DisRuptive1 Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 Next week (notably Tuesday to be exact) marks the release of the next Grand Theft Auto video game for the Playstation 2. For those of you that don't know (but you should, since the game is awsome) the basic premise of the game is carjacking. Walking up to a car, beating the driver senseless, throwing him out of his car, and drive away as quickly as possible with your driver side door still hanging out in the wind, only to be shut when you've got a fair enough distance away. With your new car you can then head to wherever in the city and take various missions such as putting out fires, taxiing people to wherever they need to go, assasinating people, taking pictures of corrupt politicians, blow up a mall, steal a prototype tank after killing all the military protecting it, etc. Critics argued that the violence is bad for the children blah, blah, blah but shut up after being told about how in the Coliseum at Rome people would cheer on senseless acts of violence towards animals and humans alike. And the game violence isn't real even though public beheddings, stonings, hangins, various battles during the US civil war, and crucifixions of Christ's time were all a regular occurence of their day. So maybe the virtual violence of games like GTA, Doom, and Quake (other popular violent games) serve some carnal survival need in human beings. And critics argue that the game will cause the people playing it to do criminal acts since you play within a crime wave, most of which you create yourself. But critics usually focus on the one thing that sets GTA from other violent games: prostitution. Only in GTA can you hire the services of a prostitute (depicted by seeing your car rocking), and then kill her and take all your money back when the deed is done. Since it's so easy to do and not get caught in GTA critics argue that people will follow this behavior, although it's been shown that most people will not (and those that will don't need to play a video game before they do it) and the event mortifies most people. It's actually been shown that the media is responsible, but only responsible for making people do what they'd already be inclined to do rather than making people do stuff that they wouldn't be inclined to do. I. E. When did all the US school shootings start rising in frequency? After the media reported on Columbine Seeing that the next Grand Theft Auto is coming out next week, and should be the top selling game of ALL TIME (as the previous GTA held that title and will continue until the new one tops it) what are your thoughts on GTA? Jenda Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 It requires more eye/hand coordination than I have. Quote

Does this make me evil? Quote
Guest bat Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 I've had a copy reserved for months. I'm expecting this to be the greatest game of all time. John, what mission are you having difficulties with? I'm assuming that you're playing Vice City. Quote

Personally, I do believe Grand Theft Auto is near the most demonic game I know. Quote
DisRuptive1 Posted October 24, 2004 Author Report Posted October 24, 2004 You think it's bad because the content is bad. You are like the people that want the statue of David to wear boxer shorts because it's such a good portrayal of the male body. But then you would argue to those people that David is artwork. That's what GTA is, it's art. Sure you might not like it, but I can find 7 million people (at least!!!) across the world who will think differently. GTA is a game that has a quality that not many other games have, fun! Please play the game first for at least an hour before you decide you don't like it. It's a wonderful game, and you can't help but love it. GTA is artwork, and needs to be played before it can be fully appreciated. Quote
DisRuptive1 Posted October 24, 2004 Author Report Posted October 24, 2004 By the way, Franken, if GTA is demonic for you, you should try Manhunt. Quote
Lindy Posted October 24, 2004 Report Posted October 24, 2004 I haven't played the game, but I'll tell you that the boys (grown boys) I know all love it. My sons and both of my son in laws love the game, they think it's the best thing to sit and play. I don't see what all the fuss is about... it's not someting they would do in real life...they know better. But it's something they wish they could do, and this gives them an outlet to do something they couldn't do. There will always be something that is too violent for some people, or too lame for others. There are those who wouldn't dare play GTA....because of simulated violence.....but they would sit down and watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or WWF (or watever it's called now) and think it's all good. But we all know, somewhere deep inside, that we really shouldn't play those games, just like we shouldn't watch movies that are full of sex and violence. I mean, it would be very awkward to take the sacrament, covenenting that you'll "always remember" Christ, right after you were playing a game stealing a car, having sex with a prostitute, and then murdering her. Christ commanded us to be perfect as he's perfect, and there's no way anyone can say anything besides to acknowledge that playing a game such as GTA is hindering your progress towards being like the Savior. DisRuptive1 Posted October 27, 2004 Author Report Posted October 27, 2004 Franken is just like all the misguided, middle eastern women out there (who focus on the sexual content and drugs rather than the core gameplay). I won't go into that however. At work today, we received in 60 copies of GTA, 9 of which were presells. Throughout the evening, I sold 4 presells, and 51 copies of GTA. Just in 9 hours! Two years ago, we received in 80 Vice City's which took a week to sell out. What's important to realize however, is that many of the people I sold it to were children, who's parents I had to talk to in order to sell them the game (that's the policy at TRU). None of the parents (not one!) cared about the "Blood and Gore," the "Intense Violence," or the "Use of drugs." Most of the children of the parents and I were able to allay any misgivings for the "Strong Sexual Content" as that isn't nudity. Just like Vice City it's mostly a strip club where the girls don't touch the guys and don't take their clothes off. Most of the parents had problems with "Strong Language" even though the words that would be spoken are heard by the children EVERY SINGLE DAY at school, going as low as 6th grade for middle schools that teach 6th, 7th, and 8th graders together. Now, I really don't have much time to talk about this, as I bought my copy and want to play it. And if Fraken is right about this game, I just spent $50 to go pick up a prostitute, take her into a dark alley, watch my car bounce up and down, and then shoot her so I have more money to go get another hooker. Ya right! At least all you Mormons can be relied upon to put down what you don't understand or know about (Franken proving my point, obviously). I'm not stupid enough to buy a game just so I can watch a car bounce up and down, while the money in my wallet dwindles. Quote

This is basically like going to a rated R movie that has a few scenes that you don't agree with... but the rest is really good right?? We'll just pretend they don't have that other crap in it right? Ray Posted October 27, 2004 Report Posted October 27, 2004 Have you ever heard the saying that “you are what you eat”? Well, you are what you “think” too. And the more you think about something, the more that will occupy a part of your life. But, hey, I was young too, once. And who knows, maybe the garbage I dumped into my head is doing me some good. Ya think? And btw, just so you know, I would rather have learned most of the lessons I've learned in some way other than the way I learned them, without all the stupid mistakes, because the stupid things I've done still bother me when I remember them.
