The charges carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison, British Columbia Attorney General Wally Oppal said.Should be interesting to see what happens Quote
hordak Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 You can't control who you fall in love with. Are the gay rights groups going to bat for these guys? Quote
Hemidakota Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 It is time to change the American way of thinking if we begin to cater to special interests. Quote
Maxel Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 And proponents of gay marriage continue to deny the logic of polygamy being the next step... I thought it mildly interesting that the two men under trial are members (or former members) of the FLDS church. Their lawyer is claiming it's a matter of religious persecution as well, because the men's religion condones polygamy. Quote
pushka Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 Perhaps by legalising polygamy the problems associated with child abuse may be overcome, as in the marriages would have to be performed only for those people considered 'of age', adults? Maybe it's time for a british kind of marriage to take place, where a registrar is present in order for the government to be aware that those people getting married are of the correct age requirements? Moksha Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 Canada seems a country that is big on granting rights to all people. Unless the conservatives hold sway, I am guessing they will ultimately be allowed the right to practice polygamy, unless it involves marriage to girls under the legal age of consent. . Quote
L_and_P21 Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 what about keeping it in the family? im sure there is a law against that. or is that only US polygamists? Quote
KristofferUmfrey Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 what about keeping it in the family? im sure there is a law against that. or is that only US polygamists?Oh, the joys of stereotyping when it is not against your chosen religion.Plural marriage has Biblical precedence, whereas homosexuality is clearly condemned. So which is further down the proverbial "slippery slope? Quote
Hemidakota Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 Perhaps it is time for a new polygamy group to be formed and seek out a change of state law in Massachusetts. If any opposed, then the finger should be pointed to the same gender special interest group, "..if you allow them to be married under the law, then we should have the same privilege." I wonder how much opposition will stand up against the group. Quote
Maxel Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 Plural marriage has Biblical precedence, whereas homosexuality is clearly condemned. So which is further down the proverbial "slippery slope? Whichever comes second in the given case. The only Biblical precedence for healthy plural marriage is not governmental in its origin and practice, but religious.I would be interested to hear what proponents of gay rights have to say about this- and about the other cases around the world where polygamy advocates point to gay marriage as paving the way for polygamist marriage. I notice not one of them have touched this thread yet. Quote
