Canada polygamists' defense: Gay marriage - Americas- msnbc.com

updated 17 minutes ago

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Canada's decision to legalize gay marriage has paved the way for polygamy to be legal as well, a defense lawyer said Wednesday as the two leaders of rival polygamous communities made their first court appearance.

The case is the first to test Canada's polygamy laws.

Winston Blackmore, 52, and James Oler, 44, are each accused of being married to more than one woman at a time. The charges carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison, British Columbia Attorney General Wally Oppal said.

Should be interesting to see what happens

And proponents of gay marriage continue to deny the logic of polygamy being the next step...

I thought it mildly interesting that the two men under trial are members (or former members) of the FLDS church. Their lawyer is claiming it's a matter of religious persecution as well, because the men's religion condones polygamy.

Perhaps by legalising polygamy the problems associated with child abuse may be overcome, as in the marriages would have to be performed only for those people considered 'of age', adults? Maybe it's time for a british kind of marriage to take place, where a registrar is present in order for the government to be aware that those people getting married are of the correct age requirements?

Canada seems a country that is big on granting rights to all people. Unless the conservatives hold sway, I am guessing they will ultimately be allowed the right to practice polygamy, unless it involves marriage to girls under the legal age of consent.

what about keeping it in the family? im sure there is a law against that. or is that only US polygamists?

Oh, the joys of stereotyping when it is not against your chosen religion.

Plural marriage has Biblical precedence, whereas homosexuality is clearly condemned. So which is further down the proverbial "slippery slope?

Perhaps it is time for a new polygamy group to be formed and seek out a change of state law in Massachusetts. If any opposed, then the finger should be pointed to the same gender special interest group, "..if you allow them to be married under the law, then we should have the same privilege."

I wonder how much opposition will stand up against the group.

Whichever comes second in the given case. The only Biblical precedence for healthy plural marriage is not governmental in its origin and practice, but religious.

I would be interested to hear what proponents of gay rights have to say about this- and about the other cases around the world where polygamy advocates point to gay marriage as paving the way for polygamist marriage. I notice not one of them have touched this thread yet.
