has power over the physical body. Perhaps this is one of the purposes. That we may have power over the physical realm.
  13. I just moderated this thread, and it's not the first time someone has had to do so. Please, keep comments respectful, review rules 3 & 4, and follow them. If it needs to be moderated again it most likely will be to close the thread.
  14. It's definitely not a "Bishop issue" if it's just making out, even if it's "French kissing." But it is something we're to not do. If you want leadership help, a great person to go to would be your Young Women's leader. Kissing itself is okay, you just have to watch how far it goes, and where. (As they say, necking isn't appropriate) If you've done more, and now have the knowledge that it's not right, that's okay. It's an easy problem to fix. Confess in prayer that you know you haven't been fully obedient, and that you'll do better. Stop the inappropriate behavior. When someone pressures you to do it again, stand firm and let them know you've made a decision not to. Choose the Lord over them, and you will be blessed.
  15. Is being closed on Sundays in these countries an observance of the Sabbath, or did it merely just start that way and grow into a tradition that most people don't give a second thought to? This I'm asking sincerely. What was the feel behind these experiences? Habit, or faith?
  16. A good example: The Stripling Warriors.
  17. Early to bed early to rise. I'm trying to work on that. But take a look at the standard seminary class. Students have to rise early... Now if they went to bed early, they'd be all the more prepared to take in the blessing which is seminary. Anyway, that's one I'm trying to work on. I have a hard time sleeping before noon's darker twin, but I really WANT to.
  18. Actually, the prophet was commanded to stop because it was socially unacceptable and subject to not only legal action, but vigilantism. After the Manifesto, read Woodruff's comments. They offer this insight.
  19. I'm sorry, but although I believe they were wealthy, which is obvious from later chapters, I don't think that's exclusively what Nephi meant. Follow up with the footnotes under "goodly" and "taught" That should illustrate my point. I think it's quite obvious that Nephi was saying his parents were GOOD PEOPLE, and thus he was taught by them.
  20. Consider this issue resolved and over, please. No more discussion on it.
  21. If you follow the footnote to Proverbs 22:1, and then look up the "GOOD name" in Strong's Concordance, you get this: b) reputation, fame, glory I think the many multiple meanings of the word in English most likely ALL apply. Scriptures tend to work like that. As you study it, alone or with each other, new meanings begin to unfold. I'm sure, "having been born of goodly parents" means "having been born of wealthy, reputable, and righteous parents"
  22. When I enter into covenants, I'd like to know exactly what that means I have to do. There ARE other laws. The first two and great commandments are the FIRST and GREATEST, meaning there are more after and below them. We are told to keep His commandments. I think as anyone strives to keep his Law they will study and find more ways to do that. Me, I'm finding other Laws. They point out exact ways I can be obedient to the Lord. They're guiding posts.
  23. The fact that you don't realize he was saying that the Apostle WASN'T that, and that you're so easily offended, is a little beyond me. Motes, beams, right hands, etc.
  24. "Water and clay." ? Tomk, how do you think spirits were created? They were FORMED, we know that, from intelligence and light which always existed. I think it's perfectly reasonable to say that Heavenly Father FORMED (as scriptures teach us) Adam in Eve in a similar fashion. WHAT exactly that fashion is, we don't know, and I don't think we should particularly speculate. But there's physical laws, and spiritual laws. Physical laws can be broken, spiritual laws can not. If Heavenly Father used a spiritual law to create the first, He could have easily broken a physical law. Christ walked on water. Moses parted the seas. Yes, God operates by law. Edit: I also believe that "dust" means that he made them from the same stuff the Earth is made of, not literally dust. It means they weren't angels, or beings of light, but physical, even before the fall. And that "formed them" means He didn't just pop them out of nowhere, Creatio Ex Nihilo style.
  25. I was one of the faithful and valiant (or, courageous, at least) in the pre-existence. Was I "more" faithful or valiant? I do not know. But I know that because of my faith and courage (then, and now) I have many blessings in my life. I was born in America... And though I've never been monetarily wealthy by our standards, what I have is kingly to some on Earth. I have had and will have many more opportunities, and I know, again, that it's because of my faith and courage. I had the chance to join the Lord's Church while in this life. I will have a family and be a leader unto them. This because of my faith and courage. I feel in my soul that I am a warrior of God. I feel that in the pre-mortal life I was more courageous than I am now, but I will be able to grow to be just as brave and valiant as I was, and moreso. As for others? I don't know. I often feel as X does. Those who endure some of the worst conditions in this life were perhaps some of the "stronger" spirits before, with the strength to handle what is put before them. Heavenly knows us all, and loves us all. I don't believe he gives anyone a certain lifestyle or environment as punishment. He knows what we need in this life...
